All the notes in John Williams - Harry Potter's "Hedwig's Theme"

- I saw this excerpt recently on a Dallas Symphony audition list for section violin. First time I've seen it requested for an orchestra audition. I wonder if this will become a standard excerpt.

when you realize the easiest part is the part people hear and the hard part no one hears
edit : woah guys why so many likes
Happens way too often lol
*cries in Violin 2 🥲*
@DoritoMe I played 2nd vln too. It doubles the 1st vlns.
*cough, cough* Rach 3 *cough, cough*
BRO VIOLIN 2 IS INSANE - the oboe and English horn parts are crazy but this thing is beyond me
Violinists: it's just a pops concert, I won't have to practice
John Williams:
Lol 😅 could be accurate, but we know by now, if John Williams is in the programm, it is the most we will practise that month 😅
Or you just accept all those notes are there for a section effect and play it not so clean... just played some prokofiev with the orchestra, and there were fast passages that would both take several weeks for everyone to clean, and would make zero difference in the end result. So f it, aim for clean highs and lows, keep the tempo, play fast, move on.
@@79Clochette Yes, every piece of John Williams is hard to play or has some pretty tricky part. He write great music, but that's one of the hardest contemporary composer to play for every section in the orchestra.
I literally never noticed how insane the violin in the background of this piece is but I think I will hear it profoundly every time from now on
I believe the part is for celeste
@@davidwickline9710it’s also for the violin? Did you not look at the sheet music or?
Also it’s very obviously in the piece that’s it’s violin playing.
Most modrrn violin parts are like this. I've seen much more difficult than this for violin or other instrunents. I am a retired classical musician, woodwind. Beautiful and well done by this gentleman none the less.
it's only insane if you know nothing about violins lol
@@abear2874nah it’s still insane, lots of classical music has stuff that’s even harder but I would still absolutely hate seeing this in an audition
this is literally the best recording of this I could find on youtube, very clean and precise.
It's soo out of tune LOL. It's rhythmically precise though I guess.
Still pretty good considering how hard the part is, plus it's a break from all the other RUclips violinists who play nothing but the melody. Anyway I do wish I could find a better recording but it seems none of the more skilled violinists have made any.
@@FreakieFanso out of tune is a stretch. I’d like to hear you play this in the same bpm
@@bobross8897
This is such a nonsensical argument. I don't need to be able to play violin to be able to hear how out of tune this is. I'm a life long musician myself, and I have ears, thank you.
@@FreakieFan agree with you freakiefan in the fact that @bobross8897 argument is ridiculous, as my teacher always said playing fast is diferent from playing good.
I love John Williams for putting so much effort and detail into every score.
A Genius!
One of the few film composers that can come close to classical in terms of orchestral music
I love John Williams' scores; I hate playing them.
@@dragonquestfan2002this.
Why does Willams hate strings so much? :,)
What effort? The violinist does the work. Williams is more like the guy operating a torture device.
Wouldn’t be surprised if this was inspired by Prokofiev’s first violin sonata.
yup, was thinking that and aspects of the Mendelssohn concerto
@@jlhc basically all his music borrows from great masters, and that's ok.
It's consistent with his MO for sure.
@@ericoschmittwell sometimes it feels like he's straight up copying

Please no don't let this become a standard excerpt. Orchestra auditions are painful enough lol
I'm on my way to music school and this is the most real statement I've ever heard.
@@hookyhook6006 same they had us do Don Juan! for school! Not even for a professional orchestra!
Good luck on your adventures at music school! Dont drink too much jungle juice you didn't make yourself. Don't ask me how i learned that lesson. ( ... damn bass player house parties....) I've been taking orchestra auditions going on 9 years now, only won a few. Start shredding DJ, both scherzo's: Mend. and Schumann. Cheers! @@hookyhook6006

I've seen this as a requirement for one orchestra's excerpts list 😂
I’d love to hear this without the backing track...super cool to hear this! Your playing is so smooth, I literally can’t stop watching.
Without the backing track, you'll hear all my imperfections, 😆
bit of suicide by words there, mate. Don't sell yourself that fucking short.
@@grgryl People who can't play instruments think you're a wizard and fellow musicians will forgive your mistakes :)
Yes. I finally taped it without the accompany part. Mckinney Philharmonic asked for m. 19-58... and Sydney Symphony Orchestra asked for the misterioso section from 115 to 147. Plus I am playing the entire thing for Rockwall Phil later this fall.
Can please you publish a video of this? I would love to hear it!
Ahhhhhh so good! I never appreicate how intense this part is!
Thanks for showing the sheet music with handwritten notes on it! Just a cool detail that most RUclips videos leave out because they display the digital PDF
Every time I've listened to this piece as a violinist I cower in fear at this section.
goosebumps. williams is a treasure. and kudos to the performer because my jaw was on the floor as I visually saw the sheet music of what he was doing in real time.
This is truly amazing!! And for film music to enter audition repertoire..is truly shocking!!! Thank you for taking the time to practice this and share with us!!
its funny because this excerpt is harder than the hardest material found in most of the standard violin concertos
Absolutely flawless! Excellent work
Amazing, the violin is such an amazing instrument. I would love to learn it but I'd probably make it sound like a crying banshee. 😭
Hey, everyone starts somewhere! Do not think professional players weren't once beginners! If that's your passion, go for it!
@@deimantegrigaliunaite2871 Awww thank you, I've never been too consistent with music - heck I played the Piano for 7 years but only played the baby stuff and never did anything complex (Started at 6 or something) I am 15 now and it seems so amazing to be able to create masterpieces!
@@seeninthedark Man, don't give up! I'm 19 and have been playing the violin for only a year and a half, and I just wish that I have started playing sooner. If you put in the hours and commitment, you will move beyond the baby stuff in no time! Especially when you are older, since it will be easier to learn the techniques
Sadly I see that violin is one of those instruments that you start at age three and progress until you are 40 😂. I would love to learn it but I wouldn’t ever get to learn any other instruments 🎸
Sir, you are a wizard
you did a fantastic job, so much precision!
When I saw Gregory Lee in my recommended feed I knew I had to watch it. Represent OKC! Fantastically played as always.
Now I understand better why my youth orchestra never played the HP soundtrack ^^
The most amazing part of this performance is you only looked mildly concerned throughout.
"but whyyyyyyyy do i need to practice my scales"
* john williams enters the chat... *
Brilliantly done!!!
john williams got some beef with the violins man
I wish more people did videos like this for other scores. Great job!
like which other score?
Bravo well done! That's one tough excerpt!
Writing down the finger position for a piece like this is so real
bro likes to not blink, awesome playing!
i've always loved this piece obviously but never noticed how intricate it was ... The goat Mr Williams
That harmonic at the end was so bright and shimmery😮 Wicked performance!🎉
Amazingly impressive. Bravo!
Congratulations, lad! You are an excellent violinist!! Your precision when playing the notes is impeccable!!!
NO is not
@@sergiomarriniviolinist5516 Perché non, Sergio?! Pensi che la performance del ragazzo nel video non sia buona?
His precision when playing the notes was not impeccable.
@@maestrospolzino it's good to very good on a amateur/semi-professional level, but it's not 'good' per se and for sure not impeccable. He misses a lot of notes, it's generally very stressed and very often rhythmically uncoordinated (with the base and for himself).
@@sergiomarriniviolinist5516 I got your point! Yes, if we compare it to classical violinists who play Paganini and Ernst perfectly, I agree that this is not "impeccable". But anyway, playing the Harry Potter accompaniment is not a simple thing either, and the lad in the video played it very well! When we don't play the instrument, we get impressed more easily! Haha
P.S. Sei anche un grande violinista, Sergio! Saluti dal Brasile! 🇧🇷🇮🇹
Absolutely magical
This brings me joy ❤
Ty for uploading this!
I could watch this on loop for hours
Wow, well done!! I had to watch twice!
John Williams be like "eehheee let the violinists bleed"
I had always wondered what that part looked like written out. And played. Such an awesome part
I wish in an alternate universe they've gotten John Williams to compose the score for all 8 movies. The brilliance of this violin part and so much else from his work shouldn't have stopped at the 3rd movie.
If you look into his eyes you can still see the residual tears from all the hours of crying and practicing
The tears came later. The rest of the movie gets harder.
I guess you could say that you have a honorary graduation title once you mastered the soundtracks violin@@grgryl
Played like a true pro!
Can you imagine walking into the studio session and seeing THIS on your stand?!?!
No worries in studio because the guy driving the soundboard through the glass usually can perform miracles
Thanks John for giving us some of the most amazing parts but also some of the most impossible to play parts
wow! great playing👍
Gotta love the chorus effect
Thank you so much. Finally I found what I've always searched for. I've always tried to find the score for the violin part of this piece just to get impressed. I also would like to see "Drive test" from "How to train your Dragon".
Well I hope I haven't broken too many copyright laws by posting the music here.
HA!! I "played" that before in Austin. Didn't grab near as many notes as you!😂 Great job!
great score, great play!
I just got done playing a movie concert with this and I need to know you're fingerings for this now 😂

John Williams sure loves his arpeggios lol. Listen to Anakin vs. Obi Wan from Revenge Of The Sith and you'll hear some nice dissonant ones in there
When I read "all the notes" I was waiting for a joke such as just playing them all in ascending order or something. :D
