Tommy never finding a way to at least let his brother know he's safe and in a community that's doing well makes me so sad. I didn't play the game, but just as a show watcher in Joel's place I'd feel so hurt. I mean he had a panick attack when it was inferred that his brother is probably dead.
Fantastic episode. Pascal and Ramsey crushed this. But I can't help but just focus love on the adorable and hilarious Native couple. I want a special just following them.
Two observations about last episode: - It never came to me that Joel gets wounded right after he starts to get soft with Ellie. Even if Joel is a protector, he never protected anyone actually "weak" after losing Sarah. Tess and Tommy were capable fighters, they didn't need Joel the same way Sarah (and even Ellie) needed him. I might add that there's a difference between protecting and looking after someone you care, as the latter involves trust. - When Joel mentioned his dream about having a ranch and raising sheep, it reminded me that Ellie and Dina had a ranch with sheep after they came back to Jackson and Dina had her baby. If they make a season 2, Joel's dream would become true through Ellie.
Yup, after Sarah, Joel would never want to put himself in a situation to potentially fail at protecting someone again. Makes sense that Tess is the main driver and motivator of protecting Ellie and then making Joel promise to continue on after her death
How do you manage to get these out so fast?! I just finished watching it myself, and your take is almost EXACTLY what mine was. Keep up the awesome work, Ryan. You're killing it,,, metaphorically
A couple of items - 1) The 80's song at the end was also the danger code at the end of the 1st episode so foreshadowing Ellie & trouble with Joel 2) Graham Greene and the actress who plays his wife (forgot her name) in the episode were in Northern Exposure together. Her character was a similar wiseguy with deadpan delivery in that show.
Not only is the remake of "Never Let Me Down Again" supposed to establish how we're about to switch the perspective from Joel to Ellie in the storyline, but it's also sung by Craig Maizin's daughter Jessica.
I’m impressed by how the show continues to get better each week and how all the small changes from the game seem to have made the storyline and connections deeper.
Huge shout-out to the amazing Elaine Miles (Florence), who played Marilyn on Northern Exposure. It was so great to see her on screen again! Her smile makes me happy.
Hey screencrush, at around 21:17 the screen goes black and we see the words “Lee’s part.” Was that a placeholder for something you wanted to put in the video or a reference to the game? Or to anything in particular? I didn’t get it. Thanks.
You missed shouting out the amazing Elaine Miles, who played Marlyn Whirlwind in Northern Exposure!!! Loved that show and loved Elaine's quiet portrayal in this ep and in Northern Exposure.
15:39 Ellie isn’t “playing” with the menstrual cup, she’s following along with the instructions. You have to fold it twice, in the exact way she does, before inserting it.
Ellie trying to whistle is also a big reference to the game, you missed that detail Also, the jacket Joel wears in this episode reminds me a lot of the one he wears in Part 2
I have to say this was my favorite episode so far. Phenomenal acting all around! And I have to admit, I got a little teary at the moment where Joel encountered the girl that looked like Sarah from the back. Combined with the Last of Us theme, and Joel's desperation to see his daughter again, it was the feels all around.
23:45, you said that you think Joel relives a memory with Sarah of there last Christmas. But it shows the watch the Sarah gives him on the night of her death. I think instead of it being a flashback, it's Joel thinking of what could have been if the outbreak didn't happen or possibly if Sarah didn't die
I thought Nick Offerman's performance of bill, was the best acting of the season so far. Then Pedro goes & gives a masterclass performance. Those 2 did such an amazing job with their role's. One of them or both, better win an award.
Pedro's performance in this episode is top notch, especially in that conversation with Tommy. Troy's Joel was slightly better in the argument scene, Pedro's was a bit underwhelming but his overall performance was excellent. And Ellie ? Say no more, Bella Ramsey IS Ellie. Can't wait for the upcoming episodes
People’s reasoning for hating Bella’s Ellie at this point are just laughable. Pedro is smashing Joel’s character out of the park. I have no faith in the academy for handing out awards, but we all know this show deserves at least a few.
That Dances with Wolves scene teared me up a little bit. I remember watching this with my dad who passed when I was 12 and he always used to quote that bit ❤️
i didnt like how joel was stabbed this episode because inorder to follow the same story as the game he had to remove the piece of the bat which makes absolutely no sense because someone of joels knowledge and survival skills shouldve well known to leave what youve been stabbed with as to not bleed out as fast which made him look kinda stupid imo, but in the game where he instead fell on a piece of rebar which obivously cant be moved/carried around actually made sense as to why joel started bleeding out faster. small minor gripe that annoyed me/confused me but wow what an espiode. the show just does not let down.
The couple Graham Green Enormous filmography you should look him up. Both renowned Indigenous comics. I was thrived to see them. Elaine Miles gave her mom a ride to a "Northern Exposure " audition. She was, to her surprise, hired on the spot. Insisted her role include authentic Native representation.
The woman playing Florence is Elaine Myles, Marilyn from Northern Exposure for those of us who remember that show. And Maria is played by Rutina Wesley, Tara from True Blood.
Super late in watching TLoU but two things. 1. Who’s Lee? @21:17 2. The cover of Never Let Me Down Again isn’t just sung by “a woman”-it’s Jessica Mazin (daughter of co-creator, Craig)
These episodes are just getting better and better -- veering between character interaction and fighting. This episode had a lot of humor -- especially the rancher's wife and Ellie's snark. Emmies for Pedro and Bella.
When Ellie gets the Diva cup she’s not “playing” with it. She’s trying out how it is supposed to be inserted, which is how it is shown in the pamphlet it came with. I’m very happy that the show addresses such a taboo topic that video games and most shows usually would never mention. Just because there is an apocalypse it doesn’t mean that they’re isn’t a need for such products and for positive influences that help teens navigate their way through it. Period poverty is a very real thing and period stigma creates a lot of problems in the real world. So awareness and good information are very important.
FYI Ellie is not "playing" with the Divacup as a demonstration of her childishness. The folding and popping out that she does is literally how you use it. She's reading the instructions and following them as she reads - hardly childish playing. As a champion for more environmentally friendly approaches to feminine hygiene in general, I loved this little scene. Her reaction is perfect as well... initially "gross" but quickly followed by "... cool." And when you think about a post apocalyptic world, with limited resources, in true practical terms, dealing with monthly bleeding would be a major issue for nearly half of the remaining humans. Reusable options like the Divacup are absolutely part of that picture, and I really appreciated that the show went there.
I remembered on the first episode , there is the scene where the dog knew something wrong with the old lady that infected by the fungus . So dogs can actually detect the fungus in the human body in this show .
Yes, it was great to see Graham Greene but it was EVEN BETTER to see Elaine Miles playing his wife in this episode. For half a decade she was always an absolute scene-stealer as the very wise, but not particularly talkative, receptionist on 'Northern Exposure.' Her character on Northern Exposure was named Marilyn, very similar to Greene's character's name (Marlon) here.
Having played the game dozens of times in 2016 and 2017 watching this has been an amazing experience, I have teared up every single episode. Incredible
25:50 in TLOU Part 2, the song isn’t actually written for Ellie by Joel, the songs called Future Days by Pearl Jam and it makes sense that Joel would remember it cause he’s a fan of that kind of music in game and Lightning Bolt, the album the song is off of, was released in early 2013 (months before the outbreak happens in the game). They’re going to have to write a new song or pick another song that has the same themes as Future Days for the tv series since the outbreak in the series happened in 2003
Pedro better get all the awards for his acting. Also when Joel asks the old man to point in the map and is answer be the same as his wife, in the game both Joel and Tommy use this interrogation technique.
I came to the comments, about to type this reference as well. This is not just an easter egg, in my opinion, because Marlon ask Florence if she was lying to him. They are aware about this double-check interrogation technique.
This episode was so sweet, I loved it. Joel and Ellie’s relationship is reminding me of the mando and Grogu, idk if it’s because of Pedro or I never realized joel was like the mando in a way.
The podcast episode revealed the song at the end is being sung by the showrunner's (Craig Mazin) daughter. He asked her to do it because she's a musician, and he wanted it to feel like a daughter singing it about her dad.
the dina scene really went over my head, i listened to the podcast right after watching and when i heard them talking ab it i immediately rewinded to see. I gasped
Bella physically closing the distance between her and Pedro in that "I'm not her" scene ... that was a very nice bit of blocking. They are just knocking this show out of the park. By the way, I've enjoyed your breakdowns and seeing what things you pick up on compared to, say, Erik Voss. Often you're both picking up on the same artistic choices, but every so often you see different things (or see the same things differently), and that's how you know how much craft they're putting in the details. Thanks for your perspective!
Peace Lilys are also good air purifiers. NASA are planning on using them in any future trip to Mars to help purify the atmosphere on the ship. I think that there is symbolism in why they are there.
Honestly, when I first saw Joel outside the cabin, and he was having a panic attack, I thought that he was actually having the beginning of a heart attack, because both are similar, in the way that you grasp for air, and you feel your heart being squeezed (not a good feeling, I can tell you. Panic attacks are the worst, and I don't even want to imagine what a heart attack really feels like) P.S. By the way, in the game, Joel doesn't get stabbed, he lands on an iron rod, after falling from a balcony, courtesy of one of the marauders, amd gets impaled- Just wanted to point that out.
Hey Ryan, one thing I saw in this episode. It’s fitting that football is the game they talk about because it mirrors Joel and Ellie’s situation which is highlight in their conversation. Football is a one directional game where violence and aggression are used to move the “goal” closer to the end zone. In the same way Joel and Ellie choose to go only one direction and use aggression and violence to move their “goal” to the end.also the biblical references are great. Really grounds the analysis in reality and truth and how stories were first told.
Fun fact about that cover song at the end of the Episode is that it's sung by the daughter of Craig Mazin (the co-showrunner) he asked her to give this more somber version of the song
5:26 i want to point out that in episode 5 we see a brief moment of Joel being scared frozen for a second when he is sniping down at the crowd of infected. It might’ve been a small panic attack but I’m not a psychologist
Just a quick nod to Elaine Miles in the opening scenes who I recognized quickly from Northern Exposure. Also is it just me or does the room where Ellie find the diary resembles that of Buffy's room from BTVS?
Nice. You just referenced two of my all-time favorite shows. For me, I didn't get any Buffy vibes from that room, if anything, it was more Dawn (with the diary). 😉 Stimpy!
Actually I believe she’s not playing with the diva cup she’s learning how to use it I believe you have to fold it in order to insert it for use. Also a clue to that is she is reading the instructions as she folds it.
Dude, she's not "playing" with the Diva cup. She's looking at the directions and you have to fold it exactly like that to put it in. Yes, she giggles when it snaps back to its open shape, but anyone would do the same. Other than that, awesome commentary.
The couple in the cabin at the beginning were both in Northern Exposure. And using the town of Canmore Alberta as the set for Jackson reminded me of using Roslyn WA as the set for the fictional town of Cicely AK. The casting in particular seems like a nod. In much the same way Adam Arkin (also in Northern Exposure) was cast in the movie Pig. Nick Cage plays a very similar role to "Adam" in Northern Exposure; a chef who has left the culinary world to live alone in the woods. I'm getting big PNW vibes from The Last of Us and won't be surprised if there are more nods to classic northwest tv shows like X-Files and Twin Peaks. Especially because we know we're headed to Seattle in season 2

@@Dipp182 in the beginning when they’re leaving the old couples cabin
Shout out to Doug and all of his supporting cast for making this channel work
He didn’t get a high five this episode!
I especially like the contributions of your mom.
Does Doug have an aide, personal assistant? Whom practice his her que speech with
Fantastic episode. Pascal and Ramsey crushed this. But I can't help but just focus love on the adorable and hilarious Native couple. I want a special just following them.
Like Bill & Frank. Henry and Sam. They clearly deserve an episode unto themselves!!
The actors playing the couple were on Northern Exposure show in the 90’s
I love how Joel states how he wishes to live and that’s exactly how Ellie would later live like In part 2
Two observations about last episode:
- It never came to me that Joel gets wounded right after he starts to get soft with Ellie.
Couldn’t have said it any better.
He is killing it. These larger channels get episodes days before they air. They are not allowed to post the video until after the episode airs though.
They get review copies ahead of time. All review channels do
I feel like they get the episodes early
Random trivia ,the native American wife is the same actress who played Marilyn in the early 90s show called northern exposure .
give this show and the cast their academy awards already.
*Emmy
@@rhabdoviridae ...and Golden Globes
All awards just to be sure
@@At-Least We have to wait on Joel to sing something first. 🤣
i love how Joel makes a joke about how, “everyone used to love contractors” just to sound cool 😂😂😂
A couple of items -
1) The 80's song at the end was also the danger code at the end of the 1st episode so foreshadowing Ellie & trouble with Joel
2) Graham Greene and the actress who plays his wife (forgot her name) in the episode were in Northern Exposure together.
Marlon ,and Florence were both on a show in the 90s called , Northern exposure so nice to see them.
Big fan of them both on that show. They were so entertaining, and funny.
Such a great show
Northern Exposure, shout out! It was great to see Grahame Greene and Elaine Miles reunited. 😄💜💜
She's just as adorable as ever lol.
I love the hunters wife!! She had me on the floor laughing.
Elaine Miles. If you liked that, check her out in Northern Exposure.
She was radiating jovial vibes in the safety of her own cabin home, not give a rabbit damn if Joel had a firearm raised
Pedro did some of his best acting in this episode/season!
I know he made me tear up like 4 times just this episode.
Hey screencrush, at around 21:17 the screen goes black and we see the words “Lee’s part.”
Was that a placeholder for something you wanted to put in the video or a reference to the game? Or to anything in particular? I didn’t get it.
Thanks.
Lol I was so confused
That was Stan Lee's cameo
You missed shouting out the amazing Elaine Miles, who played Marlyn Whirlwind in Northern Exposure!!! Loved that show and loved Elaine's quiet portrayal in this ep and in Northern Exposure.
She was quite funny, as she so often was on Northern Exposure. It was a pleasure to see them both together again.
She was exactly like she was in NE! It was so fun to see her again :)
This show just keeps getting better and better, and these reviews are fabulous! And that Depeche Mode cover hits me in the gut - just love this.
15:39 Ellie isn’t “playing” with the menstrual cup, she’s following along with the instructions. You have to fold it twice, in the exact way she does, before inserting it.
This was by far my favorite episode in the series,I cried so much
Ellie trying to whistle is also a big reference to the game, you missed that detail
Also, the jacket Joel wears in this episode reminds me a lot of the one he wears in Part 2
Joel’s dream of isolated ranch with sheep actually achieved by Ellie during Part II when she and Dina moved there after Seattle events.
What did to think of the episode?
Amazing
I'm all in for this show.
I feel like this was the heaviest and most story forward episode yet!
Genuinely my favorite episode so far love seeing Joel, and Ellie relationship develops.
W
Marlon's wife (Elaine Miles) played the wonderful Marilyn in the hit show Northern Exposure back in the day
23:45, you said that you think Joel relives a memory with Sarah of there last Christmas. But it shows the watch the Sarah gives him on the night of her death. I think instead of it being a flashback, it's Joel thinking of what could have been if the outbreak didn't happen or possibly if Sarah didn't die
I like the sentiment, but the watch was working once, too - when Sarah was smaller
@@Davedarko I didn't think of that fair point
The couple
Graham Green
Enormous filmography you should look him up.
Rutina also was on an episode of The Walking Dead. She played Jocelyn, an old friend of Michonne’s. I’m so glad to see her back in a genre show
The indigenous couple in the beginning were so good. I hope we see more of them.
Super late in watching TLoU but two things.
1. Who’s Lee? @21:17
FYI the character of "Florence" is played by actress Elaine Miles of "Northern Exposure" fame where she played the character " Marilyn Whirlwind".
💜
Lee’s part was my favorite.
I think there was a scene in TLOU2 where Dina told Ellie about seeing her for the first time and she chunk down food super fast
Lee's part? A quick edit mistake? 😉Love you guys!
Came here to find out haha
Yes, it was great to see Graham Greene but it was EVEN BETTER to see Elaine Miles playing his wife in this episode. For half a decade she was always an absolute scene-stealer as the very wise, but not particularly talkative, receptionist on 'Northern Exposure.' Her character on Northern Exposure was named Marilyn, very similar to Greene's character's name (Marlon) here.
i was thinking this exactly
I just recently found this channel, and I have really enjoyed almost everything you have put out in the last month. You have a new fan and keep it up!
He's fabulous! I watch an episode, and the first thing I do is beat feet to his site! And Doug is adorable.
The cinematography in this show is so fuckin beautiful. love it
Graham Greene and Elaine Miles were both in Northern Exposure.
Having played the game dozens of times in 2016 and 2017 watching this has been an amazing experience, I have teared up every single episode. Incredible
And Graham Green's wife is played by Elaine Miles, who was absolutely wonderful as Marilyn in 'Northern Exposure'
The only difference is that in the game it's more gruesome.
@@IzukuMidoriya38855 yeah for a minute I was very afraid for that old couple
I came to the comments, about to type this reference as well. This is not just an easter egg, in my opinion, because Marlon ask Florence if she was lying to him. They are aware about this double-check interrogation technique.
Ep 3 hunds me. I cant take anymore emotional pain. Zombie show they say
@@At-Least you better be ready for the ending then.
Pedro deserves an Emmy!!! Heck, the acting is phenomenal on this show!!!!
The couple used to be on the show Northern Exposure.
This fucking episode...This show is absolute perfection.
the dina scene really went over my head, i listened to the podcast right after watching and when i heard them talking ab it i immediately rewinded to see.
Shout out to ryan, doug ,and lee for their amazing analysis, and video as always 👏🏾👏🏾.
Don't forget Lee!
4:45 Tommy also uses that strategy to find Abby in pt2 in the hotel. Learned it from Joel
Peace Lilys are also good air purifiers. NASA are planning on using them in any future trip to Mars to help purify the atmosphere on the ship. I think that there is symbolism in why they are there.
Ellie and Dina started the farm of ship at the end of last of us 2 and when joel said he want the farm. I saw how they connected the dots🙌🙌
In the game, Ellie actually settles down in a sheep farm with Dina after they leave Seattle. Seeing the nod to that here was pretty nice
Honestly, when I first saw Joel outside the cabin, and he was having a panic attack, I thought that he was actually having the beginning of a heart attack, because both are similar, in the way that you grasp for air, and you feel your heart being squeezed (not a good feeling, I can tell you. Panic attacks are the worst, and I don't even want to imagine what a heart attack really feels like)
P.S. By the way, in the game, Joel doesn't get stabbed, he lands on an iron rod, after falling from a balcony, courtesy of one of the marauders, amd gets impaled- Just wanted to point that out.
And the woman singing that Depeche Mode song is Craig Mazin's daughter
I love Dug every time he says fired
Graham Greene and Elaine Miles are connected in another way. They were both in the TV series Northern Exposure.
💜
Hey Ryan, one thing I saw in this episode. It’s fitting that football is the game they talk about because it mirrors Joel and Ellie’s situation which is highlight in their conversation. Football is a one directional game where violence and aggression are used to move the “goal” closer to the end zone. In the same way Joel and Ellie choose to go only one direction and use aggression and violence to move their “goal” to the end.also the biblical references are great. Really grounds the analysis in reality and truth and how stories were first told.
The lady in the cabin was in Northern Exposure.
Lee’s comment 😂
TY for the great videos
Just a quick nod to Elaine Miles in the opening scenes who I recognized quickly from Northern Exposure. Also is it just me or does the room where Ellie find the diary resembles that of Buffy's room from BTVS?
Nice. You just referenced two of my all-time favorite shows. For me, I didn't get any Buffy vibes from that room, if anything, it was more Dawn (with the diary). 😉
Stimpy!
You pushed this episode out faster than I can watch it
Honestly I don't know half of these shows that you and Doug recap, I honestly just loves to tune in into your channel for some excellent entertainment, and the Your Mom hits, lmao. Doug saying he's being scammed about them shirts is priceless.Great stuff y'all.
