Another great video Wade. We have both the Royale and the Klingon Empire- both great skirts. One thing I'd say is the best skirt is one you can in fact get on and off yourself. We had an incident yesterday where we came upon another group with some beginning kayakers. One of them flipped over, didn't know how to roll, and was unable to pull her rand skirt due to how tight it was. She ended up having to come out through the tube of the skirt. So whichever skirt you get, and it goes without saying, you need to make sure you can get it on and off. Personally, I use the Klingon Empire all the time and like it.
dam that's crazy and I have heard stories like that before did you see what brand it was and what kayak? That's why I would suggested beginners stick with bungee but there are some easy rand options there..
@@WadeHarrison Boat was an older blisstick river runner. Not sure why skirt it was- they only said it was so hard to put on she needed help so my guess was combo of way too small a skirt and maybe just lack of experience and not practicing wet exits.

Hi Wade . Thank for the video . I had to go through this problem myself since I playboat in the ocean surf here in Perth WA and you can impact with really big waves. I had a budget ( bungie cord ) deck that was imploding on me every time so I had to get smart. If you lightly send the rim of the boat cockpit and rub surf wax along it ( and also under the deck , where you have the grippy silicone area ) you'll see an enormous improvement against implosions . I'm talking about a night and day difference 😉 Now I have a good one ( still bungie cord) but I still use the surf wax trick and never had one single implosion so far .

Yeah that makes since that what I was trying to say that starting out the bungee probably be fine but as running more serious whitewater probably want to start looking into something more implosion resistance
In a pool drop rappid I found that paddling a a boat full of water to shore is easier then swimming. Having to empty a kayak full of water after several drops gets cold when your bungee cord spray skirt implodes on you; even though you stayed upright through all of them. Choosing to boat in shorts and a paddle jacket top seemed to be another bad decision of that day, in hind sight. I dropped back to an old Seals 1.7 bungee that fit the boat until I picked up an IR Klingon that's been great year-round.
I have a Level 6 King and Ace in different sizes. Certainly when new and especially when cold they are a bear to get on (on a boat well within their recommended cockpit rim sizes). I had to leave mine on the boat for a week or two to stretch it out. I also have a couple of bungee ones that I use for my sea kayaks. For boats that have screws around the rim area (e.g. seat mounting ones) like Dagger and Wilderness Systems sea kayaks, it can get a bit tight to get a rand skirt in there, but it works you just have to finesse it in a bit.
