    Had the honor of running one of these when I was Young,, ,,later on i out dug a 992 cat. pulled a d10 out of the mud sideways, this was the most powerful loader i ever had the honor to drive , and maybe still the beast that never could be out dug in its class,,, i had a chevron blade and could lift my ass end up pulling out of the bank, and pull well over the 12 yards rated. wish they made them like this.. i will never forget my loader it was a proud day in my life of strip mining ,,

    Thanks for giving the year of the this loader. Often wonder the vintage of the equipment in your videos. The data plates must get thrashed over the years. Keep the videos coming! Seen all of them and enjoy every one. I thought I was the only one who appreciates old equipment.

    Watched a lot with the old bushrat mechanics I work with.They usually get a little nostalgic about the old days of coastal logging when they see the Madills and Cypress equipment.

    The L480 did not come around until 1985.Michigan was still making the 475B in 1980

    the motor is a Cummins V1710 which is basically two 855 cummins put together in v12 form 1710 divided by 2 equals 855.

    I remember a old horror movie with a car in it called Christine and at the end of the movie they kill it with a caterpillar track loader and this Michigan front end loader can always still take out the trash as well and one way out to take out mr lahey car as well

    There is a quarry northwest of Winnipeg that was using the smaller brother of that one for loading trucks.

    One heavy old wheel loader, all in all I think it is pretty hard to beat Cat in the wheel loader market.

    • @derke123
      @derke123 3 года назад

      Every single manufacturer of loaders beat CAT, it's only America that keeps them close to their heart. Volvo, Ljungby, JCB, Liebherr, Komatsu, Hitachi, hell even John Deere all have a hundred times better comfort, accessibility for daily inspections, filter changes are easier, they are more comfortable, better visibility. It still blows my mind how Cat is one of the only manufacturers who just don't take the operator into the equation when making machines and just do what's simplest and cheapest in the factory. Quite the rant to reply to a 7 year old comment but I'm just really tired of driving CAT loaders because the people deciding to purchase the machines are not the same people driving them.

    Cat has always had the best wheel loaders can't explain it they just are.

    Cat got into the wheel loader building, after all the other companies finally ironed out their mistakes. In other words, Cat learned from their faults.

    • @derke123
      @derke123 3 года назад

      That's a bad way of wording it considering they make the worst loaders of any major manufacturer at the moment, even being outclassed by small swedish manufacturers like Ljungby. Spending a couple hundred hours in a CAT loader was painful.

    Put some really good tires on it and check/add your engine liquids and it’ll be a runner again!

    I'm going to assume that operating cost vs productivity plays a large part.

    that 2" steel plate frame can and will break directly above front axle.

    • @dellsims9276
      @dellsims9276 7 лет назад

      Glen Ellis what would happen on the A model was the axle bolt would loosen and break and crack in that area. Daily walk around with our machines was to put your hand on each bolt to feel for tightness. Probably should have torqued them weekly . Live and learn and that was many years ago before we Learned about PM other than oil changes.

    I remember the L-480 as HUUUGE back in the day.
    Looking at it now, its not much larger than a modern L-350 which i don't find THAT big.

    what year did it go out of commision

  • @mholm09
    @mholm09 11 лет назад +1

    Yes, but if the productivity of this large chunk of cast iron drops, why keep maintaining it, or operate it? Put it to pasture, and buy a new machine, effectively saving money.

    But a good operator on an old machine is 1,000 times more productive than a so-so operator on a band new "high tech" machine....
