God bless. God wants you around. You come from a generation of class and values. My father is 90, and he is still reliving his past and lamenting how things have changed. Yes, you were fortunate to have seen this true artist. Hold on to your memories. All we really ever own are our experiences.

This is a deceptively difficult song to sing..with it's change of key..and change of tempo..bob Eberly has a magnificent command of both..his beautiful voice soaring..or deep with passion..The beautiful Helen O''Çonnell is magnificent! They were so incredibly suited to each other. What a time to have experienced this incredible music, the Bands, and the wonderful singers. I thank my parents and uncles for my love of this music..ballads..jazz..swing..all really coming from The Blues!!

How great to see the images of these two wonderful vocalists from the 40s! I grew up listening to swing music, but for some reason I'd never heard the vocalized version until I was about 28 years old. I'd heard the instrumental version but never knew the name of the song. When the two came together for me, my heart exploded and it's been my all time favorite song ever since. A fiance' dedicated this to me so it has special meaning. He's one I let get away. Still, sweet memories are stirred.

    Lyrics:
A boy found a dream upon a distant shore
A maid with a way of whispering "Si, señor."
Each night while guitars would softly play
The tune seemed to dance 'round the words that he'd say
    Amapola, my pretty little poppy
You're like that lovely flower so sweet and heavenly
Since I found you, my heart is wrapped around you
And loving you, it seems to beat a rhapsody
    Amapola, the pretty little poppy
Must copy it's endearing charms from you
    Amapola, Amapola
How I long to hear you say, "I love you."
    Amapola, my pretty little poppy
You're like that lovely flower so sweet and heavenly
Since I found you, my heart is wrapped around you
And loving you, it seems to beat a rhapsody
    Amapola, the pretty little poppy
Must copy it's endearing charms from you.
    Amapola, Amapola
How I long to hear you say "I love you."

This is way before my time but I really love this kind of music. It's so soothing and I think it's a bit nostalgic to me from Christmas music that had certain sound qualities and instruments used like this.
Ahhhh but I love this so much

    Great song.
Worth listening to in Spanish (Bocelli or Placido Domingo); Italian (Carlo Buti) and in French (Tino Rossi) All great examples and very different tempos.

Oh Mel..most definitely. To listen..live to tommy dorsey with Bob Eberley and to gaze at Ray with Miller...to jitterbug with a partner who could jitterbug..to support the guys..but the music!! As a muso's daughter with a mother who sang professionally and played 78's all the years we were growing up, I have an abiding love for these wonderful bands and musos...and, of course, the composers.

This particular recording brings back so many happy memories. My late sister used to sing this song in the '40's. I was just five years old in 1941.

Thanks very much. I enjoyed this and the “I Remember You”/“Tangerine” upload. I like “Amapola” & first consciously heard it sung on a re-mastered CD by the British singer, Ann Shelton. She had a gloriously deep, contralto voice (at least an octave lower than Helen O’Connell’s) & sang the ballad slow and smokey. I don’t know which orchestra it was but Ann sang early in her career with Ambrose & His Orchestra.
