For the past three years I've been gardening like my life depends on it, because it does. I retired on social security, and I very quickly realized that it made more sense to improve and enlarge my garden than to exhaust myself with a part-time job. In these past three years, I've learned better gardening techniques, invested in garden equipment, including a wheel hoe and a drip tape system, and learned to start my own seeds. Now that this virus situation has occurred, these improvements are serving me well.

Yes they certainly will serve you well to do as much canning if at all possible when the time is right and you see your yard sale anywhere with canning jars or anything that you can can an grab it because you'll be needing them through the years and you'll be surprised how many jars you can go through in one year and these times they make it seem like it's going to be over quickly it's not going to be over quickly it's going to go on and on and on and I'm actually fearful because I have COPD so I'm very fearful to go out in public always go with my mask and gloves and for I getting my back in my car I take clothes off and I wear the mask to all the way home before I come in my house I'll take it off in my shoes and then clean myself up but this whole thing has me fearful when it comes to the end times as how the Bible speaks I'm certain things and now and I'm very concerned but yet I'm not because of its time then I welcome his arrival God bless and have a great day keep your strength up bending over in a garden is very hard at my two I'm disabled broke my back and then it over it's very difficult for me but I've got my tomatoes started green peppers the essentials I can't don't have Garden space for a lot of things but I would love to you make good Investments God bless have a great day

Our motto this year is "Grow like your life depends on it." We've expanded out from just our raised bed garden to an earth garden as well as working harder in the high tunnel. Just have to rid myself of my friendly neighborhood chipmunk who dines daily out there. Grrrr

Appalachian Mercantile to get rid of chipmunks, we tried a friends suggestion and it work wonders! Take a five gallon bucket. Fill it halfway with water. Put enough sunflower seeds in to cover the top of the water completely (they will float). Lean a 2x4 up on the bucket to create a little ramp. We had wind issues blowing over our 2x4 so we notched it near the top to hook it over the lip of the bucket. Worked great! The little guys get attracted by the sunflower seeds, get curious, and take the plunge. It started out a little slow at first, but in the end we were getting between 8 - 12 a day. We knew we had some, but NEVER suspected we had that many! You might want to dig a deep hole away from the bucket too! Just dump and cover them. Mess free, unless you’re like me, get clumsy and fill your boot by sloshing! Hope this helps. God bless!

One thing I do with my onions...I use my food processor to chop them...then I lay a flat layer on cookie sheets...put in my freezer to flash freeze them for 2 hours...then into a freezer zip lock bag...flash freezing them keeps them from freezing in a chunk...at cooking time...I just sprinkle out how much I want, re-zip and lay flat in freezer...last year I got 5 gallon bags, I do the same with bell peppers...and celery too...I use these in a lot of my cooking...nice to have frozen items that pour evenly from your freezer bag...

To use one of Kevin's terms...in regard to "it may not look as good"...it's homestead perfect! We do what needs doing and we use what we have on hand to use...plastic net wraps off round bales are used with pvc pipe bend over to make climbing trellis for our green peas...works great...and yes, we did plan on doing a lot more than last year...and it's great that it will help us preserve more safe food for us...what has hindered us has been the weather...cold and lots of rain...hopefully...this last night was the end of the 39 deg nights...my tomato starts, green bean starts and bell pepper starts have been sitting in our greenhouse too long...need to get out in the raised beds...We wanted this journey for the reason that I don't trust our food sources anymore...now more than ever...it's really needed...

I feel the same as you. My changes are the following, Incorporating veggies in all of my flower beds, as well as adding several containers on our deck for food instead of just flowers. Im putting onions around my knockouts. hopefully it will add food as well as deter the japanese beetles. Ive added more garlic, more herbs and Im also planting other yards I have for BEd and Breakfast area. We cant get truckloads of compost til may 3rd so Im using cardboard and straw until then as a mulch and help to soil. Where I had straw last fall, it sprouted everywhere. I let it get tall enough to pull, because the straw on this clay soil kept soil moist it pulled out with no effort at all. I just layed the pulled hay sprouts as a green mulch. Using what I have to mulch until I can get truck loads. Im pulling weeds and leaving them on top to breakdown and mulch.

Two years ago I thought it would be fun and educational to try home canning and I gradually picked up the jars and equipment at thrift shops or when they were on sale. I thought I'd make pickles because that looked easiest but found that I am no cucumber farmer! In two years I think I grew four cucumbers! This winter I saw Sarah's tomato canning video and I'm hoping to have better luck with tomatoes. I even found that crank operated tomato strainer that Sarah uses on sale! I don't have a lot of bed space as I'm more of a perennial flower gardener, but I'm growing twelve heirloom plants from seed. Half of them have sprouted under the grow light so far. I also sowed four types of lettuce seed outside last weekend. It's not really that I am worried about a food shortage as much as that I have an interest in tradition. I've also tried quilting and sewing. I've learned that I don't particularly like those activities but I did get an appreciation for the amount of work and skill they require. I enjoy your enthusiasm and learn a lot from your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Our garden was pretty well a success in 2020. I've learned how to make tomato sauce, salsa, pizza sauce from the tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers we grew. I also planted onions, collards, mustards, green beans and okra.
Most of our garden vegetables were put in the freezer. This year I am crop rotating and adding cow peas and turnips. We are using the woven fabric as well and it definitely helped me keep down the weeds.

Definitely expanding my garden and I purchased a small greenhouse also. Like everyone, trying to grow more of my own veggies. Can't raise my own meat living in town, but can work on the fresh veggies. Keep on teaching us. I watch every video for the last 14 months. God bless.

I start my Onion seeds in mid January in a dish pan I drilled holes in the bottom. I put seeds very thick and they will be the perfect size to plant right around this time of year. I also doubled the size of my growing area to increase my yields and grow new things. Love your videos.

We have been growing our own food for many years. We can and freeze our food. We are trying the woven weed fabric from Growers Solution for the first time. I hope we have success like you. I'm excited to see how your onion garden does. We already planted ours. I'm still learning every year better ways to garden from others like yourselves. You know the saying, your never to old to learn. I'm learning so much from the two of you. Thank you for all that you do!

S and K: you have the best instructional channel of all. You gave me the confidence to start canning. I learned how to bake bread from you. Because of you I used the black plastic in my garden last year and for the first year, I did not have to spend hours all summer fighting weeds. Even noticed this spring that weeds are not returning to the garden space like they usually do every year.

We have a small homestead farm in Costa Rica. We grow a lot of fruits and some vegetables. Where we live we have a lot of rain. We have to use small greenhouse to grow vegetables. We found that kale and tomatoes do well in the greenhouse. Our fruit is all tropical. I also grow Moringa trees for the leaves which we dry and crush. Moringa is a super food. I like all your tips and will use some of them on my farm.

We have added 2 huge raised beds to our 3 that we have already. We are planting with more of a purpose to can and freeze. I have been watching the canning videos and getting jars when I can. I have a little over a 100 I think that should get me started this year. Thank you so much for all your hard work. God bless

I am planning on doing the same thing this year with onions and garlic. I started using woven ground cover a couple years ago, after watching one if your videos. Keep up the good work. I also ordered one of those mini garden augers for the drill, can't wait t I'll use it.

We have increased the size of some of our in ground gardens added a few more and have many containers as well. Our raised beds are straight square foot gardens this year. It’s going fairly well. Some of the seeds we purchased didn’t germinate and that wasted valuable time. Our compost is a precious commodity from the fall and winter. We’ve just finished using it all and I’m so thankful we were able to fortify it with chicken, duck and rabbit manure that we traded plants to get. A new pile is already begun and we have our own rabbits now. Thankfully we also had purchased additional drip irrigation supplies before lockdown started. We have way too many fruit trees, berries, grapes, and garden beds to hand water!
We’ll see what harvest looks like but I’m feeling good about things so far.

Paulla Wells remember to have fun! And as my gardening class teacher used to say, “ Your growing season will be chock full of teachable moments!”. I keep a casual notebook of gardening: beginning, middle, and end of the season. I jot down what I did/what worked/what didn’t. I find it so helpful to review from year to year. Good luck, and have a blast!

The most valuable tip I got from your channel is the woven ground cover -- I got some last year and picking beans, raising tomatoes, etc was so much easier without all those WEEDS. I was amazed at how much easier it made gardening. Thank you.

My biggest change is trying to get sourdough starter going. Flour and yeast are difficult to get, and uve never made homemade bread. But, I'm hoping I can get this going and grab flour when it's available....no yeast needed. 😊

I am with you guys. I am all about food production right now. Partly because I have nothing else that I can do but I have quit my job and am enjoying just staying home and working on things that I couldn't get to before. Still really wishing that I could have someone here at least once in a while to help me with some things but I am managing to get a little bit further every year by myself. So very happy to say that a lot of my perennials that I started in previous years are beginning to take off

I have a container gardening area that I enjoy growing things in. Each year, however, the weeds would get very high around my containers making it difficult to tend my garden. Because of you, I ordered some of the woven weed barrier. It should be here in a few days. I’m so excited to put it down and put my containers on top of it! I am retired and gardening is my therapy. I’ve learned a lot from you and other RUclipsrs. Hopefully, I’ll be able to enjoy some garden vegetables this year. Love you guys!! ❤️❤️❤️

I ordered some of the woven fabric as you have suggested and I cannot wait to get out there are get everything started. Weather here in southeast MI has been awful. The last 2 days it has been snowing, and the temps are not looking good for planting anytime in the near future. I am going to have to transplant some of my starters pretty soon. I was one of the lucky few that started ordering some of my seeds, earlier before all of this shelter in place started. Here in MI our governor has closed all home improvement (lumber, paint, and flooring) and also the gardening centers at ALL stores. For me this has been a serious wake up call, and I have promised myself to ALWAYS be ahead of the plans. I hope y'all are staying safe! Thanks for brighting up my morning!

Still recovering from this illness so to say I'm a little weak is unstated and the moment I bend I feel like I'm falling over . I have my onions to plant yellow and reds all my onions I've grown from seed I started them in February I haven't had any success with sets
In the past many have just bolted but I wish you all the very best .
Far be it from me to even try to give advise but I would be careful about growing in close proximity to rotting wood as wood rots it pulls the nitrogen from around to complete the process .
    Blessings to you.

I ordered the weed cloth to use at the bottom of a raised bed but when I watched your vid about it well, it's going on top. I'm a fan now. Thanks for all the help. Take care, Tom.

Last year we planted a beautiful prayer garden in half of our back yard. This year we are looking to add to the other half of the yard with two raised beds and a two foot area along our back fence all devoted to food. This has really made us think about our own food production.
