  • June 19 on The Story: First thing in September, Oregon's experiment with decriminalization of simple drug possession comes to an end. In its place, counties have the option of forming their own "deflection programs" - essentially a way to help drug users avoid jail time and prosecution and instead get connected to services and treatment. But according to Nathan Vasquez, the next Multnomah County district attorney, he's been kept out of the loop on the county's process. And as the first few details about the county's plan come out, he's anxious that it won't include any more accountability than Measure 110 did, letting drug users skate without making any effort to seek treatment as long as they check in at a county drop-off center.
