What is the Performing Arts Academy (PAA)?
The Performing Arts Academy, or PAA, is a unique program within our school that combines traditional College Prep classes with an artistic twist. Students take core subjects like English, History, and Science, but our dedicated teachers enhance the learning experience by integrating the arts into various assignments.
Each year, approximately 10% of students are accepted into the PAA starting in their sophomore year. For incoming freshmen or those looking to transfer to Modesto High, we offer a Pre-PAA program to help you get started.
In the PAA, students attend classes with specialized teachers and have the opportunity to choose one elective each year that focuses on a specific aspect of the performing arts. Electives include technical theatre, music, dance, and computer graphic design-all of which fulfill the general A-G high school graduation requirements.
A common misconception is that the PAA is only for students deeply involved in performing arts. In reality, many of us are just typical high school students who appreciate the chance to learn alongside a consistent group of peers, guided by exceptional teachers. Being part of the PAA means I can easily reach out to classmates for help with homework since we share the same assignments and instructors.
I recently joined the PAA, and it's been an incredible experience! Familiar faces from previous classes make it easier to connect and communicate with my peers. Building friendships is one of the most important aspects of the PAA, and you might even find friends from different grade levels.
For freshmen, Mr. Cover and some current PAA students will visit your English class right after Winter Break to help you sign up for your sophomore year before the balloting process begins. If you're a sophomore, there are still openings in our Academy classes, and you can join in your junior year.
