  • Collecting Virginia Quartz Crystals "Part 1: The Dig"
    *This video is of the dig from our new trip! There will be a second video of the finds and pictures coming soon!!*
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    About the Dig:
    We dug some amazing quartz crystals the other day here in Virginia! These crystals are water clear, and they are very beautiful! These pieces make amazing specimens for display as well as pieces for jewelry.
    These beautiful clear quartz crystals are found locally here in Virginia! The crystals are found in the residual soil with little effort needed to find them! Simply dig, sift, and wahlah! These crystals are found in what used to be Alpine-Type Fissures! The crystals have long since weathered out and broken away from the main host rock (Red/white Sandstone)! Most of the points are single clear crystals ranging from 0.5” to 1" and the largest coming in at 3inches!!!! The clarity of these crystals resemble the well liked Arkansas quartz that have been a collector’s favorite for many years! Even though the size is smaller, the clarity and location make up for it! Many collectors search for quartz coming from specific locations! When it comes to collecting minerals, it is not always about the bulk, size, or quality. Special and unique locations in areas that are very uncommon on the market make these prized pieces! Plus the size make these perfect for wire wrappers and others interested in jewelry!
    We are sure that this place has more hidden secrets than we know! Double terminated crystals can be found at this location! A lot of the quartz crystals contain fractures that have allowed hematite to seep into them creating a very unique yellow, red, orange look inside of the crystals! The plates that are found contain so much hematite that the cleaning process is very difficult, so we usually just enjoy them as they are found! More will come in time!!!
    Let us know in the comments below with what you liked about this video and what you would like to see next time!!

    Like your video and your enthusiasm finding some really cool stones...I live in Virginia and have had some experience with finding crystals in my area around trees. I collect trees for use as Bonsai material and have discovered that it’s not so much as the crystals are trapped by the trees roots, as it appears that the trees actually punch up stones and crystals as the tree grows up and their trunks expands...happy Hunting!

    My brush of choice would be a 2-3" deerfoot/ angle paint brush with soft bristles in a thick abundance I've used this method myself ut works wonderful here in Wisconsin where I find drusy quartz on matrix or a host mineralfor smaller drusys I use makeup brushes with really soft bristles. Hope you find these tips helpful and happy hunting to all fellow rock hounds. Peace from Wisconsin

  • @jefftrag1956

    two ideas, one bring a hand held pressure sprayer to spray on screen. You would not have to do much , just enough to see crystals to conserve water. Do not know if you have a source for water near by but even even each of you hauled up 2 gallons each seem like it would speed up the process and locate more crystals, second haul up a big construction hand held gasoline rock saw to help with the boulders. Not necessary to cut clear through, score the boulders on the sides then force chisels into the cut and cleave off parts of the boulder until you can cut out big clusters. Some trial and error will be necessary but it might work

    Great video, hoping one day I can find something like that. I'm still trying to figure out where I can do some digging in terms of laws prohibiting digging in state parks, federal land. Could you please point me in general in what typrof land can I do some digging. I do live in Maryland, and here everything is either private, or belong to the state or the government. I've been doing research but is still not clear where I can actually dig for crystal just like you!!!.
    Thanks for your video!!!

      As one Marylander to another, you can collect in state forests and private property. Green ridge state forest is a good place to start ,quartz crystals and fossils . But don't dig ,surface collecting only .Private property ,find the land owner, ask if you can hike his property, if he allows you to hike the use the opportunity to scout out likely spots. If the land owner grows crops, he will likely have a rake pile,these are large rocks that would damage the harrow discs or the plow . This pile would be waste rock to the land owner. As for the rest of the state, look for housing developments that are grading the land ,if they are already building they probably won't let you collect. Several years ago some collectors found smokey amethyst. We tore the area apart ,several hundred lbs. of material where recovered. We named it raven quartz because the site was about 1.5 miles from the Ravens training facility. You can get away with collecting in streams, only on gravel bars. If you break rock that you aren't taking with you ,toss the pieces into a deep spot. Quartz breaks to very sharp edges. In the stream those edges wear down very quickly during storms and other high water events. Good luck.Check out the local clubs for more detail.

  • @roward48
    @roward48 8 лет назад +16

    hI, I'm not going to ask you where this location is, obviously, but what I would like to know, as a not too experienced rockhound, is how you can determine an area that was saturated with hot, mineral rich liquid which then slowly cooled and formed crystals over thousands of years. What clues do you look for that a given area is worth investigating? Thanks.

      @charlesbduke7947 4 года назад +1

      You've got a problem in that most of the collecting areas in your area are either state parks or land that is federally owned. DO NOT COLLECT ON FEDERAL LAND. You can collect in national forests, but try to keep it to 1 five gallon bucket per day, you can also check out farms in the area from Front Royal to Stauton. Just ask the land owner if you can hike his fields, rake piles are rocks that would damage a plow so they pull them out of the fields, these make a great place to collect. Check around for gem clubs in your area they will be more than happy to help.
