    My friends and I were driving from Michigan to Disney World and we stopped for the night somewhere in Tennessee. I parked and got out of the car to check in and I held the door open for a young black man. When I got inside the receptionist at the desk, in a very heavy southern accent, was just like yelling at this poor man saying “Did you let that girl hold the door for you?! What is wrong with you?” I was honestly shocked because living in Michigan my whole life I have never experienced that. I’ve always held the door open for any and everyone because it’s the nice thing to do. I looked between the man and the receptionist and flat out told the woman “I don’t play those games. I am more than capable of holding a door open. I’m not fragile.” She looked at me in silence as I apologized to the man for her behavior. I understand that that type of thing is “the southern way” but I felt awful for the man and it honestly felt insulting to me. Yeah. I don’t like that whole southern gentleman bullshit. I can hold my own door and pay for my own meal. And that doesn’t make the man I’m with less of a man 🤷🏼‍♀️

      I live in the south and people are so sexist almost everyday in school I would not get to play certain “boy games” also when it was raining and we can’t go outside for recess the girls have to be knitting and the boys get to play with hot wheels. I was so used to hearing “girls can’t play soccer” “girls can’t play basketball” that when I went to California and I went to a playground I was so surprised that I could play with the boys. Also girls are taught that they should be nurses or teachers and where dresses and skirts. My dad always said that he was afraid for me to be a teenager and always be on social media. Honestly I am so lucky my dad doesn’t have a son cause if he did he wouldn’t let me do certain “boy things” like wearing jeans or riding a motorcycle. I plan to move from the south as soon as I turn graduate school next year. I also hold the door sometimes and every time I try to some guy comes and holds it because Oh mY gOSh HoLDInG A dOOR iS sO hArD. I was being sarcastic but like they think I can’t do the simplest things. I’m glad you don’t have to live in the south.

    • @thisisme4074
      @thisisme4074 3 года назад +4

      I’m sorry that happened- for both you and the man. Personally, I’ve lived in the south - not the deep south though, thank fuck - for all my life (21 years, so not that long) and have never run into such a problem as this. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a southern gentleman. The only thing that’s wrong is getting angry and berating someone for _not_ being one. Nobody is obligated to pull out your chair for you, but it’s totally fine if you want someone to and if someone _wants_ to, you know? At least, in my opinion.

    • @angelicalicari8355
      @angelicalicari8355 2 года назад

      @@thisisme4074 Absolutely, there's nothing wrong with being a southern gentleman, as long as the man doesn't expect the woman to become meek or subservient or owe him in any way. Like, I can accept the chair you pulled out for me, without owing you another date or a conversation or sex. Being a "southern gentleman" is just a gender-specific form of kindness, and kindness isn't a favor you get to cash in.

    My opinion for the "who should pay" question is: For the first time it should be whoever asked the other out on that date. After that, it should be a 50/50 or a "hey I'll get this one and you get next" type of idea. (Also, I LOVE your guys content!)

      For me it is whoever chose the restaurant. But other than that if that doesn't seem feasible then 50/50 or the actual items ordered. I always go to a date anticipating paying for my meal, or if I chose the place, I go with the amount of money to cover both people.

    • @Aisha_Luv
      @Aisha_Luv 3 года назад +4

      I just think it should be discussed beforehand, and not based on gender. Like maybe you asked somebody out cos you really like them, but are broke. Or if the other person offers to pay.

    • @mollsypops2002
      @mollsypops2002 Год назад

      I think it’s who either asked for the date or chose the place, but how I’ve always done it and what works best for me, is you pay for what you ordered. It’s why I’m not really for 50/50, since it may feel like if they get steak or a burger and you got soup, a salad or pasta, you’re paying more than what you ate is worth 😅

    At my middle school for puberty, they separated us but taught everyone the "same" topics (though they went more in depth on almost everything with the girls). Doing the same topics somehow made it worse, because they still were very serious with the girls, and for the boys, it was just "yea so girls get periods once a month, basically they bleed and get crabby so steer clear of them" so all the boys decided they knew everything about periods, etc and it was very NOT good...
    Edit: As a teenager, I'm very glad to have you guys as role models and thank you so much for talking about this!!

    I live in Utah where they have laws placed that we are an “abstinence only” state and laws are placed for our lessons. I didn’t learn a single thing in my health class. We didn’t learn about birth control, condoms, etc. We were taught to not have sex and that’s it. Since the LDS church makes up most of the population in our state you also can’t ask your parents. Your peers can’t really help you either since everyone is in the same boat. So most kids are left on their own and let’s just say I know many people who have had an STD or an unplanned pregnancy due to lack of knowledge. Hopefully young people can see this video and become more curious to educate themselves. Especially if they live in a state like Utah!

    For our health class week, we were separated for three days then had a full class discussion on the fourth day. The boys would always come back laughing while the girls would be scared for all of these things that they suddenly learned they would have to deal with in the future. And then some of the more idiotic boys made fun of the girls for being scared (if that makes sense.) but the boys didn't understand how harsh our teacher had been when teaching these subjects. Like dudes, the girls just learned something that is honestly kinda scary (if that makes sense.) in a scary way. We were told to sit on the carpet and pay attention, and I'm not lying when I say our teacher threatened to send me to the principals office for hiding in my sweatshirt when I got uncomfortable.

    excellent series - thanks to especially Sam for sharing her experiences. my only complaint is that you both should absolutely stop discounting the male experience just because us ladies have more to fear. Hasn't Ryan spoken about being stalked and abused? honestly a guy should have fear walking home at night he could get mugged!, over here its not illegal for a woman to commit rape and a jail sentence for a woman abusing a man was only given THREE YEARS AGO. it's awful. saying I don't get it I am a man or you don't get it you're a woman is expanding both problems. thanks to you both for this video.
    [anyone else had to deal with sexual comments from reaching puberty in places you are supposed to be exempt from it like school? or even worse where they did nothing? yes I'm still bitter about them doing nothing about the boy who sat behind me in history talking about what he'd do to me in my bed]

My god, we literally saw everything. It was horrifying, bit no one really talks about abstinence.

    We had sex Ed/puberty taught to us in 5th grade. We were split into guys and girls. We were taught about tampons and pads and stuff. We were taught about guys but not much and not well. I legitimately was under the impression for years that girls got periods every month but that guys could get erections at any time as if those were the guy/girl equivalent of each other. We were taught about stds and birth control but not that side effects are things and stuff. I had a doctor miss an important diagnosis and throw me on birth control to “help” and so I was unnecessarily on birth control for a straight seven years and didn’t realize how awful you feel on it until I stopped taking it.

    When I learnt about periods in primary school I remember the teachers made all the girls in the grade stay in for 10 minutes at lunch time (the boys got literally no sex education or education whatsoever) and just said that some girls are getting periods now, if we ever catch you telling a boy about this or even saying the word you will get an immediate detention. They didn't define periods or what to expect. I went to a private Anglican school.

    I loved this video! I am a woman and I loved the things that were talked about. The only thing is that I feel like both men and women have it hard when it comes to societal expectations. Yes, in a lot of situations women are taught to be the “responsible” ones, and simultaneously we are taught that men take priority. But on the other hand, imagine being the man who has been taught to be a “manly man” his whole life and has been brainwashed in to thinking so many unhealthy things. It would be really difficult for a man like that to find who he really is in a society like ours. Not to mention breaking past all the barriers of not showing emotion unless it’s anger and not dressing to “girly”. And for a man who never finds his way out of the sexist things he has been taught, he is going to live a life without true connection to anyone. So yes, I believe a lot of our problems in society involving gender have to do with believing women are less than and “boys will be boys” for generations. But I don’t think that necessarily makes it a whole lot easier for one gender over the other, besides at face value.

    My school doesn't actually have the health teacher tach sex ed, they bring in people from an outside organization. And frankly I'm glad because the health teachers would just make it awkward because they go from talking about fruits and vegetables with middle schoolers one period to sex ed with the high schools the next day 🤦🏾‍♀️ with that being said the way they talk about sex is refreshing because they make us write down the pros and cons of sex, why people have sex, and we learn about certain, common STDS, but they NEVER tell us to NOT have sex. They want you to make sure you're ready, consider the outcome, and to just be safe when you do it.

    see I went to an all girls catholic school so basically sex class was abstinence class. I did not really learn anything about my actual body and the precautions I needed to take to have a healthy, hygienic period. It was mostly like SEX IS BAD/YOU HAVE SEX DAMNATION TO YOU blah blah blah. Thank-you so much for posting this video, this is the content we need then some other content that is being post on youtube!!

    Why aren't men/boys taught about periods and feminine hygiene products in the US? In Aus, everyone learns the biology and how to handle it. The boys all learned about tampons and pads and how to use them, and we all learned the different changes that occur in ourselves and each other in puberty. Knowing about menstruation as a cishet man, i could imagine, would be useful.

      I'm in Australia too. My primary school sex ed class separated us by gender and taught the girls about menstruation, but not the boys. In high school we weren't separated, but they just made us sit in a big circle and put condoms on fake bananas, then test each other with ''Guess the STD' flashcards. So boys missed the period party.

      It's funny how I am from Italy and here nobody ever taught me anything about periods and puberty, neither in school. When I had mine for the first time I didn't even know what it was.

    Whats really funny is this. I once saw a man, sho was laden down with books, struggling to open a door that I was about to walk through. Knowing basic manners, I opened the door and held it open for him. He stood there, waited for me to walk through, told me to shut it and walk away, then struggled wuth the door for a solid 5 min before getting it open. Keep in mind, I am a women, and was 13 at the time.

    Also we didn't get separated by boys and girls in the sex Ed class day. We were all in the room and looked at std pictures, and what conctreceptions worked best and what worked with what.

    for me health class there was a video for the girls and a video for the boys for puberty but then there was a video for both that we all watched together, and i remember that we were all taught together about checking for breast and testicular cancer and how to check which i think is important for both sides to know. Now paying for dinner or whatever, I don't think i was taught one way or another but i personaly feel, if i ask if someone wants to go out to eat or whatever male or female that i should pay, but if someone asks me if i want to go out to eat i atleast feel like i should pay for my half. How i was taught about sex i honestly don't remember, no one really sat me down and told me, I got little things from my parents and things from health class, and i don't really remember being taught about pleasure of sex, it was kinda taught as that's how you make babies and sometimes for fun but mostly for babies, oh and in health class it was taught that it was for married couples but i didn't care about that lol. We were taught also about pretty much every birthcontrol available at that time which i knew about the pill and condoms but i had no idea there was a female condom and other stuff. I have so much more i could talk about but it would go on forever lol. I love these videos do more.

    If you don't like any of these ideas, no worries, it could just be what I like so I COMPLETELY understand. Maybe something VS ideas like: Supernatural Fan v Someone Who Has Never/Barely Watched (or any show/series/movie/etc), Driving Expectations or Education, Starbucks v Dunkin(or Coffee Bean or any other main chains like that), CA v NY, religious upbringings or expectations and how you see/think about them today, Traveling differences between men and women or maybe between singles and groups. These were just some ideas I had, if you use them YAY, if not I know I'll still love what you guys come up with!

    Each of these questions probably deserves it's own 5-part-mini series because it's so important to talk about them openly and end the stigmas around them. Or a podcast. Seriously. A podcast!
    I remember we learned in primary school how babies develop and grow, but I don't remember every properly learning about sex in school at all. Apart from the "oh so puberty is this, and girls, use protection or you will get pregnant, and boys, just try and hold it together" 1 day talk basically, and a sex ed week where we were also separated. Us girls were taught about birth controls, and different types of birth control, and I remember us all sitting in a circle with the task to put on a condom on a banana, because "it was our responsibility to make sure we don't get pregnant so we had to know how to do it". It was basically a week long lesson on "how to not get pregnant" and making sure no one ever thinks that sex could be ... dare I say it... fun.
    Also this whole "the man has to pay" thing...No. Simply just no. For the first date, and maybe the one after that, I feel like the person asking out should at least offer to pay. But even then: if I didn't think the date went well or I know I don't really want to go on another one, I'll happily pay for myself and leave the space with a "clean slate". 😅
    Thanks for being so honest about these topics. It's so important to have this kind of content out there and available for everyone. Keep it up!
