Starting as a new manager is daunting. Understanding the bigger picture and creating a vision starts you on the right foot. I share 4 important tips for new managers covering strategy, value creation, goals and helping your team. Each makes a big difference moving from employee to manager.
Next, the peer to manager transition was gained by hard work. This alone will no longer help you. Stop doing and start delegating to create more value than you can on your own. As a junior manager, you will still be doing ~80% of the time. The other 20% managing is critical.
A big danger transitioning into a management position is the perception you must impress and justify your promotion. You have 3 - 6 months to impress. Focus on being flexible and responding to the needs of your team. The most valuable of my first time manager tips is to focus on helping your team.
After the transition from co-worker to manager, you create the most value through your team. To maintain team performance, you need to build relationships with your team, or reset them. Make a lot of time for one-on-one meetings with your team members.
How to be a new manager definitely includes asking lots of questions and making small changes. You may feel the need to make your mark. Don’t rush this - work out the right mark to make first.
Ask a lot of questions and listen carefully. I absolutely do this with any new team I manage even after 25 years of being a manager. When you are new in the manager role, you have an amazing window to ask a lot of questions - use it.
Last of my new manager tips, is to create your learning network. In a new job and starting a new career, you have so much to learn and new skills to practice. Get as much help from any source to work out what you need to learn and practice. Do this and save years of time.

It is super important to flex your approach to the situation. I remain very confident that each of these 6 actions work well - how you implement them in Walmart may be very different from office environments. I have worked picking potatoes, in burger joints, bars .. all the way through to world class businesses. I agree that the environments can be very very different, so flexing is super important.
