Spin is one of my favourites. RCW I so great at presenting stories of people dealing with the unimaginable. I go back and forth between Spin and Oryx and Crake as the best sci fi novel by a Canadian.
Would like to second another comment in here about continuing on with the Three-Body Problem trilogy - from what I’ve seen it’s universally agreed-upon that the second book is the strongest one in the series, and I couldn’t agree more. That and the third book are easily five-stars reads, in my opinion. :)
I really appreciate your comment because honestly I've been dragging my heels to finish up the series. Good to know the the series gets better in the sequels
So glad to hear you liked Body Snatchers, I've had that one on my TBR for a while now and I can't wait to read it! The Freeze Frame Revolution also sounds kind of interesting! Awesome reviews, as always
Love the video. Glad you found Body Snatchers - amazing book. If you haven't read these classics yet, I'd also recommend Day of the Triffids (John Wyndham), The Demolished Man (Alfred Bester) and Blindness (Jose Saramago)
YES Finally I hear about your thoughts on The Three Body Problem! I'm so glad you liked it, and let me tell you that the next book is the most intense for me, thanks to what happens at the end of the first book! I also think it's a little more approachable, even tho we have more characters who are scientists lol. I'll have to check out Supernova Era too!
Yes! I got behind posting my reviews by I'm nearly caught up. Good to know that the second book is good, but I've been hesitant to continue on. I definitely recommend Supernova although it's a much simpler story than 3BP
The more I watch old, science fiction, B movies, the more I love them. I definitely need to read Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The Freeze-Frame Revolution sounds interesting as well.
I’ve never read Invasion of the Body Snatchers but I love the old version of the movie. It’s so good. Will have to check out the book. I have Three Body Problem, excited to check it out at some point.
Once again I enjoyed your recommendations. I’ll have to put Spin on my TBR list. I’ve tried to come up with some recommendations that you might not have heard of. But first a book that you probably have read, but if you haven’t you should. That’s Dune. It’s been argued that Dune is to Sci Fi what Lord Of The Rings is to fantasy. So a couple of older books you may not be aware of. The first is Ringworld by Larry Niven. Written in the seventies, it’s a classic in the genre; right up there with I, Robot by Isaac Asimov. The second is The Mote In God’s Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. It’s about first contact with an alien civilization and the consequences. In more recent books, a couple of trilogies; both covering a post apocalyptic world. I highly recommend both of these. The first is the Silo Trilogy (Wool, Shift, and Dust) by Hugh Howey. Literally can’t say anything without giving away plot points. The second is The Silent Earth trilogy (After The Winter, The Seeds Of New Earth, and The Fires Of Yesterday) by Mark R. Healy. I literally have not heard of anyone having read this trilogy. It’s well written and keeps you engaged. Worth a look. Thanx for all your work.
Thanks so much for all the wonderful recommendations. I still need to read a lot of sci fi including Dune. I'll definitely conquer that classic at some point
You asked about other recommendations... are you familiar with Dan Simmons "Hyperion" Series? I just started reading those and have really been enjoying them. Finding lots of great fan-art which I think is cool.
Haven't seen anybody talking about this SF series, but I highly recommend the Donovan series by W. Michael Gear (5 books so far - Outpost, Abandoned, Pariah, Unreconciled and Adrift). SF with a smattering of horror. An abandoned, corporate-controlled mining colony struggling to survive on a distant hostile alien world, what could go wrong? (a lot!). Easy to get into, even if you're fairly new to SF. As they say on Donovan... "Welcome to Donovan!"
Peter Watts is one of my fave authors! I just reread Blindsight last month and loved it even more than the first time and I really enjoyed Freeze Frame when I read it. I highly recommend his short story collection Beyond the Rift! One of the stories is from the perspective of the alien in “The Thing, it’s an excellent take on sci- fi horror…I think you’d really enjoy it! 🤗
Thanks for this Sci-Fi book report. 1 - Spin by Robert Charles Wilson - 3 Stars for me. - when I finished it...I decided to read on, hoping it would find its stride. DNFd the book. Ugh. 2 - Supernova Era by Cixin Liu - sounds interesting. I will put it into my wait list. 3 - The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu - 4 Star read for me. There are so many complex ideas put into the pages of this book, that it shouldn't work. It should become incomprehensible, but instead, it becomes intriguing. In my limited compacity, piece by piece, I grasped minutely to these tiny pieces, gaining comprehension, to the point of excitement. I should be so thoroughly confused, but instead, I want to know more. Very interesting. 4 - Freeze-Frame Revolution by Peter Watts - Interesting. Will look into this one. Thanks. 5 - Invasion of the Body Snatchers by Jack Finney - I've seen the movie(s). I like reading older Sci-Fi, so that may be the pull. Thank you. Recommendations: Kate Hope Day's books - (1) If, Then and (2) In the Quick - really good books. Her debut is good, but her second book is near great. A lot like Andy Weir-esque. Very enjoyable reading. I think you'll like it. J.S. Dewes' series called The Divide. She has published her first book, The Last Watch...which is like the Men of the Watch from Game of Thrones, but in space at the edge of the Universe. It is REALLY, really good. It is bleak and soul crushing at moments, but incredibly satisfying. Her sequel in the series is being published at the end of August, 2021 called The Exiled Fleet. It is much anticipated.
Glad I was able to add a few books to your tbr. I recently read and review the Last Watch and thought it was fun. I have If,Then on my library wishlist so I may have to check it out sooner. And yeah I heard the sequel to Spin was super weak
The Invasion of the Body Snatchers book is great! I read it many years ago. I won't get tired of recommending Felix J. Palma's Victorian Trilogy, beginning with The Map of Time. The three books are a homage to HG Wells and his novels.
Had the same problem with the science in "The Three-Body problem". I skipped a lot of pages.lol. Another good book from R.C. Wilson that is " Darwinia". Not a new book but a good story :)
I recently read The Predator: The Hunter and The Hunted by James A. Moore. Yes, that Predator haha. It's not perfect but it's better than most of the movies in the series. It's a genre mash up of sci-fi, action, horror and political thriller. It has a surprising amount of talking about government funding, and it's very gory too. It has A LOT of slasher elements to it too!
Ahh the three body problem that everyone said was great. I don't know if i've ever had a book try so hard to put me to sleep before. I simply do not understand why people say they like this book. Its mind-numbingly boring.
Spin is one of my favourites. RCW I so great at presenting stories of people dealing with the unimaginable. I go back and forth between Spin and Oryx and Crake as the best sci fi novel by a Canadian.
I shamefully still need to read Oryx and Crake
That’s a nice copy of invasion of the body snatchers. I still have to read this book. I’ll have to place it high on my TBR.
Yes I really love the cover
I’m always hesitant to pick up science fiction. Spin sounds so intriguing though. I’m going to give it a whirl 🤣.
It's very accessible!
Please do. I think more people should read that book!
All I can say is that I really enjoyed this video please stay safe and enjoy your reading love your Australia fan John xx
Thanks
@@TheShadesofOrange no worries 😉
'The Freeze Frame Revolution' sounds brilliant.
It was really great 👍
Supernova Era sounds intriguing!
I really enjoyed it

Thanks! Both are definitely worth the read
I always look forward to your sci-fi reads videos! Nice roundup.
Aww thank you! My scifi videos don't get as much love
Freeze frame sounds pretty interesting so going to keep an eye out for that at the book stores and libraries!
I believe it's on scribd or hoopla
I’ve wanted to pick up Spin for years now! So glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Now is the perfect time!
Thanks for another great rec video! Freeze-Frame Revolution & Spin just went on my tbr.
Yay always happy to add more books on your tbr

Thanks for the recs. Embarrassingly I have read of those 3

I love the 90s version of The Body Snatchers and I didn't even know it was based on a book! Will definitely check it out 😃
Definitely check it out!
The more I watch old, science fiction, B movies, the more I love them. I definitely need to read Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The Freeze-Frame Revolution sounds interesting as well.
If you love b scifi movies, you should definitely read Body Snatchers!

I have tried Hyperion years ago and didn't love it. It reminded me too much of The Sparrow which I struggles with

Oh good to know. I don't read a ton of short stories but I'm definitely intrigued by that one.
Thanks for this Sci-Fi book report.

The author's politics isn't so great either, but you know the drill, can you separate the art from the artist, yada, yada, yada.
Oh I didn't know that
I really love books with lots of hard science, but that one was certainly tough at times
Gizmodo reports that The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu Has Become a Serialized Podcast.
That'd be awesome. I think it might be getting a TV show too
Older book you might like - 'Society of the Mind', by Eric L Harry

Woo hoo! High five 🙌
Does anyone know what the red book over Rachel's left should its something from hell
I believe you are referring to Paperbacks from Hell
