It was a political stunt. At that time players were kneeling and the Colts coach and owner supported the players. Pence knew but he went along just to do that political stunt. In reality he protested the 1st amendment.

Odd that Trump and Pence are trying so hard to make the NFL protests about the flag and patriotism. In the pix and vids of Pence at this Colts game you can see Major General Courtney P. Carr standing to Pence's right during the Anthem. You know I've looked and I can find nothing confirming that this military leader, now Commandant of the Indiana National Guard, walked out of the game with Pence over the "disrespect" of the flag. Apparently this General disagreed with Pence and stayed to enjoy the game. P.S. Pence makes a perfect lap dog.
