    when i was 13, it wasn't easy for my father and i to find common ground on which we could bond over. this particular game however, for whatever reason, kept my dads attention and it led to seemingly endless hours that we spent together as he watched me play in the evenings after he got home from work. he never wanted to play, just watch and talk about the story and whatnot. it was an experience i still reminisce over to this day. needless to say, the nostalgia is real and i will always love this game more than my father.

    For people who haven't played Shenmue before, my before you buy advice would be that don't expect an action game. Yes there will be fighting, quicktime events and stuff like that more and more as the story progresses. But especially the beginning of the game is pretty slow paced exploration. You ask people for clues and at times there's moments when you actually have to wait until some bars open etc... That might frustrate some players who just want to progress with the story. But Shenmue is not just an open world adventure game, but it's also a real life simulator too in a way. Especially part 1. When a bar is closed you might want to go play some arcade games while you wait for it to open, or buy some food for your pet kitten. You can also practice your martial arts skills while you wait or expand your capsule toy collection or go to the fortune teller or do what ever you come up with. This makes the game feel like real life, but it's also something that might irritate some people. In Shenmue 2 you can skip all the waiting. They made some good improvements for Shenmue 2. All in all these are great games and you really want to see how the story progresses once you've been sucked into the game. But it starts slowly and that might turn some people off. Shenmue is a very unique experiece. First of all there's not many games that happen in the eighties, so that's interesting in itself. This is in many ways a relaxing game with a great atmosphere, fun characters, interesting story and unforgettable music. The city that you explore feels real because there's so much to do and because of the weather changes and because all npc characters have different answers to your questions and all the characters live their own life. They go to work and later they might go hang out at bars and stuff like that. This was a super ambitious game for it's time and even today many things about these games still impress me. So if you like atmospheric adventure games or if your curious to see what the first open world game was like, you should definitely check this out. Especially if you're interested in asian culture and martial arts, this is the perfect game for you.

    I didn't realize how grand and detailed Shenmue was until the next big open world game came out... which was GTA 3... now don't get me wrong I loved GTA 3, and despite being revolutionary for it's time, it felt empty.... in Shenmue you can open every drawer in your house! Shenmue's world just felt.... alive.... I know they're two different games and two different genres, but Shenmue really spoiled me because I expected every open world game going forward to be as detailed as it was.

    • @josh-rz3uq
      @josh-rz3uq 5 лет назад +12

      You can open every drawer in the Hazuki residence if you wish but, with maybe 2 exceptions (one of them being the discovery of a crucial item) there is no reason to. It's all window dressing.

    • @THEGREATMAX
      @THEGREATMAX 5 лет назад +37

      But it's window dressing that is appreciated for the sake of realism. It's the first thing most games would cut these days so they could add more bloom lighting and other BS
      Other things you can do in Shenmue that other games don't do: Talk to every single person on the street who *actually all have voices*
      Pick up/buy almost everything at the local supermarket
      Enter raffles at the local supermarket to win your own video games to play at home
      Collect cassette tapes of music that you can listen to on your walkman
      Get allowance from your grandma
      Actually *lose* quick time events and having that change the story (altho some you need to retry bc they're actually life threatening)
      Get a job and actually feel some tiny sense of community with the people you work with

    • @josh-rz3uq
      @josh-rz3uq 5 лет назад +3

      And virtually none of those NPCs have anything of value to say. Almost all of the things you buy at the supermarket have no actual use. To listen to the tapes on the cassette player, you actually HAVE TO STOP PLAYING THE GAME. If I wanted to listen to music, I'd listen to music, and much better music than the fucking muzak that's on those tapes. Every QTE with a single exception is repeatable.

    • @THEGREATMAX
      @THEGREATMAX 5 лет назад +5

      1. Because that's realistic. 2. Bc realistic 3. Could be fixed in newer releases. Phantom Pain did it.
      4. No they aren't unless you completely reset the game. Although the first game had more of them, but that's bc 2's story was starting to pick up and become more serious

    • @josh-rz3uq
      @josh-rz3uq 5 лет назад +2

      The only people who are obsessed with realism in video games are shut-ins who don't get to experience it any other way. Shenmue is an odd example to use as an example of realism in video games anyway, as it isn't realistic in the slightest. People don't talk like that. Teenagers can't beat up 70 gangsters by themselves. Old mirrors don't have mystical powers. Creatures like Chai, whatever the fuck he is, don't exist.

    • @JadeFalcon07
      @JadeFalcon07 5 лет назад +9

      This is actually fairly common these days. Oblivion used a simpler form and even attempted giving NPCs personal goals, some shenanigans tended to follow. Several others like Breath of the Wild have characters respond to the environment and day / night cycles all the time. Stardew Valley is nearly as detailed as Shenmue in the daily routines of its NPCs even adding additional details depending on season and weather. Shenmue was groundbreaking for its time and should be acknowledged for it, but it has since been surpassed as the tech has improved.

But hand on heart I can honestly say that I've never loved any console more than my Dreamcast. I adored everything about it, especially the funky memory cards. And to this day it still has my favourite catalogue of games like Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5, Vituar Tennis, Shenmue 1 and 2 although 2 was only in Japanese. You had to have the Xbox version to play Shenmue 2 in English. Which I had as well.
      I love the Dreamcast forever!!

  • @jeremycards
    @jeremycards 5 лет назад +21

    To give you guys who never played this some perspective on why it was so mindblowing to us who played it back in the day. Consider this... it was released in the year 2000, the PS2 wasn't out yet, the most advanced games we got at the time were Majora's Mask or the first Metal Gear Solid. This... was mindblowing back then, the fact that the npcs had daily routines, the amount of detail everywhere was just something that wasn't even considered before. Nowadays its common fare, but Shenmue really was a key piece of videogame history, it did a LOT to push videogames foward and make world's more believable and im so glad i can finally play it again. If you never played it and feel you can get into it with the right mindset and pacience, give it a go!

    As someone who has no nostalgia for Shenmue and fell in love with it recently, I’d recommend it to people who enjoy slow, relaxing games and want to lose themselves in the world.
    Don’t listen to people; it’s nothing like Yakuza (apart from some mini games). It’s probably more suited to people who enjoy games like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley or Persona. It’s honestly a life sim of sorts with an adventure story. If you go into it with that expectation, I’m sure you’d enjoy it more.

      @ChristopherGibbsBKK 5 лет назад +6

      @@silentchef1874 It's a very different game with some similarities. The creator of the Yakuza series was part of the Shenmue team. Shenmue is a slow-paced adventure game, with relaxing gameplay and an incredibly detailed world where every NPC has a schedule and a back-story, even if you have no way of knowing it - for example one NPC you have no reason to ever speak to walks around every day in a suit with a suitcase, because he's been fired from his job and hasn't told his family yet. There are plenty of little mini-games a few QTEs, and a handful of Virtua Fighter III-style fight scenes, but it you expect Yakuza-style action, you are going in with entirely the wrong expectations. I was quite late to the party with Shenmue, as I only bought a Dreamcast about 4 years ago, but I was blown away then and devoured both games in a month, and I'm playing through them again now and they are still among the most impressive games I've ever played.

    It kind of reminds me of how yakuza 3, 4 and 5 are “remastered” for the PS4, the games aren’t totally remade like kiwami and kiwami 2, but it’s still very nice to see the older models slightly touched up to HD. Really considering getting this, Ive heard a lot of great things regarding this franchise!

    If you really look, most current open world games have still not caught up with Shenmue. Though they have their place, most or all of them are very lifeless and just huge for huge sake. The Shenmue world is very dense. Dobuita still feels alive, every NPC has a different personality and purpose in the game world. At any point in the game, just about every NPC has multiple dialog lines appropriate to where you are in the game. Imagine how long that probably took. You can go into just about any building, and it feels very lived in and real. There ARE some dodgy things you have to endure like the pacing and V.O.but check it out if you get the chance. If not just run around dobuita and marvel at all the detail...and then compare it to other games from that generation or even modern open world games. It's oozing with personality, charm, and MYSTERY...which most games lack.

    I got the original Shenmue for Dreamcast on release day - Even seeing footage of it takes me back to how I felt, playing it for the first time. I never got to play II, so I can't wait to get these and go through them again!
    Even though the gameplay may feel "dated" compared to more modern games, I think there's still going to be a lot of appeal. Especially with episodic adventure games like "Life is Strange" being so popular, I'm sure there is a whole new audience of gamers that wasn't around then to enjoy the story and experience.

I remember years ago I saw the first game in a magazine and I wanted it so badly, but, alas... even then I was tied to a PC. When the third game appeared I was going to emulate the older games and as I was looking into that, the HD remaster was announced. But especially part one forced me to kill time because i had to wait a few hours ingame, or a day. I actually greatly appreciated that. It's still a really immersive experience. You can talk to every NPC in the game, which makes the world very rich.
    the only thing that, in my opinion, didnt age well are parts of the controls, especially the camera. The graphics are of its time, but i think to a degree they still hold up. If you don't like the graphics, there's already modders sharpening up stuff.

      That persistent world created in Shenmue with npcs going about their business still hasn't been beaten with all of today's processing power and memory. You could follow people and see them go to cafes, bars, sometimes back to their house. Businesses shutting up shop at the end of the day. I still have not seen a game pull this intricacy off today. Npc's in GTA for example just wonder aimlessly or walk endlessly to no where. I hope this sells well so it will encourage Sega someday to make a visual updated version like SOTC.

      Yea I hear you, it's really not a part of game design that seems to have been worked on much, barring a few exceptions. I'm interested to see if Red Dead Redemption 2 does anything with it now, but I get the feeling it's gonna be more of the same, people that disappear when you stop looking, or literally spend their entire existence playing poker or selling guns behind the shop counter. RDR seems like the kinda game that could really benefit from those added details... and it seems like the game IS adding a LOT of details... but I still think it's gonna be lacking in this regard, which would be a little disappointing.

    I've been waiting for these games to be released on new consoles because I have been wanting to play them forever so I'll definitely be picking this one up at some point.

    As someone who didn't grow up with the Dreamcast or Shenmue, the remastered version was a very unique experience to me. I can't really put into words why I enjoyed the game just that I felt very engaged and immersed in it. My only issues are with some of the bugs. I've had audio cut out and my game even crashed on me once.

    I love this game. Just bought the bundle with 1 & 2. I bought for nostalgia, but I can't wait to play #3 when I finish my playthrough of the first 2 games.

    Omg I used to collect those capsule toys in Shenmu 2. Good times! It really was ahead of it's time
    Also it was really cool to connect with every character in the game. Really made the world feel real. It was like a good book

      rafresenden rafresenden. I mean graphically not so much. Although SNES still look good to this day. And people still play old games like ALTTP, SM64, MGS 1, SF 2, etc.

    I remember when my mom bought me a Dreamcast for Christmas, this game caused a great impact on me it felt like it was huge with no limits whatsoever, 17 years went by and I'm not a kid anymore however the nostalgia is too strong and I will be downloading this tonight. Greetings from Costa Rica
