My son Ben and his group of 4 went the same way you went, not wanting to do the long alternate route. They completed Muir Pass last Monday (June 16). They didn't go into Bishop twice as you lamented doing and it all worked out well for them. They didn't have any issues with the San Joaquin bridge outage water crossing(s), but he may have been sugarcoating it for me in his Garmin text so I wouldn't worry, haha.
