Four tricks to solve :
STEP 1- convert into sin and cos
STEP 2- fractions
STEP 3- identities
STEP 4- rationalization
Mam was following first step
And you are also correct we can convert by the method you are telling but at the end we have to convert cot^2 theta into cos/sin

Because there is no need to change that. We have done that so that it becomes the same denomination so that we can cancel it out but if you will do the same with the denominator then again both will vary.
