Join us on our journey as we leave a life in corporate america to come back to Wyoming and help on the family ranch.
Our Wyoming Life features our Wyoming ranch and our ranch family. Giving you a look into the workings of ranching from raising cattle to raising and harvesting crops. Erin will join you weekly out of the garden, showing you how she helps provide for our family through growing produce and selling at local farmers markets, and Mike will take you along as he tends to the animals and land of ranch, from calving to fencing to planting and harvesting hay.
Project lists keep me sane as well.
Today's addition to my project list cane in the form of a txt message from my wife saying "we have a rat in the garage...I want it dead". Needless to say, traps were set right away.. we a have our project lists.
Always good watching your videos. Even my son likes watching it for the cows haha.
haha, I hope you got that rat. Yuck. Thank you Chavo - Mike
Glad to see you back on the ranch and up to your ears in projects again!!
haha, you know the feeling! - Mike
That is really smart diversifying your hay storage locations.
Thank you George and thanks for watching - Mike
Dude your face when Erin came in on the list was the best face ever
Good Grief Mike - y'all are slobs & hoarders.
SO AM I. LOL
Today was a leaky kitchen faucet. Fixed it. But it takes me 2 times as long as anybody else.
hahaha, The stuff we have around can be a bit overwhelming. Thanks Betty, glad you got it fixed ! - Mike
Erin cracks me up. My wife does the same thing to me. LOL Now I'm going out to continue building my shed.
Isnt that fun! Good luck on the shed - Mike
As you know from your visit Ft.Worth is still rather warm. I love this time of the year. It has cooled down some, but it will be a couple of months before we will be wearing sweets. Still, like you we have plenty to do before it starts getting cold. The nice thing we have plenty of warm days in the winter to do things outside. I can't wait to see what Erin is going to put in her new high tunnel. How are the new pigs doing. Love to see them.
Thank you, ft worth is a change thats for sure. lots to do, pig update is coming up and Erin is getting rolling too! Thanks - Mike
The irony for me is putting off my own list of things to do because I'm watching you make a list of things to do. "Work on fence, work on trailer, fix the pen... oh cool Mike and Erin released a new video!"
#same
David Coston ...yup, today I got sidetracked by Mike and Erin....it’s a must do, watch them.
haha, thanks David, you just made my day. If you dont mind, I would love to come watch you work too hahaha - Mike
I don't hear excitement in making that chore list! Lol thanks for sharing & neat model T...
The to do list is never fun to make, more exciting to cross stuff off! Thanks - Mike
Erin is like my wife she doesn't ask me if she can add to the honey do list she just keep adding and adding. LOL Looking forward to hearing about the texas trip and what you learned and want to try on the channel. Man I can't believe you are already in the 50's there we are still in the mid 90's with pretty high humidity as well. Wish I could come there just for a few days or a week I could get a lot of the little things done so you could work on the bigger things. Have a great week. God Bless!!!
haha, adding to it is always fun, crossing them off is better! It is chilly here though, will probably warm up again but I feel winter coming lol - Mike
Same here Nashguy! It was HOT and Sticky here too. The humidity has been renamed and I now call it Air you can wear!
I understand about the Humidity its been bad here as well just walk outside and stand there and sweat
Sweatshirts! I miss them. Another 90 degree day here in MI. UGH 😑. Should be the last one for awhile. My niece was asking for just 1 snowflake ❄️ today lol. Let’s not get too crazy now. Thanks for the videos...
Thank you Mary and thanks for becoming our newest patreon! A package with goodies is headed your way! - Mike
Great video as usual . If only there were more hours in the day to get stuff done. Thanks Mike
No doubt, and days are getting shorter - Mike
I need to get my project list on the wall so I can get a fresh start on our property.
It works, just dont stare at it too long! Time spend planning is time you can be doing! - Mike
As time goes by and as everyone sees more and more of the ranch and how it operates I'm sure the ideas that people have will get better and better! I think this "family" wants to help you guys in all sorts of ways but maybe doesn't know how. If you keep showing your videos on ranching, I'm sure we'll all be there to help in some way. Thanks for all the hard work and I hope it's some what fun for you now more than just work.
Very good point Mark, it is amazing the family we have here and we are very thankful. - Mike
Thanks again Mike 🚜👌
You're welcome Kyle and thank you - Mike
Thanks the video was great! I loved it !
You are welcome, thanks for watching - Mike
Hi again! Yes back to work as usual and the big push for getting winter ready. You know the drill! Lol I thought I was the only one thst actually wrote down everything need to get done before the white stuff. Whoa you even do hunters! I'm convinced you might put Boredom on your Christmas list as I always did. Whenever asked I'd always say I just wanted a box of boredom lol lol !!!! A caution tho be careful what you ask for because you might get it and now in my life I'd give almost anything to have that list back. So keep on Keepin on Mike and always be thankful no matter how long that crazy get ready for winter list gets!!! Onward you go and start checking off the list one by one. Extra thoughts and prayers for you all this time of year...
Onward and upward :) Thank you very much - Mike
That firetruck is really cool. Almost as cool as the wagons. Hey maybe for ranch day you could set the big one up like a chuck wagon. LOL! It would be a lot of work but it would be pretty cool. Gotta love sweatshirt weather! We have gotten a few chilly mornings so far but still hot during the day. Sept. October and November are my favorite months in Ct. Around here we have concord grapes that grow on the sides of the road in some places. Yesterday I was on my motorcycle and I could smell the grapes. Thats when you know fall is coming!
That does sound nice, gotta love those cool rides. Thanks Jerry - Mike
Nice working weather
Very nice! Thanks John - Mike
Back on the ranch and it feels like we are all home. Loved the drone shots of the ranch. 🐂
I like them too, they are fun to do and look amazing. Thanks Dennis - Mike
Good video Mike winter coming fast
Thats for sure, thanks James - Mike
I love the project list video!! Keep up he good work👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you very much - Mike
Hey, Mike. Just gotta take it one day at a time and do everything safely. It sure is a lot better working at home and working on home projects than having to work in the city, dealing with a nagging boss, and dealing with rude people on the roads. Enjoy every minute of it my dude. I would add, maybe try free ranging your pigs so you don't have to do as much cleaning of the sheds, its nice to see pigs free ranging on pasture and seeing them running around almost as if they were cows too. Y'all have a nice and neat ranch, and I would love to help ya out if I had lived closer. Cheers, Mike.
Thank you very much, we have never tried free ranging the pigs, we would have to do some different fencing, thats for sure. - Mike
Hi Mike & Erin great video 👍👌😀😀
Thank you very much - Mike
Get Erin a nice green dry erase marker, color of a honey-dew inside.
That way spot them easily . Then remember honey-dew's that get to old start to rot, so has to be removed from the list & placed in compost heap.
I'm sure she won't find any humor in this, hope I got a smile out of you Michael. 😜
hahaha, the honey do's dont really get a chance to get old. Erin is good at making sure they get done lol - Mike
Lol..."can I add some stuff?"
Now if I could just hide my marker from myself . . . !
You probably wear them out! Thanks - Mike
I like your project list a lot better than my own! Mine is mostly projects just in and around the house, a place I'm growing tired of. I'm also not thrilled about winter being just around the corner. I'm hoping for a gentle winter, I dont think my body can handle a harsh one at this rate.
Thanks for sharing.
I hope for a calm winter too but you never can tell. Plan for the worst I guess. Thanks Bill - Mike
@@OurWyomingLife always better to have too much hay than too little for sure. Also much easier to clean up the yard before the first snow as well. Snow plows, blowers, and ice have a tendency to destroy anything left out.
And to think I was planning on trading my old John Deere tractor for a fishing boat. Maybe that's not such a great plan now!
Erin was laughing at you and I know shes thinking. I want it done now Mike😂😂😂
See yall in Thursday
Oh I know she does, trust me, her stuff gets bumped up on the list usually - Mike
Maybe you should divide the "Project list" into columns for urgent and less urgent and on the far end "Honey Do's". LOL
Not a bad idea, thanks a bunch - Mike
Looks like you have plenty to do, you could really use a hand out there.. wish I could help clear the list. Good work Mike!
Thanks Sean, I know you would help if you could - Mike
I've missed this series so much! You're lucky! Because our highest temp. is 95 degrees Fahrenheit! Have a great rest of the evening!
brrrr. lol thanks guys - MIke
No point in hiding marker from Erin ... she would just get a new one... 😜
That is very true, thanks Jan - Mike
Mike, you got to love it.
Excellent video!
Thank you very much - Mike
Thank you so much for all you do Mike and everyone from Westminster MD
You're welcome Doris, we really appreciate you watching - Mike
You should get some pallet racking for the shop and storage barns, they hold a lot of weight and they're cheap if you find a deal on them.
Great idea, thanks - Mike
Your radio background really shows. You’ve got a great voice! Also, probably the best straight to camera audio I’ve heard on a RUclips channel. Just curious if you do any post audio processing. I’m a recording studio guy. Really like your channel! It’s inspiring!
I will add to your project list. Haha “put old wagons away” it may sound strange but I always enjoy preparing for winter. For me it’s a great time of year when harvest is over and all the field work is done.
Thats another thing! Thanks lol - Mike
I was thinking the same thing.
Always plenty of work to be done on the farm. Good luck with that list and hopefully you don't need to add to much more.
Oh I'm sure it will fill up again. Never ending - Mike
Great video
Thank you Dallas - Mike
Love the vids, keep em coming. 👍🏼
Have you ever thought about getting a double bale spear for the front and back?
I have but right now I am just working with what I have Thanks Matt - Mike
Mike and Erin my husband doesnt care for the list i put together for things to get done around the house so the list gets lost all the time. When my dad was younger he worked on my Aunts farm in Mn and my friends always made fun of him cause it was his vacation time. You do a great job with these videos. Thank you
Thank you Linda, thats why I have a board for the list. Harder to lose "accidentally " :) - Mike
I have a suggestion for the project list.
I noticed when I first started watching your show last winter that you had everything you had to do on the list, including stuff that you had to do weekly and monthly, basically the chores of the ranch. Maybe if you broke the list up; have a section on the right with all the projects like the fire truck, the pig pen roof, the hydrant, then next to that, list all the things you do weekly, and then monthly next to that. Also, things that are more urgent, right them in red, such as fixing the hydrant, that way it don't get buried in the list. If you pull the chores out and give them their own section, then the looking at the project list won't seem so daunting. At least that's how it seems to me, an outsider just looking in.
That makes sense, very good idea. Thank you Mario - Mike
@@OurWyomingLife You're welcome, Mike. If you choose to do it, I hope it's a helpful suggestion.
Having worked as a corporate consultant I would suggest a storyboard rather than a running project list. The storyboard would have headers (Post-its or index cards) that can allow you to place specific items under each category. For example, you would have categories for the garden, hay production, repairs, etc. Those are your header cards that can be placed along the top with items also written on Post-Its or index cards) underneath. Using Post-it Notes, you can move and sort by category as well as priority, rather than re-writing. I recommend using 3X5 Post-It notes. I tell groups to let their minds naturally generate the lists/ideas, then take the next step by sorting by category and priority. Storyboarding is great for brainstorming as well as problem solving with groups.
Mike, on one of your trips out and about the yard there, could you swing a quick video shot of the progress of your flock of pigs? Haven't seen much since there were placed in their pens. Thank you. -Bob
Sure thing, we need to check in on them. They sure are eating alot! - Mike
Thanks Mike we all have a list and it never gets done but it is all ways one step at a time.
I fight for life now with cancer do I don't stop I just take it one day at a time now. I don't get to run my equipment much anymore but when the family now looking I get out and get on one of the dozer and more it around to they make me stop. Mike you give me a lot of peace to see you do stupid things but each time you learn something news too.
When you get with your wife tonight and your alone stop and tell her just how much she means to you. God bless you and the kids as they grow they help you and also drive you crazy but teach them to work that's life.
Take care your friend Cliff
In our thoughts and prayers.
Thank you Cliff, you are right, one step at a time. You are always full of wisdom. Thank you so much - Mike
Man, If I lived out by you guys I would more than gladly come out and help out, but I don't and don't plan on moving to Wyoming. We have a farm ourselves, in southwest Illinois, and need all the help from the family that we can get. no cows just crops and, I am very excited to see what the ranch has in store for the future!
I am excited too, every year is something new. I would take the help though :) - Mike
looks like you could almost make some second cutting on those fields
Looks are somewhat deceiving, the only thing that has grown back is mostly alfalfa. I have tried to get a second cutting before, in fact a neighbor just came and cut our ditches again to see what he could get. Its pretty sparse. Last time I tried to get a second cutting looked like this, I got 6 bales on 70 acres. Thanks Joshua - Mike
U guys are good people
Thank you Ronald - Mike
I wish that I lived in Wyoming I would like to come by and help you with the project list just a reminder make sure you check the antifreeze in your tractors and bobcat and all the other equipment
Oh yea, thats a big thing. I have some radiator work to do to and a few flushes to do. Fun Fun Thanks - Mike
Luv ur channel...
Thank you very much ! - Mike
Hey Mike, if you have to dig up that broken hydrant anyway, why don't you install an automatic water w a heater, and make a part of your winter chores easier?
I thought about that, I would have to run it out a bit so that I could place a waterer where cows could get all the way around it. Of course it all comes down to money, this hay is threatening to clean us out. Thanks Darren - Mike
I think you need a blue heeler cattle dog
Thank you Rickie - Mike
a lot of people don't ranch life is not an easy life and the work is never done and come on mike it was 98 here in iowa today and you are wearing a sweatshirt. I am so not ready for winter. have a great week
Well if it was 98 here I wouldnt be wearing a sweatshirt lol Winter is coming, eventually :) -MIke
A project list keeps your life productive. You may never clear it but step by step you work through your priorities. Let me see if I can come up with some more for your list, lol. Better work on my own first.
haha, I can add to yours if you'd like :) - Mike
Hi Mike.
Have you every thought about trying to make a pitch for full length show for a network or streaming service? Just a thought.
We have had a couple approach us but they would like some more reality show type changes. Thanks - Mike
No changes are needed in my opinion. The way you structure your videos are just right.
how many of those 60" bales per acre? Also, can you show the process of unrolling hay to feed the cows including how to remove the plastic mesh. Thanks.
Sure thing, we have lots of videos on feeding the cows, I'm sure there are lots more coming. Thanks - Mike
I did not know you could insure hay... "Can I get fire and theft on that?"
Theft would be a good one, we have had that happen. Thanks - Mike
Hi mike how are you today
Doing well Jacob, hope you are doing good too - Mike
Hi mike i always use to be so envious of all that green pastures you guys in the usa have (only saw it on tv , i am from south afrika ) i never thought of all that snow. Here in sa we can keep the cows on the pastures during winter with only a lick , they loose a bit of condition but pick it up in a month as summer comes. i bought bales in my first year starting farming but the economics just did not work out .the cow eats up a calves value in one month and her own the next month . So i went the way of farming with nature as old farmers told me to do in the first place ,calving and weaning at the wright time of year so that a cow doesn't have a calf suckling during winter.after that farming was profitable. It will obviously not work for you, but just saying.i really enjoy watching your show
And miss my farm terrible after watching
I had to stop farming due to the political climate here.
May God bless you and may all go well with you and the family
Back to work and back to project list. Whoe sensing a little tension at the end or should I say the addition to the project list. Well you'll work through it.
hahaha, it happens. Thanks - Mike
Mike can you do more cattle hauling videos in the future
Oh I am sure I will, Thanks Jaime - Mike
Mike do you wish you would have kept the other ranches just for more hay ground or more pasture in dry years. Not trying to be personal just kind of wondering great videos
Yes, lol, the north ranch was 30 miles away, old neighbors up there are having no problems with hay this year. Kind of a bummer - Mike
On the upside, the list *looks* a lot shorter than it used to be. Which if I'm honest would make me a tad paranoid that I'm missing something off my list. Thanks for the video.
haha, I am missing some stuff but no need to get myself in a panic yet :) - Mike
Nice video
Thanks Trent! - Mike
At 4:20 is that a speck park cow?? Thanks for the video
We arent sure of the exact breed, Gilbert had them before we got here and even he didnt know. Thanks Benjamin - Mike
another good one what is the countdown like on the Summer Hat Ritual?
Last year I cooked it on November 4th, should be about the same time. Might have to make it more interesting this time though :) - Mike
I was your first like
Awesome, thanks - Mike
You get any ducks and geese up there??? Bc id totally be down to ckme hunt them for ya
Not really, we get a few Canadian geese in spring but thats about it - Mike
Well darn lol if you ever get the chance to go duck huntin it will change ur life forever
Hi Mike just wondering what size T shirts you guys wear ? ill drop off a few things in a week and a half.
I wear a large, Erin wears a medium :) - Mike
Your be an XL if Erin keeps "making" you taste test Carrot Cake and Cinamon Rolls! Thats sounds like a job for Nashguy
What brand of gates do you use or do you build your own
Most of them are powder river gates - Mike
no word about the rest the hay left standing are you going to cut it or just leave till next year
Do you mean the alfalfa that has regrown in the field? -Mike
I would say ur biggest lose on the ranch is feeding ur cows straight round bales, which grinding it and mixing other ingredients is going to cost a lot more money but with feeding round bales ur looking at 20 to 30% lose from each bale where as grinding and mixing a ration is only 5 to 10% lose
❤
How do I get a Our Wyoming Life belt buckle?
Soon we will have them for sale on the website. Add web developing to the list - Mike
What frost free brand water hydrants do you use?
Most of them are woodford I believe Thanks Fiona - Mike
Erins highlight though !!!! ;) I want to know what it it is please!
Wet n wild, precious petals. :) - Thanks
Our Wyoming Life Thanks 😉👌🏽
Looks like you need a ranch hand.
Well the ranch hand budget went to hay this year, maybe next year. Thanks - Mike
Hey Mike, if you could get any tractor you wanted, what would you get?
Ive herd him say in a live stream. He didnt care as long as it starts.
@@mattfencl3614 oh, ok then. Thanks
Hey mike is your truck a gas moter
My truck is a gas, next one will be diesel - Mike
hey, mike i have a pic of your to do list if you want me to send you a printout.HaHaHa
hahaha, I saved mine too. I'm sure all that stuff will end up right back on there - Mike
Why don't you find permanent homes for stuff so you don't have to move it constantly.
It does have a home. On the ranch but things are needed all over the ranch. -Mike
I put up a board for my project list and when I walk away the list seems to grow. I to had to hide the marker from my wife.
hahaha, they are good at making it grow faster! - Mike
would it be nice to say all done i have nothing else to do. lol yeah right
I dont think those words have ever graced my lips lol Thanks Rodney - Mike
Love your videos do you guys ever do any AI with your cows my family and I run about 90 head cow calf in Iowa I love watching how things have to be done differently based on geographic locations and it also nice to see we aren’t The only ones with a growing list of things to do, hope all is well it’s been raining here all day and we have already had 4” in the last 24 hrs
Keep up the good work and just take it one task at a time! #GodFamilyCows
Thats for sure, one step at a time. Thank you very much Dylan - Mike
Is there any books on ranching you would recommend?
Well not really ranching but the little house on the prairie books and then read the Rose series of the little house on the praire
😇
Thanks Robert ! - Mike
Do you have an algae issue in water troughs that are exposed to the sun? If so, how do you keep up on cleaning it? I have one that grows algae so bad I have to spend a lot of time cleaning it every couple weeks.
I saw this the other day at tractor supply. Not sure how well it works but it was cheap. I'll try it myself soon when I get back to town. www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/stock-tank-secret-2-oz
I have seen that stuff, not sure if it works, hopefully David will let us know. Gilbert used to put a peice of copper pipe in the tank to combat it as well. Thanks - Mike
Instead of crossing it out... Why not just erase
Mostly thats for your benefit, so you can see what we have gotten done Thanks - Miek
first
some day
Awesome Thanks - Mike
Maybe you guys can find a professional organizer lol
That just sounds like another project lol Thanks - Mike
hey mike I sent you and erin an email with my number and have a couyple of tricks for yall that will help you a lot call me
Thanks Lynn, I'll see if we can squeeze it in. - Mike
