  • Anyone who dances salsa knows about or has done a copa at some point. In this video I discuss why I think it's one of the most important building blocks in any salsa dancers learning as well as provide some variations for those of you that are familiar with this step.
    Topics within:
    🔥Copa to fake (with styling)
    🔥Copa to Left
    🔥Copa to progressive
    🔥Copa to back lead progressive
Once again thanks to Sharonne Vinokurov as always for helping me out.
    Song:
Historia De Un Amor-Vinny Y Ray

Great vid. The bounce feel is rarely taught. Once both lead and follow understand this concept, it's an auto magic level up. In reality the coca cola is almost the same footwork and concept for the follow especially if lead from the basic step..

Thanks for this, I learnt it in class tonight and have been trying to drill it in the social. Wanted to find a video to learn the technical aspect for my lead so I know what to do and how to differentiate it from the one where the follower turns in (like a wrap) although that looks class combined with the turns you both follow it up with- so would love to learn that. Thanks so much from North East England, UK!

What are you impressions about the difference between copas in salsa on1 and on 2. Since (theoretically) the pause is located in different parts of the basic step the feel is quite different, and the elastic effect is (theoretically) different. What about stepping on 8 rather than on the 1?

Once you start to dancing on1 and on2 yourself, interchanging between both timings, the differences obliterate more and more. Depending on the movement you tend to step on the & between 4..1 when dancing on2, and elongate the slow weight change on 3 when dancing on1. In theory there are differences, in the feeling according to the music to, but the body movement is pretty much the same.

Great question. I think what you are talking about is more a matter of nuance. I don't feel like the difference between on1 or on2 matters much. I mean yes there is a bit of change in cadence. But technique transcends count in my opinion. So being able to lead or follow this movement in one way, covers all the others. I count the steps on1 and on2 for that exact reason. As long as a dancer understands the rhythm of on1 or on2, everything else will eventually fall into place.

    Thanks, Teach!
At 1:49, you have your hand on Sharonne's shoulder but earlier in the video, you keep her right hand in your right hand. Which technique is "easier" or "less-fck-up-able" for a less-experienced lead to attempt to ensure the follow can understand your intentions?

I always say it's easier to lead the torso. So I recommend placing your hand to the torso instead of keeping the hand. Although I'm still leading from the torso even with the hand hold. But that's a little extra. Simplest version is just leading from the shoulder. The torso.
