I can't wait for the end to comment ... the boat in Hack! is called Orca.
And the professor in Smiley is in Hostel:Part Two, according to Wikipedia.
I'm sure I read a horror novel in the late 1980s/early 1990s with a similar premise ... I thought it was by John Saul but the closest I can find is Brain Child.
Some of these sound quite good ...

Edit: And I had to check out something when you mentioned Steve Railsback there. Life Force had a bigger budget than Disturbing Behavior but at least Disturbing Behavior actually made a little over its budget instead of not even making half of it like Life Force.

R.s.v.p is an awesome movie, I don't think it's a rip off of scream more then it's a story about leoplod and loerd murders and the killer trying to pull off the perfect murder and get away with it unlike the did. Yes the fact it has the guy who plays Jay from Jay and silent bob and Glenn Quinn who did play doyle on season 1 of the wb angel which I thought made it super cool. I was really sad when Glenn guinn died bc he was awesome on both Roseanna and angel as well as this movie. I honestly liked this movie alot but I'm glad it gets some recognition bc I have never seen anyone in you tube talk about it before even if it's on a rip off list of another movie it's still awesome you talked about it.

There was lots of Scream inspired or knock offs from 1997 to 2003.
I know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
    Urban Legend (1998)
    Valentine (2001)
    Cherry Falls (2000)
Do You Wanna Know A Secret? (2001)
I’ve Been Waiting For You (1998)
    Wishcraft (2002)
    Ripper (2001)
    The Clown At Midnight (1998)
    Lovers Lane (1999)
    Final Stab (2001)
    Cut (2000)
    Slash (2002)
Not Slashers but was still heavily inspired by Scream
    Final Destination (2000)
    Disturbing Behaviour (1998)
    The Faculty (1998)
    Soul Survivors (2001)
And other franchises being revived because of Scream and also influenced by Scream,
    Halloween H20 (1998)

@@System_Sega well 1. It was heavily marketed with the cast on the poster and dvd artwork, which is very Scream.
      2. Just the feel of the movie with all a cast of actors from that era, Sean William Scott etc.
The story obviously wasn’t inspired by Scream it was just the marketing.
Every Teen Horror movie from 1997 to 2003 had to be marketed like Scream.
*A focus on the hip and in trend young cast
*Making sure you’ve got a cast member (s) from Buffy, Angel, Friends, Charmed, Sabrina, Dawson’s Creek, American Pie, or Party Of Five
      *Characters using movie references
      *Teen angst drama
*A Nu-Metal or Post Grunge soundtrack and a music video vibe to the movie.
*A Blue colour palate to the movie
*focusing on underage sex is a sin and sex = death (though that’s a very traditional horror trope)
*Subliminal Rape references when it comes to slasher movies, like the phallic looking knife goes through the females womb/stomach (though again that’s also a very traditional horror trope)

Smiley is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, it’s everything I hate about the whole Emo, My Space, Facebook, Dubstep, Twilight era that was in 2012.
The only way Smiley could’ve been any more 2012 is referencing Slender Man, Skrillex, Rebecca Black, Justin Bieber, Twilight, and Kony 2012 (whatever the fuck that was).
My god it was such an awful time.
Smiley had 2012 written all over it, the only movie that aged worse with its references was the live action Alvin And The Chipmunks movie from 2007, so many cringy 2007 references.
That’s the thing with using PoP culture references is it’s going to age, however Scream did it so well that it comes across charming and if makes you feel nostalgic about the late 90’s.
Smiley and the live action Alvin And The Chipmunks movie makes you feel cringy for the awful references.
Tbh I don’t think you can do references in this Post Modern, Social Media world we live in today because it’s going to age within a few days.
Where you could get away with using some PoP culture references Pre Internet because while it was going to age, it wasn’t going to age anywhere near as fast as things age today.
That’s why you could get away with shouting WHAT’s UPPP?, in 2002 and it still not fully outdated yet even 2 years after its fame.
