The North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG) occasionally have a l;every ballot for its locomotive fleet. The J27, initially NER P3, has appeared in NER livery, as has the Q6 - NER T2 - and once-over the Peppercorn K1 appeared in LNER passenger green, although that was never the case in BR service, having been built by North British on Clydeside in 1948. The NER's mineral/goods loco livery was lined black, never green, which was used only for passenger locos

One thing I have noticed with the initial 4 locos that Oxford Rail are releasing, is that their BR Nos. all end in 7.
    1010, Later 65807
    1214, Later 65847
And then there is 65817 and 65837

Of course, if you want some real 'movement' on your layout you could base a layout on Darlington. In the 1950's-1960's there was a swathe of industry on the east side of the main ECML, with Cleveland Bridge, Whessoe and Cochranes lined up. You had the numerous J94 0-6-0 ex-MoS, Darlington-built Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0s built at the nearby Hopetown Works, Darlington Bank Top station on the west side of the ECML (designed & built by the NER 1877, Thomas Prosser's work, as was York and Middlesbrough of the same year). Four bay platforms either end and two through platforms for ECML and former S&DR through stopping traffic from Saltburn or Stockton-on-Tees to Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle (Stainmore line for Penrith and Blackpool). Non-stopping traffic such as the 'Elizabethan', 'Flying Scotsman' and 'Queen of Scots' (Pullman) services, as well as Red Bank Parcels with stock from as far afield as Southern, Western, Scottish and Eastern Regions, numerous through freights and transfer traffic between yards.
Enough for ambitious modellers to sink their teeth into, and plenty of motive power choice from A4 and Deltic to humble J72 and J94 - all available as ready-to-run or kits (for Class A8 and other North Eastern classes not covered by the manufacturers).

Wilson Worsdell, Locomotive Superintendent of the North Eastern Railway (NER) - successor to his brother Thomas, who designed the G.E.R's 0-6-0 tender loco that was classified J15 by the LNER - designed locomotives only for the NER, as did his successor Sir Vincent Raven.

It must have been something in their genes to have two excellent locomotive designers as brothers, Alan :-)

Really looking forward to this. Such a real world model as opposed to the usual crack express Pacifics.
First became aware and wanted one in the first Railway modeller that I bought. March 1966. An O scale NER one looking very purposeful in the railway of the month. Called a P2 or P3 though in the NER classification.
My local hobby shop provides a very reasonable weathering service that will remove the only jarring feature of the shiny axle centres and wheel edges. That is if the model ever gets delivered to my far flung location. I have still not seen any N7 models where I live.

Hi John, I agree - its fantastic to see locos such as this modelled alongside the larger passenger engines.
If you're struggling to get hold of any models, don't forget that we ship throughout the world so we can get an Oxford Rail N7 (or any other items) to you.

Thanks for watching Adi, glad you're enjoying the videos.
Whilst the J27s were freight locos they may have hauled summer excursion trains to the seaside resorts in the North East which would be formed of 6 wheel coaches similar to our Genesis vehicles, so thats a very nice idea indeed.

The J27s and J26s were never vacuum fitted so wouldn't have been able to have been used on passenger trains. The preserved J27 was brake fitted in preservation. They were all black liveried from new.

I've waited yonks for more North Eastern engines since the Hornby Q6 cropped up. Now Oxford Rail's about to bring out two, J27 first and J26 next. I've had two of the Class J27 0n order almost since they were announced. The J26 is up my street as well, a good clutch of them allocated to Newport (Middlesbrough) shed, 51B. They were fewer in number than the J27, and both Wilson Worsdell workhorses. Let's see an appraisal of the J26, Hattons.
Neither the J26 nor J27 carried green (passenger) livery, as they were designated 'mixed traffic'. Being fitted with three-link couplings there was no way they could draw passenger traffic. I think maybe you're confused by NELPG's J27. 65894 being fitted with both screw couplings and vacuum brake. This was a decision made by the Group to increase the engine's capabilities to earn more income for the Group. Not having been a member of NELPG at the time, I'm just guessing. Take a look at the NELPG page through a link on Hub Pages, hubpages.com/@alancaster149 (the slide show at the top of the page below the mugshot).

Thanks Alan, its certainly a great time for NER and North Eastern modellers with the Q6, J27 and now the J26 on the way. The latter is something we may produce a video on in the future, so keep an eye on our channel.

@@HattonsModelRailways Of course we mustn't ignore another - post-WWII - standby, the K1 built from 1948 by North British. Although the K1 2-6-0 was allocated around the BR Eastern, North Eastern and Scottish regions, the North Eastern Region was allocated a large number, (40 in all in 1950 between four sheds: Darlington 17, Stockton-on-Tees 8. Heaton on Tyneside 5 and Blaydon west of Newcastle-on-Tyne 10). From mid-1950's they were seen wider, including the now well-known 62005 at York before she was moved away north to Teesside and Tyneside. Of course i'd like to see someone bring out a Class G5 0-4-4 tank engine, seen all over the system between the Humber and the Borders. No North Eastern layout can be without one. Currently only kits are available, and having one built would leave me with little change from £150.

I will look forward to the finished model J27 in the LNER Livery. I would also like to see the GER version sometime soon. Martin. (Thailand)

    • @HattonsModelRailways
      @HattonsModelRailways  3 года назад

Hi Martin, these were originally NER engines rather than GER but we may still see a pre-grouping version in the future. They would look splendid in the GER blue livery though I've got to admit - Dave

  • @AlanLancasterAlanRLancaster

They didn't get on. Wilson had all his brother's Class C1 0-6-0 engines rebuilt (LNER/BR J21) to 'simples'. Several other classes were rebuilt as well.

    Thomas, we love you.
The new Bachmann 00 gauge models of Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends are on my wishlist.
There's Gordon and Henry, Edward, James and Toby,
Annie and Clarabel, and don't forget Percy.
Terence and Bertie, Diesel, Duck and Lady,
    Lots more friends for you.
He's always up to mischief, that cheeky little train,
He chuffa-chuff-chuffs everywhere, he's always playing games.
Sir Topham Hatt will scold him though he loves him just the same,
Our favourite little engine, Thomas is his name.
I just had to sing the lyrics because I love Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends to this day. Who doesn't?
