  • Made in 2015 to celebrate 60 years of ITV, a look back at a time when it wasn't a single channel but a conglomerate of regional channels, all with their own idents and identity: occasionally bizarre, often charming, this is the show that looks the history of ITV in the face.
    Episode six: Anglia. The Wales of the East, starring Aubrey Buxton, Nicholas Parsons and some sort of puppet cat.

    Anglia House is still going strong today in Norwich. Officially, it's listed as ITV 1 studio. Yet the lettering on the front of the building says Anglia Television in that old Times New Roman font.
    Another fun fact. Anglia Television Ltd was only desolved at companies house as recently as 2017. From 2006 until then, the entire ITV Network was officially listed as Anglia Television Ltd.

    Survival, Sale of the Century, Knightmare. I thought that was it, but from reruns on Sky Arts I found out they also gave us another gem, Tales of the Unexpected, which I would have been sure was by Granada. It attracted the kinds of big names you would expect of a Granada or a Thames.

    As a tiny child I genuinely thought the ident was the intro to a TV show about a metal knight called Anglia who rode a silver horse and got up to all kinds of metallurgical medieval shit. I was constantly dismayed that it didn't go on to show metal knight killing bronze goblins or rescuing copper princesses. Instead it went straight to 'Gambit' or the terrifying intro sequence to 'Tales of the Unexpected'. My mother tried to explain on more than one occasion the knight was an ident, but I wasn't a very bright child nor was I prone to being satisfied with reasoning.

    If I remember correctly, the Anglia knight was commissioned as a prize for a falconry competition by HM the King of the Netherlands - a prize he was competing for and that he hoped to win. It clearly didn't happen. The knight's pennant was modified to display the Anglia name.

    • @SuperGingerBickies
      @SuperGingerBickies 2 года назад +4

      I read that somewhere, too. If it was HM the King of the Netherlands, the silver knight must have been crafted somewhere between the 18th and 19th Centuries. This is because, for the entire 20th Century, there have been queens - Queen Wilhelmina (who reigned from the beginning of the century as a girl up to her abdication in 1948), Queen Juliana (1948 - 1980) and Queen Beatrix (1980 - 2013?). It is only now the Dutch have a king: HM King Willem-Alexander.

    The Anglia flag ident sting was reputedly written by Lord David Dundas if I recall correctly.
    Growing up in the Anglia region in the 1970s through to the early 1990s, I remember that pre-Anglia flag ident era, when Anglia produced programmes were shown we didn’t get the short Anglia Knight ident, instead we got an "Anglia Presents" caption board in blue with Anglia logo & text in yellow and a cut out photo of the Anglia Knight.
    Feature films and shows imported by & shown on Anglia also had a similar "An Anglia Presentaion" end caption board and just before Birthday Club there would be an "Anglia Presentation" caption board.

    BC is a leopard.
    I only know this because through work in radio we did a _do you remember_ type review of him. To clarify this was far an East Anglian station.... This was in September 2019.
    I contacted a few bods at the vestigial Anglia studio who confirmed he is a leopard and he now resides in a display case in the foyer, I also believe the Knight model is displayed alongside him.
    Until that point I had also assumed he was a bear.

    Alongside Aubrey Buxton, Anglia's other figurehead was film producer Sir John Woolf, who produced John Huston's The African Queen, before winning an Oscar for producing Oliver! It was Woolf's clout on both sides of the Atlantic that he was able to get big names to come to Norwich to appear in Anglia's television plays and even Orson Welles' Great Mysteries and Tales of the Unexpected.
