  • It was my three year Japaniversary last week! Hard to believe it hasn't been longer honestly, I feel like I've been here forever 😂So today I'm going to be talking about 10 ways that I've changed since living in Japan...mostly for the better...I think 💀The longer the video goes, the more philosophical or whatever I get 😂 I don't know why
    What do you think? How has Japan changed you? Even if you've only visited! I want to hear!!! 😇
    These are just my own experiences!! Of course there are like....some "bad" things that I didn't talk about--trying to keep it positive 😇 And also not trying to slam my American upbringing or anything really--there are a lot of good traits I have that I'm not sure I'd have if I was raised here. It's more complicated that I can really talk about here, but nonetheless I hope you enjoy my video about this topic!
    Cases here have been on a sharp rise as you may know, so I'm going to be staying in more than usual....especially since it's so hot anyways 😂I enjoy no part of going outside in 42 degree celsius weather with a mask on 🔥
    ❤️ Please like the video, comment, and subscribe for more content about my life here in Japan in the future!! It helps me out tremendously 🥺💕

    Being in Japan really does make you considerate of others. 2, 3 and 6 happened to me as well. Maybe the world would be a better place if everyone had to live in Japan for a year 😄

    I loved this video! I visited Tokyo a couple of years ago. As a solo female traveler, it was such a refreshing trip from not only the safety standpoint (not having to constantly as you say looking over your shoulder) but also the social norm for eating alone or visiting places alone. Plus the politeness of the Japanese people is phenomenal. I can't wait to return.

    I have only visited once, but I agree with every point you made. I have been fortunate to travel a lot and Japan was my happiest experience. The people are charming. I was concerned I was seeing things through rose coloured specks, but genuinely I have never felt so happy and relaxed on vacation, which is odd considering Tokyo is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. We will be back for more when we are able to travel to Japan.

    Very cool to hear your experiences! I have never been to Japan (it's top of my bucket list though!!) But when i was 12 my family and I moved from London England to rural Ontario Canada. When you spoke about your perception of distances I really agreed cause when we lived in England a 2 hour drive was like a full on road trip and a super big deal, but here in Canada a 3 hour drive one way for me is pretty normal if I want to go to the city for the day, for the theatre, or go to a specific store haha

    • @AllisoninTokyo

      thanks! wow yes whenever European people talk about distance I’m just like….yeah….one hour drive and youre in a new country 😳 interesting how our perceptions change so much by country!

    I find some japanese teas are so good that I can recognize even when 0,0001% of sugar is added because it changes the taste so much so I feel you. I became so spoiled for options during my time in Tokyo when it comes to green tea especially. I'd recommend tea lovers visiting Japan to bring extra luggage just for tea 😂

    • @AllisoninTokyo
      @AllisoninTokyo  3 года назад

      Right!! the quality of tea here is so good if you put sugar in it ruins it (except for those cheap fountain drink teas) 😂

      @@AllisoninTokyo yap 😂 I still spend weird amounts of money to have it shipped here from Japan because even convenience store tea there is much better quality then whatever is going on in Czech Republic 😂

    This is a really interesting topic, and I always find cultural differences so fascinating.
    On the sugar thing, I think it's also a lot to do with aging. I'm of a similar age to you and in the last 2 or 3 years I've noticed a significant drop in my taste for sugar, and I can't stand a lot of the sweets I used to love. No more candy bars for me, and the teas I used to douse in sugar I drink without any at all now. I think it's interesting how our tastes change as we age.
    Thanks for another relaxing video!

    • @AllisoninTokyo
      @AllisoninTokyo  3 года назад +2

      Interesting, it could be an age thing! 🤔 Forgot I’m getting older…😭 I think it’s that combined with me constantly having less sweet things and unsweetened tea here too…I wasn’t even exposed to unsweetened tea before Japan 😂😂

    I enjoyed hearing your perspective. It’s interesting to compare our experiences, because while I’ve never lived in Japan (just visited), I have lived for four years in Taiwan and two years in South Korea. I think especially the part where you said Japan made you more accepting of your body type and image, I had the same feeling when I lived in Taiwan, but after I moved to South Korea that all fell apart. I felt very judged everywhere I went and looked down upon for my body type, my clothing, pretty much everything about the way I present myself and my un-Korean-ness, which made me super self conscious, more so than I’ve ever been in my life. I had to leave there and move back home due to the negative effect on my mental health (now I’m waiting for the you-know-what to slow down so I can move back to Taiwan ^^). It’s funny how countries that are so close and similar in many aspects can have such contrasting impacts on people. Everything else you mentioned pretty much aligns with my personal experiences, though, I.e., not having to deal with political ideas so much (I’m also American :), learning to be independent and unafraid to do things on your own (though again, in South Korea, there are still passing judgements about things like eating out by yourself that are hard to ignore or adjust to), feeling more safe overall, and becoming more quiet and aware of other’s comfort level and the importance of “reading the room”. I have to say the distance thing is definitely opposite of me, though - after leaving the States where everything is so spaced apart (especially since I lived in the south with no public transportation), before, anything up to five hours away was no big deal, but now I look at distances of more than thirty minutes to an hour and have to mentally prepare for the long ride ahead lol. Anyway, thanks for the interesting video. This is my first comment, but I’ve been enjoying your blogs and such ^^ I love the perspective you give and your honest demeanor. Plus, seeing all the places you visit is great :)

    Hey Allison! This video is so so interesting because one, you’ve mentioned a lot of things that I can totally agreed on like the politeness and putting other people first, not being so self-centered and the safety stuff because those are part of reasons I like Japanese culture so much and two, because you as an American realized those things in the same way I did. I’m German and from my perspective American people are way more polite and helpful then German people (in general), on the other hand I think Germany is safer than American (again in general). So it’s pretty interesting to see again that people from different cultures can have the same opinion. I like that. I hope I make any sense 😅

    Going out of my way to help others is something I do but MOST people probably won’t. People are more likely to KEEP the change you accidentally drop on the floor than give it back to you!

  • @Na2Ocean

    Oh wow…waiting. I can wait for as long as I can, which is a long time for most people. It might be b/c I live in the city but people are so impatient in Los Angeles! People will cut in line and you’d think they’d ask/get what they need and move on but they’ll take up as much time as possible making the wait worse.

    Public transportation is the WORST in the greater Los Angeles area, especially during these times! Lines are cut, buses are running on a Sunday schedule, and buses don’t connect because of delays. I definitely wish we had Japan’s systems of efficiency!

  • @Na2Ocean
    @Na2Ocean 3 года назад

    Touching on Japan’s safety, I think it’s nice that crime is overall low enough to leave your belongings in public and come right back to find them, and if you can’t find them, you’ll most likely get them back at a lost and found. I’d still be cautious if I were in Japan because there’s still a chance something might happen. Still, I wish it was like that in Los Angeles.

  • @Na2Ocean
    @Na2Ocean 3 года назад +2

    I find the lack of political awareness and/or care is worrisome and a bit sad. I live in the heart of Los Angeles and, at least in my circles, voting is imperative. The area is pretty blue/liberal so we don’t, at least in my circles, see a lot of clash of political parties. I understand how it can be somewhat of a relief to not have to deal with political clashes or people who act like a political party is a personality trait. I wish I could act like it wasn’t a thing but being Latin@ in the USA, I don’t have that luxury. Especially when a lot of politicians are banking on citizens to not vote and be unaware.

    • @AllisoninTokyo
      @AllisoninTokyo  3 года назад +1

      Yeah I definitely think the reason most Japanese people don’t care is because it doesn’t affect them much (or they think it doesn’t) and they view politicians as the same 😰 I wish it was a bit more active here

    I love your videos but disagree with the safety in America. I think it’s common to believe that you are always in danger but that is a very ignorant narrative that gets widely spread and believed. Overall, your safety is pretty high. Ofc anything can happen but going outside expecting to get kidnapped is very unlikely
