I went through a decade long "tomboy" phase because I thought that was the only way to be a person. I hated pink, hated girly clothes and makeup tutorials, I hated what being a woman felt like. it took until I burned out at 20 I finally started to reflect on not only my mental state, but also my identity. I don't hate girly things- I like skirts, dresses, gossip and crochet, I love late night discussions and baking. I hate that whatever I do, if I wear a dress, society calls me shallow and artificial.
It took until I burned out at 20 years old to realize my favorite color wasn't black or blue. It was orange. It was dresses and shorts and scraped knees, late summer nights, knitted cardigans and well-worn hiking boots with little homemade charms. It was horseback riding and campfire music, it was decorative bookmarks, jumping in leaf piles, climbing trees, crying after finishing a sad indie game and singing badly in the car, embroidering a tiny pig on a pair of jeans, listening to Taylor swift and midwest emo. It was wild and undefined and unremarkable. It was me.
There are so many more shades of femininity than the world wants us to believe. So sing and dance and love who you want to, cut your hair with kitchen scissors, wear high heels with frilly dresses and limp home barefoot at the end of the night. Modern life stole our right to self expression so steal it the fuck back.

Is interesting to remember your "not like the other girls" phase when you aren't a woman anymore. I remember mentioning the old one "I don't do that much makeup" or that I didn't like pink. Internalized misoginy makes everyone hide aspects of their real self. It's sad to recognize that you kind of "lost time" because of it but it's also important since it helps us improve and let this view behind.

I’m kind of fascinated by the “not like other girls” examples that fall within being “more feminine” than other girls, like being married young or hiking in heels. My experience was always with not-like-other-girls making the assumption that their distinction was not following some traditionally feminine trait, but I guess when you have people who say feminism has lead to a society full of single, masculine women, that is also a media depiction you can be distinguishing yourself against.

I think there's an aspect that's not talked about enough. Of course it's different when we are talking about grown adults, but for the very young, particularly teenagers, the "not like other girls" can be a sort of defense mechanism. Not a good, or healthy one, but one regardless. I used to be relentlessly bullied by other girls for being boyish, for being weird, for "being a d*ke". My self esteem became extremely low, and I started associating conventionally feminine straight girls with that type of behavior: they were mean, they were shallow, and I didn't want to be like them. So I became a "not like other girls" teen, because it was the only thing that gave me a feeling of self worth; if I was doomed to be always the odd one out, then my best option was to be proud of it.

my track with the 'not like other girls' thing was the exact opposite lmao. i was a huge tomboy when I was in like elementary school (playing with the bugs, wearing my older (male) cousin's clothes, did not register gender was really a thing) and slowly got peer pressured into being more feminine as I went into middle school, where I had my 'not like the other girls bc I was fucking crazy' phase. found out in highschool I wasn't a girl so. yeah. enby rights??

My experience is the opposite too. Turns out I'm a trans man so now everything makes sense.

Thank the everlasting void I learned how to make my own clothes and able to buy my own clothes). She genuinely stunted my ability to make friends with girls my age because of her weird obsession with her vs other girls even in her 50s. For me, I've always had a complicated relationship with femininity (and still do to some degree as an AFAB enby who only realised my queerness a few years ago). I would say that having been raised by a somewhat feminist (early feminist, probably) mum, who was once a professional, there was an open-mindedness in that I could play with a lot of different toys (Hot Wheels, RCs, train sets, Barbies, Polly Pockets, dolls, water guns etc) but she still has a lot of internalised misogyny. I think there's a lot of interconnectedness between the "tradwife" pick-me-girls and Christianity, as someone who is an ex-Christian. So, my mum would often judge other people wearing "skimpy" clothes, talk about tattoos and be very disapproving of people wearing makeup including my own older sister. But then on the other hand, she looks down on people who wear hijabs and niqabs as a part of their religion for covering up too much. Of course, with head coverings, there's often an extreme social pressure to do so depending on what communities you're in and where you are in the world, so it's not always a personal choice. Anyway, my point is that I think it's wrapped up purity culture and this "godly/holy/perfect" body idea (body is a temple thing) at the same time as _trying_ to empower women within the system that exists. Like it's a more centrist (and rape-culturey) approach/perspective rather than a more truly revolutionary feminism.
Sorry, that turned into a rant. As I was saying, because my mum would make comments about my sister, as a child, I often really tried to be a "proper" girl. I was quiet apart from tantrums 😬, almost never wore heels, never did makeup. At the same time, I was also a neurodivergent kid who hadn't come into "her" own - that only happened in my 20s - and didn't really have friends. But my most "pick-me" was probably in secondary school, when people were starting to explore their sexuality and also when we did football in PE. I was in no way a sporty kid, but football was something that I enjoyed doing with my family (dad and older brother mostly as well as my sister, but less). When we did it at school though, I would get so annoyed with the other non-sporty girls because they'd just stand around chatting and actively avoiding the ball whilst I was getting kicked in the shins by the guys trying to tackle them. In terms of sexuality, it was something that baffled me for a long time, but around late secondary, I developed a superiority complex about not being at all interested in guys/dating at all. Finally, games are such a diverse thing! I know they're just talking about VIDEO games, but Scrabble is a game, checkers is a game, Bejewelled is a game, Plants & Zombies is a game, Tiny Tower is a game, Doodle Jump is a game, MarioKart is a game, Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing is a game, WiiSports is a game, Super Mario Brothers is a game, Snakes & Ladders is a game, FIFA is a game, football is a game, cricket is a game, Playground is a game, Kinect Adventures is a game, that weird Bolt movie game, Tetris is a game, WiiPlay is a collection of minigames, Pokemon is a game, KinectSports is a collection of games, heck there's even video games of board games! Sure, the stereotypically bro-ey games ARE games, but do you know how hard things like Just Dance or Dance Central can be?! Plus, people have different starting points. For me, I was raised with and still really like clean safe, non-violent fun. So I'm not really interested in playing Call of Duty or Halo. I'd much rather play Bejewelled or Club Penguin (if it was still a thing, RIP).

Have you had Korean coffee? I like these instant packets that come with sugar and creamer already in them, they are easy to take on trips and they are milder than most coffees. I don't like very strong or bitter coffee so I prefer these when I want to drink coffee, I do prefer teas but sometimes coffee sounds good. It is called maxim and I get the gold ones.
Also the pregnant lady with makeup, maybe she went into labor unexpectedly and was out grocery shopping when her water broke lol
Also the not real gamer stuff. The sims 1 and 2 were absolutely, painfully hard and close to imposing without cheats, so yeah it takes skill. Also the amount of budgeting that Stardew and animal crossing take and the commitment is real, it is like a real job. (There is a new game that is like Stardew valley but with mermaids called Coral Island. It is early access and so freaking adorable.)

But now, I feel great and I used to be like "Ew pink" but if I'm really thinking, pink is such a pretty colour, and as an artist it's probably one of my favourites, depending on the type of pink. My eyes are quite sensitive, so I still don't like hot pink, but baby pink is such a nice colour. Also, I APPLAUD people who know how to wear makeup, if another mascara brush comes anywhere near my eye, I might actually cry, I twitch SO much I physically couldn't do that lol. But I'd put on blush, bronzer, mayyyyyyybe eyeshadow, but other than that my eyes would be so watery

I have the weird (weird in a good way) in-between of having grown up as a "tomboy" (surprise I am gender queer lol), while also LOVING shiny pretty things a lot of other women wear but also loving grungy things like broken glass bits and nut shells. (All of which I make jewelry from)
The result is that I am a barefoot gremlin outside with pretty rings and earrings, while simultaneously starting to make my own clothes (via upcycling my old ones) and not being able to stand anything greasy or sticky on my hands inside.
Sensory things are weird. I am both entirely ready to get down and get dirty, while also NEEDING to clean myself. Depends on texture. Blood and mud? NAH, I am not bothered by the feeling--but will wash bc safety. But grease and sticky things? GET THEM GONE, even if it carries no medical risk. NOPE, NEVER. OFF.

I definitely had a 'not like other girls' era and I used to feel bad about it. I loved bright colours and pink and feminine things, but I didn't let myself like and acted like I hated those things. I don't know how long it took me to start feeling comfortable with 'girly' and dresses. It wasn't until I realized why that happened that I let myself forgive little me for experiencing that.

My “not like other girls” phase was terrible. I didn’t outwardly put others down, but I did internally feel some sense of superiority. It’s true - I have always liked more “unconventional” things for the most part, probably because I’m autistic, and the obsession with romance that became prevalent later on didn’t help because I’m aroace. Then, when I became interested in fashion, I felt embarrassed to tell anyone because I thought they’d see me as weak due to having a more feminine interest, although my style is traditionally masculine. Nowadays, I don’t care - whether we’re “tomboy”, “girly girl”, in-between - any interests we have, us women are so amazing and I’m proud to be one!

also, i too had a "not like other girls" phase in middle school, swerving very very hard into being emo. turns out i WASN'T like other girls!
i was, in fact, a boy lmao. thankfully transitioning cured me of that, and im now more feminine than i was back when i was a girl.
anyway people need to stop demonizing femininity so much, honestly. especially if they're doing it by making fun of those who dress feminine by choice. my best friend is like someone distilled "essence of barbie" and injected it into an art student, she loves pink and dresses and princesses and such. and some people give her so much shit for it, just because she's enjoying herself as irl princess peach. it's ridiculous, honestly.
teal deer less "not like other girls" mentality more goth/barbie solidarity ✨

As an AFAB genderfluid person, who generally presents as female, I never liked "girly" things. But it's totally okay! I hate the redirect and internalized misogynistic idea that "girly" and feminine women/girls are personality-less, or are just bimbos, or are dumb. It grinds my gears, even though I am what you could consider the "not like other girls," girl, I still enjoy traditionally feminine things at times! For example, I LOVE jewelry, that's typically viewed as a feminine trait. I think gender roles in general need to be broken down in our society.
Basically what I am saying is:
Being a feminine girl/woman - totally okay! More power to you, you still have a personality, you aren't weak, and you have a total right to express yourself this way!
Being a masculine woman, or the "not like other girls" - more power to you!! Express yourself in any way that makes you feel comfortable!
Same goes for our non-bianary pals and our men
