Great video! I was wondering if you could one day do a video on the cleanup process of oil painting. I’m new to it and I’m really struggling to find a good efficient way to clean, and also to properly dispose of my paint and mineral spirits.
Thanks Michael. Anyone who doesn't find an unboxing like this interesting, is not really an artist. Haha. There is something about getting art supplies that is better than Christmas, unless you get them for Christmas. And how many easels or pochade boxes does any artist need? Well... don't ask. I've seen lots of people talking about Rosemary & Company brushes and so I decided to purchase some. I had some Pro Stroke brushes that I liked (since some of the bristles are as long as the ferrule), and they can really hold the paint. But I found some similar ones from Rosemary and decided to get an assortment of different kinds. The price for what you get is excellent. I'm not being paid to endorse them. They are far superior to anything I've ever used. They are not as expensive as I thought. I'm sure you've seen others talking about them. I purchased around two hundred dollars worth and my wife said "What!" Everything from extra long flats (they really hold the paint), to daggers and liners, etc. If treated right, they should last for years. I've used marble dust instead of pumice for panels. My concern with pumice is that the roughness may chew up the brushes faster when scrubbing or blocking in, but the gesso being plastic may coat the small particles in a way that they are not like sandpaper to the brushes. I have a batch of gesso with marble dust that absorbs paint too quickly and that drives me nuts. Anyway, all artists know that flats will turn into filberts and filberts into shorter flats eventually. Most artists I know, don't ever throw away their brushes, since gnarly ones can still be used for certain painting effects. Or maybe we think so, and are just hoarders at heart.
I was wondering if you could use marble dust instead of pumice. (much easier available here in France). But you say that it absorbs too much of the oil? So would you advise against going down that road? Thanks
I just started getting into oil painting. I’m in the process of getting all the required materials. All I need are the paint themselves, brush cleaner, and some linseed oil.
@@chamberlainpaintings I love your spirit you are so free and on a higher level just being yourself..you are my John Lennon 😀 im 27 with an old soul & i admire you !
That was a very informative and helpful video about supplies. I needed the recipe for your medium, so thank you for that. The information on brushes is also much appreciated. Deciding on brush sizes, brands, bristles, length, etc. can be like trying to take a drink of water from a fire hydrant.
I enjoyed this and learned some good tips. For some reason I thought you were supposed to wait at least a year before varnishing an oil painting? Do you have insight into that? My paintings look a little dull when they dry, and I think a final coat of something would brighten them up a bit. I just thought I had to wait, so I was using a little Dorland's wax medium on top because I heard it could still let the oil dry and not create an airtight seal.
You don't dispose of the Gamsol, you let the pigment settle out in a separate container and then reuse it. It usually takes a couple of days for it to become clear again. I take empty paint tubes and rags to a hazardous waste disposal site in San Mateo, CA.
I'm slowly just starting in the oil paint world- I'm really intrigued by the different colors and brands people end up using. Added this to my 'liked' videos for future reference. I'm happy I found your channel! I also like your intro and outro by the way =D
So many pretty brushes 😍😍😍 I once spent 300 dollars on brushes over a single quarter of oil painting in college, being a painting major is a whole new level of broke college kid 😂
So true! Although I've heard that, in the arts, painting has the highest return on investment. Meaning that the cost to create a painting is low compared to the sale price.
Allways exciting to unbox a delivery , allthough at my age I only buy tiny tubes lol . Is that nice wood behind you going to be made into frames ? Inspired by your other videos I have just ordered an 80 tooth blade for my chop saw and am going to have a go at making the float frames. Don’t know if you’ve tried Jackson’s black shiro hog brushes ? I find them very good value. I tend to buy my gesso in smaller pots as I paint smaller and it tends to go lumpy , I suppose the thing is to gesso a lot of boards at the same time
I have a half dozen unfinished projects, still waiting for my local supplier. " May take up to 4 weeks", they said. But you have it all in stock, I said. I could drive over and pick it up, but no. I'm told to wait. Maybe this week.
@@chamberlainpaintings East of Toronto, Canada.. Because I dont paint full-time & have work and other stuff to occupy my time, it's not hurting too much- just frustrating. I have other options, which I will use next time.
Haha, those paints definitely have snob appeal. I have a friend who is a total snob and she painted a large canvas entirely black. She insisted on Old Holland. 😂
gosh I pay $11.99 for a small tube of Windsor and Newton, I can only get these where I live here in New Zealand. brushes we pay between $6 and $36. very expensive but important
I agree getting new art supplies is a joyful thing.
I love an unboxing, recently stocked up myself, I was like a kid in a sweetshop.
Oh my, I read that as kid in a sweatshop at first.

Happiness is getting a big box of art supplies. 😀🎨
True!

I feel fortunate to have 2 Blicks in the Atlanta area and 3 in Boston when I travel up to New England.
Picking out new brushes is like Christmas!

I need to order some Rosemary brushes! Yes, the pumice is hard on brushes. Especially the natural bristle brushes. Synthetics are more durable.

thanks Michael, very helpful!
Love your medium recipe. Also that you use Winton is encouraging for the old budget.
ur soo talented!!! love how u give so much detail!
Have you tried playing around with Oil pastels on top of an already dry painting? I just started and you can get some really cool textures.
No, haven't tried them. Maybe I will!

Hello, pumice powder is added to gesso on the first floor the panel, or other floors do. Thanks
That was fun and informative. Thank you for sharing these videos.
I buy gallon gamsol on amazon. Seems to bypass that rule.
Wow, good to know. And you’re in CA?

You can use Gamvar as soon as the painting is dry to the touch. 😊👍

Can you some day do a live painting demo?
You mean like RUclips livestream or something like that?
Yes
Please do!
Great. Patient. Down to earth instructor..
Thanks Paul!
super cool unboxing, yay new art supplies :)
Do you ever buy oil paint in those 250ml cans? Always thought it would dry out before I finished it off. And have you tried Rosemary & Co brushes?
I bought a large can of white once, but it got crusty and lumpy before I could used all the paint. I buy large tubes instead. 👍
i hope you've an amazing weekend!
Thanks, you too!
...great way to spend that stimulus package...I plan to do the same :)

What ratio of pumice to Utrecht gesso?
2 tbsp. per 1 cup of gesso. I then add a bit of water to make it flow. Pumice for the third coat only.
Can marble dust be used instead of pumice? Thanks
