Ive done this job on three different trucks. My tip is take a very close look at the provided screws. Every time, they have been a different thread. I learned the hard way on the 1st one and it cracked the base of the distributor. Now, I just re-use the old screws every time.
My truck would not start. When it cranked, it acted like the 350 was out of time. I remembered limping it in 10 years ago and having the same symptom. After way too much time dealing with the back torx screw, I finally removed it. The cap was badly corroded. The replacement cap had metal screws instead of the machine screws. I used one of those new screws in the front and reused the old good machine screw in the back. The truck started right up and runs great. Thanks for the reminder video!
I just did this thanks to their video. I was laying on the engine from the front. And getting that back screw is all be feel only. A massive pain. Makes me wish for the old days when I had straight six cars with EVERYTHING right there. You could do a full tune up in a half hour.
Thanks for the video. I am having problems with my truck sputtering when I accelerate. I know need to change my cap and rotor and wires since I changed my plugs already. I pray it fixes my problem
Im having the same problems as that guys and i just ordered ac delco cap and rotor, when i remover the cap there was very bad/corrosion i also have a random misfire code p0300
These flat cap distributors are famous for misfire issues. Here is a YT video of a mechanic putting current to one terminal showing how spark can jump to another terminal. I have a boat powered by a GM 350 Vortec and have had numerous issues with these caps, i found a boater chat blog and many guys with boats powered with a GM using that cap, all having same problem. It is a BAD design so even buying a new cap & rotor is like rolling the dice it might work or be bad right out of the box. GM does not make the Vortec engine anymore so it appears they have no interest in fixing the problem their engineers created when they re-design the traditional style cap. Here is that video and worth the watch for all people dealing with this issue. ruclips.net/video/ltsr1qPiTzI/видео.html
If the rotor isn't clocked right you will have misfires and possibly further issues with starting the vehicle. To align the rotor if you forget, the engine needs to be at top dead center. There are some good youtube videos showing how to do this.
Though for sure this was going to fix my issue. My distributor cap was cracked and only held on by one screw. Bought this, easy swap, but still not starting. Back to the drawing board. Thinking Crankshaft sensor now.
Do all of GM cars have distributor cap and rotor? For example 2001 Saturn SL2 or 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier, do they have those parts? Thank you for the great film.
What should I do because the rotor screws came loose somehow on mine. I don't know where to put the rotor when I screw it back on I got it once by change but my truck broke down on me again I think it is the rotor coming loose 2 times now
I bought a Cadillac Escalade 1999 with a 5.7. The truck has no Cadillac converters straight pipe but passenger side manifold when you run it turn cherry red it gets real hot and have no power any suggestions plus read code 1345
It may be a different procedure on your application. We currently do not have an auto repair video for this particular year, make and model. Thank you for asking. 1aauto.com
good video. question for others is: weren't you amazed at the 'tightness'' of area to get back screw off with torx 20. ? now weren't you pissed this damn general motors used a t-15, and a t-20 for what shoulda been a single screwdriver? either a or b ? still angry at the cheap effort to make me buy, rent 2 wrenches !! pisses me off. But this host here is fair presenter and has clear voice.
Yes, it does appear the distributor cap & rotor are different for a V6 and a V8 in regards to the vehicle shown in the video. Thank you! +Alix Desjarlais
+Kooley_ Hoe We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
+Em Lawson The part in this video fits your application, and the install should be the same or similar. Buy this part on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Worst tune up I've ever done. I'm 6 ft tall and I had to lay a blanket of the motor so I could crawl up in the engine bay to get the distributor and rotor off and back on. Not so easy for a 43 year old man who has back problems.😂 I wish I was 25 again.
I know this is late, but why can't they make screws that have the little keepers on them, like they used to? Obviously, they have never performed this task. I would also advise anyone doing this job to be a little more gentle, because alot of these past are cheap plastic. Also, dielectric grease is your friend here on the plug wires, NOT inside the cap and rotor!!!

Thank you so much for this tutorial
The hardest part about this was being 4'11 and having to sit on my engine to access the area. :)
I agree...bad engineering. I refusw to ever buy GM products...for me...HYUNDAI

I rather sit on my engine since i have a k1500 and comes with a 2 inch factory lift
3 years ago, i know. But i have to say, im 6' and still have to sit inside the engine bay lol
I’m 6ft and I pretty much lay down across the engine bay
Do y’all recommend putting dielectric grease on the metal components before install to reduce corrosion over time?
That’s what i would have done.
I love the 1A Auto video! Thanks guys for the details… I think I’ve watch all the videos to this vortex 5.7l
One thing I noticed is your new parts have brass terminals that's a plus brass is a better conductor plus it don't corrode as much! Great video!

check for distributer bushings worn out. I've had that problem

It was 2 years ago, but I'm currently having these same issues. It's my fuel injectors though. The whole truck needs a tune up but damn
Perfekt Video 👌👍greetings from Austria 🙋🏼♂️
Those torx screws on the cap are also t15 on my 5.0 305
Same
Very professional, helpfull and easy to understand👍👍👍 como siempre
Thank you for the feedback! +Mr.Black Mountain
Great video explained perfectly .
+Robert Novotny Thanks for the feedback!

Can you link to a video explaining this please
Thanks! I hope my 1999 7.4 takes T15 and T20. Plus my coil is rite above the cap, it really hard to get into the cap
Do you have the old style HEI?
Question: is disconnecting the battery not necessary prior to remove & replace cap & rotor?
What happens id you forget which way the rotor was???
you guys are the best

Is this the same process when dealing with the 4.3?
Great video! Thanks!

what about the dielectric grease on cap metal contact prongs?
What are the symptoms that warrant this replacement?
Decreasing gas mileage. Mine was running rough and I finally threw a cylinder misfire code.
How often should u replace cap n rotor?
What should I do because the rotor screws came loose somehow on mine. I don't know where to put the rotor when I screw it back on I got it once by change but my truck broke down on me again I think it is the rotor coming loose 2 times now
Can you put a rotor on the wrong way and cause your cmp offset to be off?
I bought a Cadillac Escalade 1999 with a 5.7. The truck has no Cadillac converters straight pipe but passenger side manifold when you run it turn cherry red it gets real hot and have no power any suggestions plus read code 1345
@1AAuto Is this the same process on a 95 k1500 v6 4.3l? Except for the wiring and wire placement.
It may be a different procedure on your application. We currently do not have an auto repair video for this particular year, make and model. Thank you for asking. 1aauto.com
mrwashur1991 pretty much aswell as 2 less cylinders
Dielectric grease on all contact points 👉
Thank you guys saved my truck!🛻
Thank you!
Nice job!!

Do is necessary to keep the old wires or change them all
+catherine golden Hello! Usually the wires are low cost enough that you would want to just replace them while you are there. Thanks! 1AAuto.com
Is there difference with a v6 vortec distributor rotor and a V8 vortec distributor rotor?
Yes, it does appear the distributor cap & rotor are different for a V6 and a V8 in regards to the vehicle shown in the video. Thank you! +Alix Desjarlais
What happens if you installs the rotor 180 degrees off??
Thanks.....
Hey my suburban starts when it’s cold outside, but when it’s hot, it won’t start at all. I need help before I spend more money (it’s a 98 1500)

I have the same problem with my 98 5.7 Silverado! Did you ever fix the problem? What was it if so?
Was it a fuel issue?
Would this be the same on a 96 c1500?
+Em Lawson The part in this video fits your application, and the install should be the same or similar. Buy this part on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
What happens if it gets put 180 out

I need it for my 1996 Chevy suburban
Thumb screw breaks. Great.

Could correct a P0300 code
Found this video too late 😢😢😢 now my truck wont turn on
Bro mine had a hole all the way through it and was still running
forgot to merntion yiu have to lay on top of the engine to even get to it, it almost as bad as the EGR tube
+Rich Odd Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
Me confused how they don’t have a thick harness bolted over their cap 👁👄👁
Fluorescent paint markers...you'll thank me later.
why would you remove shaft to replace rotor and cap
What happens if u install 180 out
