  • Stress Concentration occurs when there is discontinuity in geometry.
    Static Stress Concentration:
Stress concentration depends on geometry and loading. For the same geometry, you will have higher stress concetration under normal force, than bending. Also, normal stress concentration factor, K_t is higher than shear stress concentration factor, K_ts.
    Fatigue Stress Concentration:
Fatigue Stress concentration depends on the material as well, some materials have more sensitivity to stress concentration than others, this sensitivity is determined by q and qs.
q can change between zero and one, where zero indicates no sensitivity, and one indicates full sensitivity.
    Determination of Stress Concentration Experimentally:
In experiment, you can find the stress at failure (Strength). We need to run two tests, one on unnotched specimen and one on notched specimen.
The stress concentration is defined as:
K_t= Stress at failure of un-notched specimen / Stress at failure of notched specimen
