Windows update was the main reason I switched to Linux. For a while, I used windows update blocker to disable updates until I wanted to update. But that leaves windows vulnerable to the many attackers out there until you update again. Then when you do, it takes forever, especially if a feature update is available. And if you don't manage your updates somehow, windows eventually becomes unusable. Even with a rolling Linux distro like Arch or Debian Sid, updates are not a problem. All of the other reasons you mentioned also were factors in why I switched.

Yes, I prefer linux over any other OS for a couple of reasons :
    1. The OS is yours, so you can change whatever you want if you have the knowledge
    2. As Linux uses a package manager, it's apps are more secure and stable.
    3. Doesn't have ANY unnecessary things pre-installed.
    4. Basically Linux is whatever you want it to be.
BUT........it doesn't work out-of-the-box for the most part, yet, there's when newbies get frustrated and go back to windows. Because they admit that windows sucks, but they also feel linux is BROKEN. I've been using linux for 1 year and only I know how much tinkering I had to do to make everything work flawlessly. So the conclusion is, Linux is better, for some usage. But if you want the vast majority to grasp it as their default, you can't get away but to make things easy for the end-user.

I so badly want to switch from Windows 11 to Linux Mint. Since Windows 7 it feels like every release becomes less of an OS and more of a bloated data collection platform. :/ I did research, tinkered with Linux Mint on the USB, then installed it on a secondary drive. Played with it for a while and wow, I freaking love it. It looks beautiful, feels snappy and non-bloated, I LOVE how most stuff is free and easy to get. It is a really nice feeling. Plus, oddly for me, the audio was better. I had speaker fill enabled out of the box on spotify and youtube (something I can not figure out in Windows to this day, lol). I even found lighweight alternatives for my fan curves and RBG (which I thought would be a massive issue). But, as mainly a gamer, I did run into issues and complaints. Mainly no Raytracing or DLSS support on my RTX3080 and absolutely no good free alternative to Bluestacks/NOX to play emulated Google Play games, both of which are pretty big issues for me. So, I feel like for me the trade off would be too much right now. BUT...I will continue to watch all the Linux youtubers and playing with the OS on a second drive. Maybe one day the time will come where I switch over for good. :)

Ever since you said the-words "RTX 3080" I recognized it as a nVidia GeForce graphics-card. nVidia graphics-cards have been having problems working-well in Linux; I don't blame you for the issues you've been having.
I don't-know the specific-specifics of why Linux has had issues with nVidia graphics-cards, but I know it has something-to-do with nVidia corporation not wanting to work with the-Linux-Foundation in getting their-hardware-drivers into the Linux kernel[, for maximum compatibility] (it's weird/ironic: the old nVidia (the one from the 1990s) 's graphics-cards worked-well in Linux (one of the reasons-being because the drivers were open-source), while ATI-Radeon graphics-cards were closed-source. Ever since the-2000s (I don't-recall what year exactly, but I know it was somewhere around between-2000-and-2010, at the beginning of the 2000s), nVidia and ATI did an "about-face"[/180-degree-turn/total-U-turn], and nVidia closed-sourced its drivers, whereas ATI opened-them-up, and now AMD (which bought ATI) works-well in Linux, whereas nVidia graphics-cards have problems :-/ ).

Freedom to me: To be able to have my desktop look the way I want it to. To be able to install a program and know that it's not going to have ads and, when there's an update, the app won't be removed without my permission. To know that I can uninstall any non-system app and it will stay uninstalled unless I choose to install it again. Can't tell you how many times Windows has reinstalled OneDrive with one of their updates. To be able to look at a weather widget (a true widget at that) and not be hit with news at the same time. There are only 2 main reasons that I'm still using windows off and on. Certain video streaming (Xfinity Stream being one of them) doesn't work in Linux (at least I have found a way yet). The other reason is that while a majority of games I play do work (and fairly well at that), I'm still in the process of figuring out how to get some games to work in Linux. But I tell ya, I'm finding myself more and more dreading having to go to Windows for any reason. I mean Garuda KDE Dragonized just looks so good and really easy to use so far. I'm still hanging on to Pop OS, though.

from someone who is one week into the Linux switcheroo.....my main reason to switch my "productivity" PC to Linux was to give it a longer life. Windows 11 was hammering the older chip set and it was becoming more and more laborious to get my lab work done. It took about three months to a) land on a distro I could understand, and b) find acceptable Linux versions of the software I use. I'm a happy camper so far but it was not an easy journey to finally wiping the disks and start over. Linux ain't easy I'll say that much

It was performance for me. I bought my HP laptop in 2017, and it was starting to struggle in Windows 10. It used up like 2 gb of RAM when idle which was insane. Educated myself on Linux a little bit, tried Manjaro, works like a charm, never looked back. Won't say it's "good as new" but I haven't had a performance issue since.

There is an exception to the no-reboot assumption. If the kernel is updated, you will most likely have to reboot to use the new one. There are some distros that allow on-the-fly kernel updates, which do remove the need to re-boot, but that capability is not available in most distros.

What Linux ultimately needs to convince EVERYONE to switch not just Techsavyy people is to get their shit together and offer a cheap and easy to use alternative to windows and mac. It's that "simple". BUT with a community that prides itself in complexity of their distros and the headspinning amount of distros this is not likely to happen. Maybe a company just has to start a kickstarter to build the next Distro that has the average user in mind, where you can install games and plug things in and use the UI intuitively and thigs just work most of the time and not have to worry about installing weird updates that have effects on like 15 other packages.

    • @eBuzzCentral
      @eBuzzCentral  2 года назад +1

There are plenty of non-tech savvy people that switch every day. Linux Mint? PopOS? There are plenty of plug and go operating systems out there. And quite honestly narrowing it down to one OS completely defeats the purpose of Linux, that's what Windows and Mac users are stuck with. The reason there are so many distros, is because of the freedom of Linux, it's truly open source. Thank you for the comment and thank you for watching the video.

While technically you can continue to run after an update it's pretty common to have bizarre issues crop up. The reason is because for many distros (I know arch does this at least) updating the kernel will wipe the existing kernel modules off the system. So now the running kernel cannot load modules it needs, for me this has caused things like audio not working, new devices to not load, network mounting issues and so on. In the ye-olden days before the kernel had module support 2.4? 2.6? this wasn't an issue as the running kernel was entirely self contained, and also I recall systems not automatically wiping the kernel modules back then either, I don't know why this is done now, it seems like a terrible default. Anyway, in short, after an update reboot the system especially if the kernel has been updated. In a server environment where you prevent modules from getting wiped, relaunch updated daemons, and live patch the kernel then yes you can keep a linux system running basically indefinately, but that's not the reality for basically any desktop user. In fact, if distro's aren't going to implement a robust live patching system then the update really should just prompt for a reboot as it would result in fewer tickets, maybe some do already, dnno, I've never used a gui tool for that. One thing that IS true though, is that unless you are talking a major version upgrade it's only ever a single upgrade run of your package manager, and one reboot. No repeated reboots of windows.

I know in the modern age, privacy is a different thing now than it was, walking down the street for example will more than likely have you on a camera of sorts for example but in my own home, minding my own business, i find it disgraceful that i can value my privacy and security as much as i should whilst using a Windows OS on my PC that i paid for. I'm still distro hopping 4 months down the line. Vista 2 Windows 11 is a heavy weight bloated spyware mess. All they have done since that mess was launched was push out updates bug fixes and security patches. People are just unwilling to move from windows becuse they are to lazy to learn something new. If there happy to use an os like that thats there choice. For me once I've one learned Linux then it's goodbye Windows for good.

Love your videos. I have been using Linux for years now both Manjaro, Mint. In recent months however, First in Manjaro then in Mint v21 There has been a change in the kernel which has completely broken network connections to other machines, Linux, Windows and even my NAS. I was using hardwired mounts in the fstab file which worked very well. It stopped working a few months ago with Manjaro and now also in Mint 21. I have looked on many occasions for a solution to this and have seen a few different suggestions and none work. Samba has been broken for years and is not an option. So I have had to stay with Mint 20.3 as it works fine. It will be supported until 2025. So for anyone needing network connections to other shares, this is a problem. So, with all the reviews of Linux new distros no one is talking about the elephant in the room, broken network connections. To many users this problem makes Linux unuseable moving forward. Hopefully someone will figure out a reliable workaround and not 6 pages of edits to multiple config files. We need an app that allows you to find and auto mount your network shares that is useable for all users. I hate windows but... the networking works well.

One big reason I have abandoned Windows...on my high end gaming PC I had upgraded to Win 11 just to see if it would run (as I knew little of TPM but had seen it in motherboard instruction manual, might say out of curiosity and if I wanted to update to Win 12 later this would show me I wouldn't need to upgrade my computer). One drive (or whatever MS calls it, their cloud nonsense), Win 11 many games didn't run quite right, Retroarch had screen tearing...just no, no no no (ran it both with my RX7900XTX and GTX1080ti, both ran the same so it was a Win 11 problem). Win 10 had no issues with games. I NEVER had the cloud enabled for the 7 years I ran Win 10 on both the high end music production PC I built and the high end gaming PC I built (one had 6th gen i7 and the other 2nd gen Ryzen 7). Needless to say, cloud was enabled by default when I reinstalled Win 10...I had some important files that were deleted off my computer because I was "nearly out of storage" but thank Bill Gates I can upgrade for 9.95/month...deleted my files...deleted them...they are gone...I should have backed up...I have in total 39tb of storage...I spent well over 10,000 between these two computers...I have never been that angry over computer stuff and I am a power user. I got ALL of my files (pictures, music, etc etc) off my Windows machine and on the other I have Mint running (as I was experimenting with Proton, got Fruity Loops to install and be stable in Wine, about 98 percent of my Steam library flies on my Linux system and I have 3.5tb in my Steam library). Until I totally migrate everything over (get Kontakt libraries to run in Wine as some people have been able to do it, or find open source alternatives like Reaper which I have ran in Windows). I will NEVER keep sensitive files on a Windows system ever again if I can avoid it. MS can kiss my ass.
Advertisements within explorer for Office 365, Cloud storage, etc etc etc.
Political messaging within my OS/web browser that I neither want nor asked for. The newsfeeds (yes I know they can be disabled, if I put over 5000 dollars into a computer, I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DISABLE NONSENSE LIKE THAT. I don't want to see it, I don't want to have to go out of my way to disable it, I don't want to hear it, I don't want to debate it, and that's that!
Call me paranoid...BUUUUUUUTTTTTTTT.......I uninstalled their cloud storage nonsense, that bloatware is (supposedly) no longer on my windows system...is it still running in the background without telling me? For years I would install fresh version of Windows on any computer to minimize or eliminate the bloatware. Many pieces of bloatware I needed 3rd party software to get rid of (as I never learned the Windows registry), without it, "uninstall" the bloatware, it doesn't budge. MS is locking Bios down with TPM...why wouldn't they do something shady like that? That penguin won't treat me like that, Tux is friendly (he just won't hold your hand more often than not). MS is acting like Big Brother/Apple. I'll pass.
Finally, experiencing that discovery process with a computer again that I haven't experienced in at least 20 years (despite being frustrated and sometimes inconvenienced). Learning all the cool things I can do with the command line. Finding that processes like transferring files seem to be so much faster from the command line (entering text commands I think is slower than point and click but the processes seem to be so much faster when started from command line than the gui). Besides, most of the software I use on a day to day basis is FOSS so why not take that next step if the proprietary software I run I can get to run in Linux?

I use a 2013 hp upgraded from 4G ram to 8G didn’t really need to it never was an issue but blender would get a little laggy. But I run at ~350-400MB of ram at rest. So much better than windows.

If you go to a dev and say hey btw this is broken help me with your game? They don't as if you're using windows or linux, they ask to make sure your Nvidia drivers are up to date they assume you're on windows. This is the biggest issue with most high end PC users, if you aren't just writing code then windows just makes sense.

I used it from when launched. But all the linux distros need to be more user friendly. At least make some distro very minimal only for experienced people and let some distros included all the necessary things out of the box, it may feel bloatware to you, but to vast majority this things are necessary to work without you installing anything new.
So linux needs more time, maybe a year or two to get to that level.

I think a lot of your Windows stuff is pretty exaggerated, I like Linux better than Windows but I don't know what you were doing to have 19 days of downtime a year and updates taking 3-4 restarts (besides a migration/upgrade from Windows 7 to 8 for example). I just don't believe it, I left Windows for a lot of the reasons you listed but instability wasn't one of them.
While Linux servers are very stable due to simplicity and a fleet of IT staff, Desktop Linux can vary quite a bit. Depending on the distro Linux can be garbage stability wise or on par with Windows as no system works 100%, what you should of commented on is recovery time. I think Linux even from a completely borked system can recover extremely fast compared to Windows and that's pretty amazing.
EDIT: Also no support in the Windows community? While I agree some things just cannot be helped because of the closed system the Windows community forums are just as if not more friendly than the Linux community. As much as I like Linux the community it is smaller and has a good portion of elitists in it, I have been told several times to fix minor issues by just changing to a "good" distro because yours sucks or RTFM even if the documentation sometimes is not so good and they haven't even read it but don't want to help you.... I'm sure these people are in Windows too but with such a massive sea of users you more often run into people wanting to help.
I hate defending Windows but I can't just exaggerate to people about the good of Linux or the bad of Windows...

  • @Boda.Attila
    @Boda.Attila 6 месяцев назад

Hello, sir. Some of your points are exaggerated, and a few are pure BS (you know what I mean). I experimented with Manjaro, Linux Mint, and Zorin OS for about a month.
First of all, I never needed to learn or use the command prompt on Windows, so I expected the same on the Linux terminal (oh boy, was I wrong).
I tested Linux on a Lenovo ThinkPad T430s with 8GB RAM, a third-gen i7, and an SSD, which is about 10 years old. Windows 10 ran flawlessly on it; it doesn't meet the requirements for Windows 11.
You might be wondering why I wanted to try Linux. Well, it was influenced by people like YOU!
The primary issue lies with software, not the aspects you showcased in the video, like the Windows Store; I'm talking about practical software.
Consider two examples, one proprietary and the other not. For battery health while using the laptop mostly in the docking station, I relied on proprietary software called Lenovo Vantage to set a charging threshold and maintain the battery charge between 55% and 60%. Achieving this in Windows is straightforward. Another issue is that Windows 10 consumes more power than Windows Vista (which was pre-installed) and generates more heat. Strangely, the fan remains off until the CPU hits 70°C, then suddenly ramps up to 100%. To address this, I installed Notebook FanControl, and after configuring it, the CPU stayed below 60°C.
Unfortunately, the two software mentioned above have no Linux version, or at least I couldn't find one. After several days of searching, I found a solution for the battery threshold, but it lacked a graphical interface, only offering commands for the terminal. So, I ended up copy-pasting lines without understanding their implications, ultimately breaking the OS. No problem, I reinstalled.
Learning curves are abundant when dealing with Linux; I had to grasp the basics of the terminal, understand package managers, had to learn to use alternative software that I never heard of before, and much more. Need to install software not found in the software manager? You guessed it, more terminal commands.
The issue is that those familiar with Linux often don't openly discuss these challenges!
So, I invested a bit over a month, facing sheer frustration for seemingly nothing. To top it off, nearly all the Linux forums where I looked for help had people mocking me, saying things like, "You use Linux and don't know how to use the terminal? You don't know what flatpak is?" Even after explaining that I'm a Windows user attempting to switch to Linux, the mockery intensified.
Instead of excessively praising the Linux environment, let's be honest and discuss the downsides as well.
