On Dec. 16, Hays, Kansas police raided the hospital room of 69-year-old Greg Bretz, who is suffering from terminal cancer, after a hospital worker at Hays Medical Center caught him vaping marijuana, KSNF reports.

So, let me get this straight. Not only did the cops take away the only thing that was comforting this dying man, but they have also ensured that one of the last things he will experience in life is going to court. Wow. Words cannot express how disappointed I am in America.
This is incredibly cruel It leaves no words for right or wrong It's absolutely wrong for them to do this I had been diagnosed at about 30 years old with a full body neurological condition that was caused by a doctor and they decided to use their white line to protect the doctor from me pursuing a lawsuit against him for permanently damaging all my nerves two weeks later a doctor gave me a diagnosis and the cause of the neurological damage It was from the surgery that the surgeon did that destroyed and made the nerves do something they normally don't This was approximately 20 years ago She told me I'm not supposed to tell you this but a lot of my patients with this problem find that marijuana works quite well to help with the pain as well as the pain medications that I provide to you but as a physician and a neurologist I cannot tell you that you should do this because in the state of Wisconsin it is illegal right there says it all. It is fine to shove feeding tubes into people and all kinds of other things for their care at the end of their life and they call it quality of life We have no quality of life They do not want to prescribe drugs that help with the neurological pain and then you can't use a natural item that causes no harm with those medications like my neurologist said for pain control to have us actually have quality of life quality of life is one of those sentences like let's move forward or moving forward It means nothing It means nothing to our Congress it means nothing to our senators It means nothing to our state representatives Our quality of life as disabled persons in pain do not matter and people who aren't sick your quality of life does not matter one little bit to any of these people They could give two 💩💩 about anyone's quality of life as long as it has no effect on their lives It doesn't matter If suddenly someone they care about has the problem that you have then they want to work to help that process move forward for things to be fixed legally so things can be used pretty funny huh If I told you everything that we've gone through with these idiots in Wisconsin you wouldn't believe me You just wouldn't from having a daughter with siezures at one time mostly 10-20 per day 10-18 min long. And the only thing we could do was call an ambulance they would come pick her up give her adavan & send her back home and we couldn't go back to the hospital again Then the staff at the hospital started saying that they're not going to treat her fake seizures just because it wasn't coming up in the epileptic part of the brain No joke They treated her like 💩💩 She got to the point where she refused to go to get medical help because they didn't give a 💩 during that time I had one of our State Rep come to my home and drop off a Blue book I asked him if he wanted our medication information because the medication we take are worse for us then marijuana would ever be even if we smoked it I gave him the printouts with all of the drug names and the side effects everything for both herself and me mind you were talking 30 to 40 drugs and I waited 3 months I called you got told Oh I haven't had the time to look at them yet 6 months after I spoke with him the first time I called he told me he never ever said that he would look into it and that he is totally against even medical until the federal government legalizes it now mind you I'm still trying to get a new dog for her because some sick twisted child poisoned our service dog that we trained ourselves she was a dog that knew search and rescue cadaver hold kill and she would give me 10 to 15 minute warnings on her seizures lay behind her and keep her from aspirating as well as when we went to the store she would come with her and if she could not find me she would come get me because of my daughter's vision is terrible and it is gone from terrible to worse now having retinal dystrophy as well as ocular migraines. I called the place that you would try to get a dog from for vision They told us we would have to get rid of every animal in our house before she could apply I am not going to displace our families two dogs her cat my son's cat and the three parrots we rescued All of these animals are rescued animals mind you. Because they do a crappy job of training their dogs. Her other service dog we had to get rid of no animals whatsoever She did her job without Phil every time so if they train them that poorly maybe they should not be training them at all for service That is a pathetic way of reasoning to displace other animals because they don't know what they're doing. They want dogs to turn into robots that don't even seem to enjoy being pet and scratched behind the ears That's not a dog or a dog any pack When you have a dog that's in your family's pack they are more willing to do the job that you ask about. We will have to make changes to our house and we've got a GoFundMe up but unless I basically take money I don't have and stick it into advertise it on Facebook She's going to get nothing She's sitting at nothing now and we won't even come close to being able to purchase a puppy for myself to train as we have trained her first dog and it discussed me There's no help out there for her and I've just had enough for her pain for her headaches that have been migraines since middle school she takes maxalt with very little relief the combination of the gummies as well as her maxalt help more. pain from neurologic issues same thing gummies but you know the doctors don't like that My pain management doctor said they can't tell the difference between Delta 8 and THC from marijuana I offered to bring the receipt and the packaging notice that it was not marijuana as well as the milligrams everything that we received in the shipping label He did not want to see any of it It was like nope don't care don't care if it helps You're stuck with these pills and we're not going to do anything about the breakthrough pain that you're having. I'm not that idiotic that he doesn't know that a gas chromatograph could tell him it's not worth the argument So much for this being a democracy of freedom and I don't mean owning guns blah blah blah I mean making our own health decisions with our doctors but deciding what we want to do rather than you've got to do this or we won't give you your pain medication and that's exactly how it is now 30 years old and told by neurologist that the medications she gives me plus marijuana work very well for her other patients but she cannot tell me to use it says it all. If anyone wants to know her go fund me just message me on here I would appreciate it if you could share it because we don't use Facebook it's toxic and I'm sick of it We don't use Twitter either because that's another long story we have a destroyed roof no solar panels and no solar because his company sent non-elect stenced electricians to our house to put in the solar and they were kicked off the property by the building inspector I won against their company in Utah because that's where They have their business address and headquarters in they're better business bureau rating at the highest rating you could be makes no sense because I was told I won my case against them I had proven what they did was their fault and they should repair everything and finish the contract but Utah does not enforce that So who's got enough money to go after Elon Musk after his company destroyed their house. And I have tweeted to him in direct message and like the little coward he did after about the fifth message I couldn't message him anymore and even what's more funny is in his tweets I put out there what a garbage human being he is along with pictures of what they did to it and I have audio files that I recorded from his company swearing to me that they were going to make this right but yet again who is going to help me do it No one all because my daughter wanted to cause less of an impact on nature she is the one who wanted it. She is different from normal kids and it is probably C.T.E. Like football players and boxer's get from repetitive concussion. She hopes to see the solar on our house and her new service 🐕🦺 before she goes blind. But I won't bother to hold my breath anymore. Sorry for the rant I'm just tired of people like #45 getting donations for his plain and we can't get a go fund me to raise anything for her the puppy will cost between $2,000 to $4,000 Then obviously the gear for it to be an eye dog as well as a service dog as they grow out of them and they are not inexpensive items as well as the training that has to be done then modifications to the house and everything else It's just unbearable as a mother to beg people for help and feel like I am a failure because I can't provide it for her. Classic Police for Profit model with arrest quotas. They criminally charge and try EVERYONE that they handcuff, doesn't matter if its a cancer patient puffing harmless weed, they'll still drag it out in court because most people take the plea and pay probation fines forever. If they arrested an infant child, they would still see the charges through and even put the infant in jail. They don't care, the cops have ticket and arrest quotas to fill if they wanna keep their jobs, and the prison as well as probation are both privatized companies profitting from everyone caught in the system.
Thats why there isn't any humanity to be found, because its not a justice system, its a business model. It doesn't even matter if you did anything wrong or not. You could be a 99 year old man and die on the way to jail and they'll put your corpse on trial. They'd even charge an infant with a crime just to keep reaping that revenue. Its how Kansas keeps its infrastructure intact while still being able to give tax cuts to big businesses and make a killing off bribe money. Tennessee's urban cities like Murfreesboro had a similar business model, automated traffic cams that ticket you for running the red light, even if its 2am and you're the only car there. The mere accusation of shoplifting is punished by '2 years' probation, but up until the class action against PCC, probation was a life sentence due to them extending the sentence for 'unpaid fees', and it was considered a jail worthy violation of probation if they caught you in possession of anything of value. And violation of 'failure to pay' probation resulted in felony charges. No joke.
Looks like Kansas has the same police for profit model going on. Its what happens when justice is privatized, thats when cops have quotas, prisons profit off of caging people as long as possible, and when you start seeing terminally ill cancer patients being dragged out of hospital beds and beaten within an inch of their fading lives for a weed vape, and even criminally charged as though he was an international terrorist or something.. He wouldn't even be able to enjoy visits from his loved ones. Additionally, marijuana isn't only used for pain. It was made legal in my state fairly recent for use in people w/certain seizure disorders to control and/or reduce seizures.
EDIT: I saw your other comment. Vaping is not like smoking. It doesn't put any toxins or fumes or smoke in the air. It's water vapor that comes out and almost instantly evaporates. There's not even a scent left behind. If you had your back to someone who was vaping, you wouldn't even know

The fact of the matter is that the War on Drugs must entirely be dismantled immediately, its personnel forced into retirement + investigated by international agencies for its participation in crimes against humanity, overseen by an international truth and reconciliation committee for a generation like what was needed after the Lebanon Civil War, or other genocidal atrocities, & all surviving victims of imprisonment be fully pardoned and compensated for their lost lives and loved ones.

It was probably another patient that complained. Either way, if one worker doesn't report something they're supposed to, another worker could report them for looking the other way and they could get fired or worse. We live in a panopticon where we all enforce our own and each other's good behavior in case someone is watching.
I've had 20+ yrs of hospital based experience as an RN. What a deplorable thing to do. Any employee could have told him he couldn't smoke in his room, and that would've been the end of it. This is an absolute travesty, and as far as I'm concerned it's an embarrassment to the hospital.
In Missouri, Mercy hospitals don't acknowledge Medical Marijuana as a legal treatment, based on religious rights. All it takes is one zealot calling the local inquisition, and you have a lawsuit against a dying man while these religious ideologues giggle together at the weekly meeting.

@Kitten in the Moon Vapes don't produce actual smoke. It's like water condensation gets blown out and it disappears in a second or two. There's no odor, either. If you had a blindfold on and someone was vaping right next to you, you wouldn't know. It sounds like she would have reported him even if he'd just been eating marijuana edibles. She called the police. It's not like she told her supervisor, attending or an administrator. She's bad. The police arresting and charging him is even worse. I hope the prosecutor has enough sense to toss it out.

Next to the fact that we have a fraction of the gun deaths that the US has, what I am most proud of in our country is that we also have sane Marijuana laws. I, like many of my neighbors, grow four plants in our yard every year. This has allowed me to stop paying for and using pharmaceuticals like pain killers. I save money, it works better than the pain killers, it doesn't have any of the nasty side-effects of the pain killers, it's not addictive, and I sleep better at night, knowing that my needs are not funding any evil entities (pharmaceutical or tobacco corporations).
If I was terminally ill, I can't even imagine how angry I would be if the government tried to impose this kind of insanity on me. The family should sue for millions.

Someone who was afraid of having their life, and the financial security of their family put in jeopardy by turning a blind eye. It was probably another patient who complained, whether they knew it was cannabis or not and the staff had to take it. Even if it was a nicotine vape they'd risk losing their job if they didn't properly document it. Hospital staff will flip their shit if you try to sneak in an antacid, cause they're liable for anything that happens to a patient while they're in their care.

The doctor cut off her medication the night before she was released. She was in withdrawals. I went home, got the medication. Gave her the medication. The nurses lost their collective minds. Too bad! I was glad that I had enough pills to wean Mom off the drug by giving her less until she no longer needed it. By the way, the back operation was a complete success! The neurosurgeon did a perfect job but he obviously didn’t have a clue about how to deal with prescription addiction.
Time to legalize marijuana at the federal level

I'm a cancer survivor. This poor man does NOT deserve this. I am very happy to have my daily RSO. I was prescribed narcotics but used cannabis instead. I feel for this guy.

This is absolutely disgusting! I'm a 61 year old man and I suffer from severe neuropathy from my knees down which is a constant excruciating pain. To relieve that pain I am on quite a few pain medications that absolutely make me severely nauseous most of the time. If I didn't smoke marijuana to relieve my nausea and give me an appetite I would never eat! Don't these pieces of crap cops and that moron nurse have anything better to do than harass a dying man!? What the hell is going on in this country!

15 years ago I was TOLD by a boss to not mention that a client was using. I literally used to fill the pipe. It helped with muscle spasms. Now I can tell you that for my arthritis it is the best thing going.
Cruelty is always the point it seems... could've just taken it and left him alone. Hell fine him if you want to even.. But dragging him out of the hospital to go to court is a bit much.. Let him have the time he has left with his family instead of making a mockery of our justice system by torturing this poor guy.. They should feel ashamed.

I am a retired nurse. I was told by an oncology nurse that cancer care is all about pain control. We have all had pain. Maybe you sprain your ankle. The muscles of the foot and ankle are inflamed and stretched. You can not walk on your foot. You take 600 to 800 MG's of advil and within 60 minutes your pain is greatly reduced or completely gone. You take advil every 4-6 hours over a period of days and the pain disappears and you make a full recovery. That pain does not compare to the chronic, long term, pain of terminal cancer. That type of pain affects a person physically and mentally. As a nurse, the most satisfying thing is being able to relieve a patients pain. The staffer who reported him needs to be fired. He or she has NO COMPASSION.

A spark will not cause oxygen to explode unless it is an enclosed space. If it was true., that any spark could cause an explosion because of the presence of oxygen, fire could never be used. We would still be living in caves and eating raw meat. Hospital security could have confiscated the vape stick. There was no reason to call the police.

She told him that if it helped go for it. It was not legal at the time for medicinal purposes. Good for the Dr who told the gentleman to do whatever made him comfortable. Stories like this totally disgust me! Since I moved to the state with medical cannabis I've eliminated almost all of my prescription drugs! I haven't been in a hospital since my state went legal! And the people of those states still have to suffer without it! That's where the crime is!
