Story behind this song (this is 100% true and testiment to the fact they do not take themselves at all seriously)
Mark and Misha came up with guitar parts for the song, Mark pointed out that the sound of it made him think of a fat vampire lumbering around attacking medieval peasants, the working title for the song was then "Fat Dracula" (you can see this on whiteboards tracking album progress in some of thier vlogs), Spencer then wrote a spooky vampire themed song to go with the instrumentals, and Fat Dracula got translated into Romanian, hey presto, Dracul Gras 😂
If you want some more serious thematic lyrics from the band, Alpha/Omega is a full concept double album, all about a man born into an evil cult, with themes of heaven and hell, rebirth, the occult etc.
They also have a song called Blood Eagle all about a Viking raiding party 😅

I highly recommend their song Omega. It's around the same length as this song, but it will fill the void Dracul might have left for you. It's probably my favourite song of all time.
There's also the song Stranger Things from the same album, which might be even better. It's a bit shorter, too, and is possibly way more emotionally charged.

@@markabusireactions Satellites may literally be their most heartfelt and meaningful song, so yeah you should. I get the feeling from this reaction that you really just don't appreciate "storytime" lyrics at all which I completely don't understand, but whatever. IMO Music is a story in audio form, whether it be historical, personal, or fictional entertainment, so songs like these are amazing to me, with the lyrics being a big draw as part of the atmosphere and story.
"That's not what they do" "there's no emotional hook" Yes, It is what they do, because they do a ton of stuff. Yeah, there's no emotional hook, it doesn't mean anything, because it's entertainment in this and many other songs cases. Expecting all their songs to be perfect masterpieces of human thought is like expecting all books people read in their free time to be top-shelf philosophy and introspective works.
I understand that you have a different opinion, but in my opinion, you are too elitist and narrowminded in your judgement of what is "good". These lyrics are excellent at conveying what the song was meant to convey, and that is an entertaining and atmospheric story about a fat vampire, and you are somehow managing to both miss the forest for for the trees and miss the tree for the forest. You're focusing way too closely on one narrow aspect you're looking for and missing the forest, and you're looking for a big picture while ignoring that it's just a tree.

Not sure if anyone has said this yet, but the intro being out of time is actually a mistake. Misha cut the riff at the wrong point when he was recording it in his daw. Not realizing he snipped a beat off, he sent it to the drummer Matt, and he just went with it. Misha didn’t realize it was wrong until the drums were already recorded

One thing you'll learn about Periphery as you explore them further, is that while they do have some of the most profound music you'll ever hear, they also don't take themselves too seriously. The last 3 seconds of the album previous to this one is one of the guitar players saying "suck my balls".

This song definitely grew on me after a few listens for sure and I really enjoy it now. It's essentially just a song about fat Dracula. It's from their album, Periphery V, which came out earlier this year but it's not the first time they've done a song like this. When they released Periphery IV back in 2019 there was a song on there called Reptile and it was about a stoner who tried to save the planet from reptilian aliens. It goes for almost 17 minutes but it's one of the best songs they've ever released imo, though I can't be sure whether you'd like it or not haha. I'd recommend stuff like The Way The News Goes..., Flatline, It's Only Smiles, Luck as a Constant and maybe Stranger Things.

Most of Periphery's previous albums have a consistent sound/concept/style to them over the course of each album individually. This is from their most recent album which really breaks that mould , so you get tracks like Wax Wings which are full of nostalgia and emotion, Silhouette which is very electronic like the guitarist (Jake) side project, Dracul Gras which is a comedic, thematic story and then of course the orchestral influence throughout the album which reflects Misha's side projects as a composer. I can understand you being thrown off given your lack of context about the band and you listening to the songs in a very random order rather than following the album from start to finish.

It might help you to realize that most of their riffs are actually in 4/4 more often than not. The phrases and accents might move around over or before the bar line… but they wrap around a 4/4 pulse. Follow the hi hats or crash cymbal. The outro riff (before the electronic part) where you were trying to count the time signature was literally in 4/4.
I’d highly recommend the song Atropos.
Lots of amazing singing with some screaming as well. But it does a similar thing where if you were to count, might sound like 4 bars of 7 and 1 bar of 4. But it actuality just wraps perfectly around a 4/4 pulse. Just lock into that pulse and let the rhythms circle around you.
    Looking forward to future reactions!

Your previous experiences tricked you a bit I guess. They are a prog metal band that likes to expore musically, this includes concepts and themes. Sometimes they can take the lyrics seriously, sometimes they just want to write a vampire song!
They have a few tracks like this where it is storytelling and even a record that is pure concept storytelling, ofcourse some of there music is written in a way that its up for personal interpretation as well.
The reason I love Periphery is because of there diversity and exploration musically while still having there own reconisable sound when so many other bands are actually quite stale in this genre.
