- This is a presentation of four recorder sizes in the Yamaha 300 series.
Soprano • Alto • Tenor • Bass
I would recommend the 300 series for ensembles of intermediate students, perhaps in Junior High or High School. For ensembles of beginners and later beginners, I would recommend the YRS-24B recorder. Here is a review/demo of the YRS-24B Soprano: • Recorder Demo Review Y...
Here are the recorders I present and demonstrate in this video:

Scale and Baroque sequence
Soprano - 1:15
Alto - 2:51
Tenor - 4:54
Bass - 7:12
Awesome video, Florentin.
Just to be clear, the Soprano and tenor instruments are C instruments ie when all holes are covered the note produced is C. The tenor sounds an octave lower than the soprano. Alto and bass are both F instruments, so covering all holes gives an F, and you are playing a scale of F major. Bass is an octave lower than alto. Easy to check - play the lowest note on each instrument one after the other. They're not all the same!
I wish the alto and bass recorders would be treated as transposing instruments, just like we see with other woodwinds that don't read concert pitch. It seems a bit crazy to me that we ask recorder players to learn different note names for the same fingerings.
@@communityband1 i'm really glad they're NOT transposing! i have perfect pitch, so it's a nightmare playing transposing instruments! (i know - it's a pain learning 2 lots of fingering, but for me, much easier!) :-)
Great bass is in c too
@@communityband1 what? why would they be transposing insturments? It's likethe human voices, each voices has its range. It doesnto correlate withthe voices because the recorder is much higher
@@lorenamenendez6709 ...for the same reason that other instruments are done that way. Look at the saxophone family or the clarinet family. English horns, alto flutes, etc. With brass instruments, Bb trumpet, C trumpet, and Eb trumpet all use the same fingerings, but just read transposed music. It's the same with french horns. Bb baritone/euphonium. And actually, part of the recorder family already is essentially treated as transposing. When we play recorders that are tuned to A415, we don't read music that's written a half step down. We just play a C, a B comes out, and we claim that it's still a C because we insist upon saying that A is no longer 440, but 415. That's what transposing instruments effectively are. We could just as easily say that a Bb trumpet is really a C trumpet in A=392, or an F Horn is really a C horn in A=294. We DON'T say it that way, because it's far more practical to keep track of things and play together if we all decide to have a steady frame of reference with A=440.
The idea that music notation should bend to the reader, and not the other way around, is something that recorder players already embrace. We readily accept treble clefs that are transposed by an octave, or switching over to bass clef for lower instruments so that notes stay on the staff to keep them readable. These days, essentially all music is written with notation software that makes transposing take nothing more than a click of a button. And that one click can result in a much better sight-reading experience for more players. Music engravers see it as their job to make the first-time reading performance as good as it can be, and this is one of the most obvious tools they can employ. This is an evolution that many other instruments have embraced, and I see no reason that recorder shouldn't follow. The best reason I can give you is that doing this will open the door for more people to play more instruments with less trouble. I see that as an excellent goal.
I have seen a number of videos explaining recorders and people tend to go off saying too much that it makes it all difficult to follow. This video is straight to the point and makes it all easier to understand. Therefore, this video was awesome learning material and I thank you a lot for creating this video. 👍👍👍
Keith Mitchell Thanks for watching my video. Glad you found it helpful! 🙋♂️
Florentin Tise Plus just so you know that I am 57 years old born with severe hearing loss, the good news is that I have a new pair of hearing aids that have crispy clear sound quality. With this video you stuck with the same brand instrument to explain the difference between sopranos, altos, tenors, and bass which was more easier to understand. I am hoping by learning to play this instrument will help build a foundation to learning other instrument such as guitar. Thank you again.

This is just the video we needed to help make our decision to purchase our son's first recorder!! Thank you, kindly.
In case you were wondering that baroque sequence is based off of Bach’s little fugue in g Minor
The name of the barroque sequence is Fugue in G minor BWV 578
well -- it's certainly similar to BWV 578 at the beginning, but does not continue through the literal fugal statement as that would require some higher notes.
I love Yamaha instruments. I think they get a lovely, effortless sound. Even their 10$ translucent colorful soprano takes a good sound!
Thank you for going through each one clearly ❤😊and playing them!
You are so welcome!
Gotta say, those mistakes you made are actually quite important, since it gives us more info on how you could expect your fingers to adapt to the bigger gaps, which is a major part of the buy. So thanks, very informative
Thank you for watching and commenting.
You did a wonderful job playing the baroque on all 4 instruments
Thank you very much ❤️
Absolutely informative! Concise but jampacked with all the necessary information. Thank you, Florentin.
Thank you for the different samplings. My wife is trying to decide between the soprano and alto versions. This has been very helpful. MikeinMinnesota
My favourite is the tenor!
This was very helpful. Love hearing the different sounds of the recorder..
Glad you found it helpful.
Thanks for watching.
Wow, this is like the most "RUclips" video I've seen. I like it.
I have been playing soprano recorders for over 7 years now and I thought it was time for a change.
This video is just what I needed. Thanks!
Yo any tips for a beginner like me in soprano recorder ? Thank you
Wow, professor! That's amazing!
I'm flautist since 10 years ago and this is the first time I hear a Bass flute. Thank you very mucho!!
Merci Florentin pour votre démonstration instructive !
Such an interessting video! Thank you dear Florentin😊🎶
A very professional and informative video. I would have liked to see more information on the differences and difficulties between German and baroque recorders.
Exactly what i was looking for, thank you very much for the demo. :)
Thanks for this video! It helped me identify the tenor operates on the same concert pitch c-scale as a regular soprano recorder. I might get a tenor for a yearly repeating medieval gig. I'm primarily a violin player but can rip out a decent tune on soprano recorder which I learned as a kid! Cheers!
Muchas gracias por compartir, esplendido instrumento, impresionante la flauta bajo, bello sonido.
Tenor forever...lovely sound.
Thank you. This was very nice. They all sound so beautiful.
So beautifully done. Thank you!
I just bought an alto today. It has a lovely resonate sound. Almost got a sopranino recorder but it'll have to wait until next month!
Thank you for making this video. More power
Thank you for the demonstration
Florentin Thank you very much for this interesting lesson!
Love those instruments!
Nice job with the bass recorder on the baroque sequence. And good demonstration of the range. You can tell how they sound in comparison.
This is a really nice video. I really appreciated it. Good continuation, thanks for sharing and greetings from Italy. . .
Thanks so much for the informative video!
Hello my friend, this was a super instruction I enjoyed you playing your instruments, I used play a flute in high school but don't remember very much, brings back good memories, nice share!
THANK ;YOU!! Just what I needed to know!
Thank you! Very clear commentary!

Very helpful , thank you!
Very informative, thank you
I've been wanting to try an alto recorder ever since I first dabbled with one in grade school! This was a super informative video! I love that you explained the differences and played each one. I was super excited to hear the Baroque piece on each instrument!! Great job! Thanks!!
Ni Tyjah Thigpen Look for the channel Team Recorder for lots of info on recorders
Well actually, the Bass is in F key, just like the Alto...
Soprano and Tenor are in C...
It goes like this:
Sopranino F
Soprano C
Alto F
Tenor C
Bass F
I mean, if youre talking about modern recorders.... Renaissance recorders are tuned in several keys
Nice video, thanks for the explanation
Thank you sir, this was very helpful
One thing that was not mentioned in this video, is that the large recorders such as the bass take more air to play. You could see he was taking more breaths while playing the bass recorder.
I'm picking the Soprano Recorder as my 2nd wind instrument
great video ! really enjoyed it
Thank you, Mister.
Well done! Very helpful.
Perfect demo for me to know the differences.. Thank you..

Great vídeo, congratulations from Brazil!
Hi teacher! I like the Yamaha Recorders too! I hope to get the Bass Recorder sooner or later in order to start writing some music for it in the C clef Soprano (first line of the C clef staff) or in the G clef...well, I have already some music written for the Sopranino Recorder in the brand new B clef, the Soprano Recorder in the brand new E clef. The Alto Recorder in the brand new A clef, and the Tenor Recorder in the brand new D clef. I hope one day I could show you these 4 brand new clefs. They are awesome! Greetings from Tijuana!

I have large hands, and will order the YRA-302B (Alto).
I've been making North American Flutes from cane and bamboo,
and decided to buy a recorder for something different.
North Central Florida
Nice!

Thank you 😎
Good demo👍🏽
Thank you
I love my tenor recorders.
It’s nice to be a record of Peter
You started over twice thinking you missed... you hit the note, to my ear:) Yes, I think so.
cool man
I tried an Irish whistle, some years ago. It was a big one...about an inch shorter than a clarinet, in fact. But, the holes were too far apart. I really tried to get used to it, but, after a few days, the pain in my base finger joints was so bad, I couldn't hold a cup, or a pen and I had to give it up, weeks later, when the pain showed absolutely no likelihood of ever going away. It's a shame, having to give up something loved, but...it happens. Anybody who had that pain in their fingers' base joints would give up, too. I wish keyed versions of all such instruments were available, because I'd love to take up one of these instruments, and preferably the deepest I can find, then play without terrible pain in the hands. Thank you, for your video.
Sorry about your troubles. Thanks for watching my video.
Thanks for this effort and expense.
Thanks for watching.
Great video
Thank you very much.
the bass recorders are a genre of recorders, I believe that you are playing a basset, in order bass recorders go basset, great bass, contrabass, sub-great bass, and sub contra-bass
perhaps it's us oldies who call it a bass! it was when we were young!
If theres only a plastic cheap great bass :(
yamaha calls it bass on their website
@@lorenamenendez6709 it is basset because it is the smallest in the bass family. Other term for that is F Bass.
