  • Asia has an insatiable appetite for Australian abalone. Despite the demand, the development of an Australian industry has been hampered by the limited numbers of the wild edible sea snails and the high cost of setting up abalone farms. But a former ab' diver in Western Australia has worked to change this. His solution has been to breed the marine molluscs on land and then transfer them to grow in their natural environment at sea. It's a breathtakingly simple concept, but the Ocean Grown Abalone sea ranch is a world-first.

I cannot see a downside. A sustainable industry both economic and environmentally. A great community resource. Whilst abitats are aimed at abalone. The local fish and seaweed population look to have moved in and are enjoying it too. I went fishing in the Marlborough Sounds in NZ, rule was do not mess with the mussel beds, fair call, but fish around them all you want, for any number of fish that use the protection of the beds. This must be a true bonus for amateur fisherman, locals and visitors alike. Well done...

This is great as these structures actually helps sea life.
The only thing I was thinking is what if someone comes at night and takes them?
