  • The Fortress of Suomenlinna in Helsinki is an impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's a massive fortified group of islands in the harbour of Helsinki, constructed in the 17th century as a barrier against Russian attacks from the east. Unfortunately it was unsuccessful as the Russians conquered Finland in the 19th century, but it has lead to some interesting history. Join me for a closer look at one of Finland's most popular spots!

    The Fortress of Suomenlinna in Helsinki is amazing. I went there a few years ago and was so surprised at how much history there is and how well kept the fortress is. That's a nice historical roundup.

      Thanks! It's such a great spot, especially on a warm sunny day - no wonder its even popular with the locals!

    You did a far better job than pronouncing that name than we did last week when we were filming! Mate, you are super informative and this is really well filmed. Keep up the great work!

    I love seeing forts like this and the huge cannons. We recently visited and camped at our first fort in Florida.

      You're welcome, thanks for watching! It's a beautiful spot - probably the most visited attraction in Finland I think, and for good reason too!

    It looks like you had some beautiful weather to explore this part of the world, much warmer than the winter months. I forget how close Finland is to Russia and how it's been a strategic location for the west throughout the cold war right up to the present day.

      We had lovely sunny weather for most of our six weeks in Scandinavia, except for a few days in Norway so I think we got quite lucky! And yes, their history with Russia is quite "tense" I think! One of our Airbnbs even had an air raid shelter!!

    Helsinki looks like a great place to visit in the summer and a great day trip! Interesting to see the fortress, and the Russian wooden houses once they occupied the area.

      It definitely is! I'm not much of a winter person so I made sure to visit the north in summer haha!

    A church that's also a lighthouse. What a sensible idea in that location!

      I don't think that was the original purpose but it definitely makes sense!

    What an interesting place. It's too bad the fort didn't stop the Russians but so cool that it was designed to offer an advantage from any vantage point. I can only imagine the amount of work it took to construct this massive fortress! Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks for watching! I think it's one of those things - it would've been great when they built it, but eventually technology caught up.

    Certainly a highlight of Helsinki. This one we have been too, great place to explore and spend a sunny day out in the bay of Helsinki. What were your thoughts on Helsinki, i have been a few times and the best i can say is its a great town for a stopover but you dont need any more than two days

    • @WorldHeritageJourney
      @WorldHeritageJourney  6 лет назад +1

      We had two days, one for the fortress and another to look around the town proper so I'd agree with your assessment! 😂
