The comments here are portentous. I noticed a few issues, like the lack of a mask and some messy technique but how could a surfboard get any more expensive? May as well make it outta California Redwood. It's still a beautiful thing despite the fact that the carpenter is only a few years in.
gorilla glue is the brown clear stuff that gets foamy. he didn't use water to help activate it tho, as its a hydrating glue... the early stuff was CA glue, and then fiberglass resin was used at the end for the coating. also a crappy job... lame stencils, lame graphics...
I don't know if a surfboard made of wood in such a complex design like this has an advantage, but I do know that since the mid 1960s most surfboards are made of light glass fiber with a poly-foam core. The more expensive ones are even made of carbon fiber.
Depends! Of course the wood ones are heavyer but they feel soo much more ,,alive,, They haven't got that much flex and they are probably also not really for like the heavyer or bigger waves. But the wood longboards, are just beautiful and I would love to have one of the wood ones in my quiver as well!!! And last but not least, they really start to get more and more into using natural materials again, something like algave strong or so, its a realy interesting topic, and i love to explore new stuff on the market.
Great video For some reason I always thought surfboards were made of plastic, I was surprised to see them made of wood. I still don't understand why it's a corked and hollow inside, can anyone tell me?
For voyance, to be able to float. If it has no spce inside, it is more denser than the water that make it sink under the water. Similar to concept of ships or simple example a sealed empty galon that floats into pool. Related to pressure.
Less weight, for manoeuvrability! We all know a log can float in water, but surfing on one is another story. If a wooden or foam surfboard gets waterlogged, it's really hard to handle ... believe me, I've experienced a (damaged) water logged longboard, and it was near impossible to manage, and even worse when it came to duck diving! So less weight the better, that's why most boards are made of a light, dense foam. Wooden boards are more for show. The original boards were made from solid balsa wood, then "shaped" to suit. The builders were called "shapers" for that reason. The board in the video is called a "space-frame" construction, like an airplane wing.
