I think mixing is what is really important to make something sound heavy. There has to be enough low frequency sound in the mix and It doesn't really matter what instrument is producing it. It could be produced by a bass or a synth or an 8 string guitar, it doesn't matter, but in order to have wide, thick, heavy sound you need low notes to be present.
Edge of the earth from Sylosis is in E standard and that album has one of the heaviest tones in existence. So heavy in fact that most people thought it was recorded with a seven string when it came out.
E standard was heavy since the 80' - IMO the best way to check if your downtuned riff (let's say it's written for an 8 string) is good is to play it in E standard and see if it holds up
Personally, I think with that sort of riffing, the tuning doesn't matter much. Mors Principium Est has been using standard tuning for years and it's perfectly fine for that style of music. Guess it depends on what you consider to be "heavy".
I played 7's for a while, ultimately went back to 6. In the context of a band with a bassist, or a track with a bass, why encroach on that range? Writing and arranging are key to something being "Heavy." See Opeth: Ghost Reveries. Nothing lower than drop D to my knowledge on that album.
I love this. Tired of the shitty modern metal riffs that have no melody, no breaks and just nonstop technical stuff that makes no sense. Like a kid that has ADHD and won't settle down. This was how it should be done instead.
Nice to see someone else who sees modern metal same as me, there's no melody and the technical riffs with the overly dropped tuning is so bad, as they're just written so messily.
Sounds like you don't like progressive metal. There's still plenty of good non-prog metal being made; for example, listen to Alien Weaponry, which is a modern folk metal band (trust me on this one). Prog, especially very technical prog, is a weird genre. I consider it an "extreme" relative to old school heavy metal just like death and black metal are (of course prog is probably more "listenable" to the average person than death and black metal are, i mean that in a more genre evolutionary sense)
this tuning is definitely still viable, and you did a great job showcasing that! however, personally, i think i would be a little disappointed/bummed if a whole, or most of an, album were written in this tuning. for a song or two, 100% though!
@@davesiddons8921 i've personally just come to *love* the lower tunings. i think it would be a little jarring [to most/all metal fans] if a band had a whole album in E standard (2022 and onwards). it would just take some time to get used to again after not hearing my main genre of music played in anything above drop C (especially now that so many bands have 7-strings, and go even lower) all this time. know what i mean?
@@LT_Dangles_Music different strokes for different folk. I personally cannot stand lower tunings beyond C, it doesn’t sound nice to me at all, but obviously there’s exceptions like say dream theater for example. The writing is... GODLIKE. I mean, respect man, it's a really great song! But it's definetly not heavy at all... the same song in baritone tuning (or even lower) would've be really heavy. Amazing... No, INSANE!!! I need the tabs RIGHT NOW!!!
Wooooow! You've got a new subscriber! Absolutely amazing stuff! Killing it)
Hey Aaron can't wait for the new Intervals album, keep up the good work!
Had absolute stank face during the whole gosh darn thing. Dirty good riffin’
Also - could you share the Gojira preset 😇
Thanks man!
@@JacobMartin Can you share the preset hihi :D :D ?
Always thought E standard was THE heaviest. It isn’t all muddled sounding with those low drop tunings. Might as well be a bass at that point 🤘🏼
Killer song here btw lol.
Insane man 👌🏻🔥🤘🏻 the main riff with the tapping is just so great whatever the different nuances, awesome work mate!
Listening in repeat. This is so awesome.
Insane precision. Very inspiring!
Yup, that's all it takes. Delicious riffs in one video is all I need to subscribe. This was tasty to my ears, thank you.
Sir, 1:49 is illegal in 19 states, and Puerto Rico.
James Hetfield is my best example for E Standard riffing! For me everything below drop c is losing dynamics!
Agree with you but this is why most bands have 2 guitarist
@@yigitcem9893 I’m not sure what that has to do with dynamics
drop c? imo B standard is the limit.
Absolutely sick!!
Absolutely awesome 👌 I love the riff 10 secs in with the chugging and the tapping 👍😃🤘
Or Heir Apparent, my go to example of how heavy and evil even standard tuning can be.
Blackwater Park might be a better example. Every song is in E standard except for the title track (drop D).
pretty sure the whole album is in DADFAE tuning
Great playing bro!!
That was so Amazing!!
this tuning is definitely still viable, and you did a great job showcasing that! however, personally, i think i would be a little disappointed/bummed if a whole, or most of an, album were written in this tuning. for a song or two, 100% though!
I really don’t get that, if it sounds good then what does it matter if it’s in e standard or something daft.
To me it’s not the tuning that makes a song heavy, it’s the attitude and playing that makes the difference
@@davesiddons8921 for sure for sure! i feel ya
@@davesiddons8921 fuck, DT are the one band below drop C i wouldnt wanna hear haha
It sounds like using octave pedal on djent song lmao
Kinda does actually hahaha
Love it! 🙌🏻
I'm back again. This is awesome 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
E standard is as heavy as any other tuning. The riffs is what makes the difference like you point out here!
The writing is... GODLIKE. I mean, respect man, it's a really great song! But it's definetly not heavy at all... the same song in baritone tuning (or even lower) would've be really heavy. That's what i think... but an album with this style entirely in standard tuning... yes, wouldn't be heavy at all but surely it's going to be fucking innovative!
This sounded great!
Thats phuckin dope man, keep it up 🤘
great sound, creative riffs. loving it.
Your chord progression is so awesome!
Hell yeah!! This is a bop right here.
Absolutely incredible
Yes. That was refreshing to see.
Holy moly this sheet crazy good!
👍👍👍
Man those riffs. Tabs would be excellent dude. Very well done
This is sick. You just got yourself a sub
