I think the guy will follow the judge's orders. As the judge explained, if the guy doesn't honor the bond conditions then the court will issue a warrant for his arrest, and if he ever tried to get on an airplane flight they will take him into custody, and, for example, being held in a foreign country for an open DUI case in the states would be a nightmare. He could hide out in the states and risk the arrest warrant, but if he wants to go anywhere by airplane he's f'd. I think the judge did an excellent job calmly explaining the severity of the situation the defendant has put himself into.

well, to be fair a lot of defendants without counsel don't understand the particulars of a probable cause hearing, as well as what the state will do if bond conditions are violated. It is why people need attorneys. The law can be quite complex in its operation. For example, and as the judge explained, the probable cause hearing isn't a trial, and anything the defendant says can and will be used against him, so him voluntarily making statements was shooting himself in the foot. He didn't comprehend why. He needs an attorney.

The only one thing he didn't do is once he heard the income amounts he should have immediately clarified that the guy was above federal poverty limits and doesn't qualify for a public defender. The guy had to circle back to that when he was considering whether or not to sign for the bond conditions. But overall this judge continues to amaze, he uses his obvious high intelligence for good purposes.
