Wow, I just saw On Sew On video and she mentioned your video. I started to cut back on buying patterns sometime in 2015. Because I became overwhelmed by humongous number of patterns I own. I began to feel overwhelmed. So I created a plan, I began to do exactly what you mentioned; I started to look at my pattern collection and realized I was buying the same patterns over and over again. I began to pay attention to the style lines of the patterns, etc. In 2016 I decrease my spending by 15-20%. In 2017, I spent 10% and so far this year I bought 2 patterns for 1.00 each . I sewing a gown for my daughter, hence the patterns. I understand your reason and it makes perfect sense. Even though I am late to your party I will not purchase any patterns until July 1.
Thanks so much Alethia, yes I had WAAAYYY to many patterns last year. I do have a list of patterns I would like to get once this is over, but I will go back through the list to ensure there are no duplicates. I think most of the ones I want are Indie patterns. I'll share what I plan to purchase some time in May.
Thank you so much for the free pattern links. I am home with the flu so I sat here and downloaded all the free patterns today. I enjoy your videos. I will not buy a pattern along with you! I just started instagram so if I can figure out how to share your picture of the no buying, I will. I have not figured out how to repost, lol. I just started back sewing after many years of a break. I've missed it! The PDF patterns are a little intimidating, so the free ones definitely help break me into it easily. Thanks again!
Patricia, hope you begin to feel better soon. Glad the information will help ease you into PDFs. Whenever you get setup on Instagram definitely tag me. Thanks so much for watching.
I'm getting the shakes just hearing no pattern buy, you know this is an addiction...LOL, this is a great ideal because we all have so many patterns and prizes are a great incentive, thanks for sharing.
I laughed out loud at the "getting the shakes"....yes, it is a true addiction - LOL! Hope you find these and some of the other suggested free patterns mentioned in the comments useful. Thank you for watching.
I am just learning how to sew, found you via And Sew On. I won't be buying any patterns at all where I live. Seems these folks down here are straight pros, you can find huge fabric stores but not one pattern in any of them lol Sooo, I'm on the hunt for free printable patterns so thank you for sharing your resources. I am proud to say I made a blouse without a pattern today. It fits BUT it looks like I am just learning to sew lol
I applaud your goal for you. For me, I am advocating being more selective in which patterns I buy. There are some terrific new patterns with unusual sleeve variations and I will probably purchase those to increase my versatility of switching out design ideas in the patterns I have. I know it is hard to resist buying patterns, they are wonderful dreams of what we want to do. Please don't be harsh on yourself when you do. Have followed your sewing journey and admire the skills you keep acquiring, Happy Sewing!
Thanks so much, I appreciate that. I think being selective about pattern purchases is good too, it's very easy to jump on the trends. I'll be sharing soon how taking the Craftsy classes have truly helped so far this year. Thanks so much for watching.
Nice selection of free patterns Nateida! Lol, I'm already disqualified but I'll be following your journey this year:) I love the idea of hacking up a well fitting basic to create a new look. I did so to McCalls 6886 a few times last year and intend to use it again this year, adding a front zipper and collar (since I'll be nursing once baby arrives:)
Oh Rikki a front zipper and collar on the M6886 sounds BRILLIANT...excited to see that for sure! I appreciate you commenting and following along. I already have a list of patterns to potentially purchase in July.
This is right on time I decided that I wanted to focus on what I already had. I choose my make 9 out of patterns I already owned. I believe this will help me focus on improving my skills and not shopping.
This is a great idea, and I have decided for this year no more fabric buying or patterns. I do have a question who do you use for printing your patterns.
Such a great philosophy Natieda and I for one will be trying to reuse and hack my own patterns for sure. There are so many sewists out there with inspiring ideas for altering a pattern to give it a different look which is helping me gain confidence with that. Good luck with your goals and plans for this year 👍😘
I drew up my 'make nine 2018' goals just a few days ago, and have already challenged myself to some self drafted patterns and the sorbetto top, so I think I could do this!. Really appreciating the list of free patterns to try, it'll be nice to try out some new indie pattern companies!
Awesome Kriy, hope some of those patterns work out for you. If you are on Instagram make sure you tag me and post the image so I can count you in. Thanks for watching.
Since you didn't make mention of intimates: Evie La Luve (High-Waisted Brief called Maxine), Ohhh LuLu (Bikini-style called Celeste) & Megan Nielsen Patterns (bikini-style called Acacia) all have really great free underwear patterns. I never buy underwear now, since they are so easy to make and such a great scrap buster for knits. My parents raised me to be frugal, so I am always looking for free/clearance/discount/markdown/sale etc when I shop for //anything//. Even when things are marked down I still take FOREVER to decide. I could be in a Jo-Ann for like 3 hours going "Do I need this pattern? It's kind of similar to this other one I have. If I just change this or that then I could have what I want." Sometimes my mom will smack me like "Rebekah! It's 99 cents, just buy it! If you don't use it you can sell it on. Let's go!" LOL!
THANK YOU for so much for sharing those free patterns. I didn't think to include intimates, so thank you!! Yeah, I'm being more picky about my pattern selection too, even for the 99cent ones, so I understand - LOL! Thanks for watching.
You're welcome. And thanks right back for your list. I picked up a bunch of new patterns from it. And then, after being reminded by another comment, I headed over to Craftsy to see what new freebies they had to grab even more. Yay!
I put myself on a buying hiatus too... but monday I found out that I'm pregnant and had to take advantage of some sales to buy maternity patterns! I guess life got in the way! Lol
Well that's a good of reason as any to buy some patterns. Thanks so much for watching and maybe you can hack a couple of the free ones into maternity wear. Thanks for watching.
Pattern control is important truly for those with limited space senior citizen here. But even then pattern collecting for some is of import. A scale down can be useful ,but keep checking for designs y really like, they do go away y might miss something y truly love. Even for another time. Especially If y have some space
I'm already disqualified, lol, although using up my patterns is one of my goals for the year. I'm glad your giveaway will be open internationally considering the hassle. So few are yet so many viewers, myself included live outside of the USA. I've been sewing for at least 10 years with self drafted patterns. I really got into commercial patterns last year because I wanted to expand my sewing and fitting range. I was making the same things over and over. Now I have almost 300, not to mention the literally hundreds of free patterns I have collected over the years. If you are interested you can search for my username on Pinterest. I have some great international ones pinned which I often find to be more stylish and a superior fit. Instructions often are nonexistent or not in English but if you know your way around sewing they are great.
Best of luck to you. There are 2 McCall's patterns I've been wanting for quite a while and They've been out in my size during 5 different sales. Friday I'm going to try again but am using a gift certificate. Other than that I'm going to try and behave
Here's hoping you find the size that you are looking for. I know how it is having to run to several different locations to track down the size. Thank you for watching.
Great video and LOL!! I’m already disqualified! However, this is a great idea and one I plan on adopting this year...to try and create from patterns I already have! Thanks so much for the info on free patterns!
Utuber: Oh, mother mine Diy has over 100 PDF free patterns and tutorial how to saw. Pattern is on description box of that video. Scroll through her channel. I don't mind that's not in English because patterns are easy. BTW thanks for awesome video, always welcome informations.
this is great, thank you for sharing all these patterns....id love to join but i bought the rumana coat last week...ill join in aug if you do it again. tfs:)
I know a lot of people were waiting on that coat pattern to come out, it looks beautiful! I'm pretty sure I'll do it again in August, so stay tuned. Thanks for watching.
Disqualified! I don't Instagram so I just got a couple patterns at the $1.99 sale last week :/ Plus I had never heard about the Seam Work subscription so double disqualified cuz I signed up :) lol. Thanks! This was a really good idea and thanks for the free hook ups. I am trying to make things that are more wearable this year though. Good luck, ladies!
Thanks so much Jodie and glad you found some of these patterns useful. Also check the comments, the ladies have been leaving some AWESOME other suggestions. Thanks for watching.
The Tonic Tee from sbccpatterns is another one. I’m currently doing a craftsy skirt sloper class with the intention of (eventually) drafting my own patterns and not buying. I didn’t expect to enjoy the drawing process, but i am.
Thanks so much for sharing Jan! I have Suzy Furer (spelling) class saved in my Craftsy list, hoping to do that one towards the end of the year. I will have to keep practicing my drawing- LOL! Thanks for watching.
Yes amen I know what you mean I hate I'm getting tired of keep going out here by and more and more patterning I'm not buying no more even more work with I got
Thanks for all the links! I'm with you on hating to stick PDFs together. What copy shop do you use? I hear about them in the UK but not in the US. Good luck with your pattern ban.
If you are in the USA I use www.pdfplotting.com some people use print shops like UPS, Staples, etc, but they are way too expensive in my opinion. Thank you for watching.
GREAT JOB!!!, I'M LEARNING MORE ABOUT PDF PATTERNS. WHAT IS 'COPY SHOP' VERSION? I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL YOUR VIDEOS. THEY'RE VERY INFORMATIVE AND INSPIRING!! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!!! I KNOW YOU USE CASHMERETTE PATTERNS A LOT, I'VE LOOKED AT THEIR WEBSITE AND I LOVE THAT THEY OFFER PLUS SIZE PATTERNS. THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THAT INFORMATION TO US!!
Retia Aiken a copy shop versus is where the pdf pattern is on 1 or more large sheets of paper that don’t need to be taped together. You email it to a copy shop like Staples and they print it for you saving lots of hassle.
Ditto what Lynn said, except I wouldn't use Staples or UPS to print, they are super expensive. I use www.pdfplotting.com they are very inexpensive and ship priority if you get the order in before 12noon. Thank you for the compliment and thanks for watching.
Hi Charlene, actually I looked on their site for it and couldn't find it. I probably overlooked it, but thank you for sharing it here, I appreciate it and thanks for watching.
Anyone know if a free pajamas pattern for a girl size 10? I'm looking for my granddaughter. This no but should be easier than I thought. I found a pattern for these pj's at Joann yesterday, it was $18.95!!!!! YIKES!!!!!
Ms. Maureen try Craftsy & Pinterest for free PJ patterns. And only buy patterns at JoAnn's when it is a sale. You can sign up to received their monthly sale flyers and it lets you know the pattern sales in advance.
Yep, what TripleJack said. Also, I think it was Patterns for Pirates, Rebecca Page definitely have children's patterns and I want to say I saw free children's one their site. Check those out. But also search as TripleJack suggested.
Hi All, these indie designers also have free patterns: Megan Nielsen, In the Folds, Tessuti Patterns, Mesure twice cut once, Grainline Studio xx
Thanks so much for sharing and for watching.

Great group of patterns!

This is such a great idea! Have so many patterns that I haven't used yet. I am in!! Thanks for the challage.

RubyLovesRocket Yes, I love the Maxine briefs pattern, it is VERY high waisted but I just dropped the waist by 3 inches. Her instructions are so good.
Hey, sometimes there are days you just really need some big panties. LOL! Yes, her RUclips channel has great instruction videos too. Very helpful.
THANK YOU for so much for sharing those free patterns. I didn't think to include intimates, so thank you!! Yeah, I'm being more picky about my pattern selection too, even for the 99cent ones, so I understand - LOL! Thanks for watching.

Hello was this challenge for 2018? Im a new follower of yours and I would love to do this challenge.
Hi Roena, welcome to my channel! Yeah, unfortunately it ended in June, but hopefully you can still enjoy some of the free patterns mentioned.
Thank you
I've already messed this up bc I went Saturday. I should be faithful going forward!
LOL! Hope you were able to get the ones you wanted. Thanks for watching.

Have you seen Hemlock Tee by Grainline Studio? Free but one size fits all
Hi Charlene, actually I looked on their site for it and couldn't find it. I probably overlooked it, but thank you for sharing it here, I appreciate it and thanks for watching.
I should have said it is free with subscription to newsletter-not on website but check for a photo of it on their blog.
