  • When I installed my Jeld-Wen sliding glass door, the locking mechanism wouldn't engage, and it appears to be a common problem. I’ll show you a quick and easy method to fix a Jeld-Wen patio door that won’t latch or lock. If the sliding glass door latch is sticking, spray some silicone lubricant spray into the latch or lock to lubricate it so it operates smoothly.

    Ours patio door is a double sliding door Jeld-Wen. A side we never opened was not locking and we never knew. Our son was cleaning that side in an inspired moment, and noticed when he was finished the left side would not lock but looked like was locked. It still opened when it showed in the locking position. I found your video and made a slight adjustment to the screws on the striker plate, after viewing how the lock works. The benefit to us was your careful explanation of the lock itself. Can you imagine the door was unlocked for almost 3 years when we thought it was fine. Thanks for your video, makes us feel safer now! 3 years of false secutity!

      My lousy handyman installed this and told me he has this same jeld wen sliding door and you need to latch halfway then close the doors then fully latch. 😅 Just want to chime in that by adjusting ghe latch height and strike i was able to make them latch properly without two separate latch action. Search for jeld wen door latch adjustment. The company puts out the how to videos I just followed those.

    I had exactly the same problem. By engaging lock about half way ( like you said) it worked perfectly. I did try move the strike and whenI moved it about 1/16 inch it worked normally. If I moved it 1/4 inch it would not latch.

    it's a terrible locking mechanism. Mine was brand new...I took it apart and it fell to the bottom of inside the door. have to buy a new one with a key and I am sure it will work poorly too, but this shows me some insight, thanks

    Wow! I have a Super cheap/generic slider from Home Depot. Latch worked great for a year? Till it didn't. Been using a piece of wood to lock it at night. It's definitely a case of the strike being a tad too low. I see hit marks on it.
    When latch starts to come out it's 'higher' than when it's in middle position - sticking out. Just by a tad.
    Good work around till I get to that. Frankly I might try shaving or dremmeling it a tad. Thank you

    This didn't help at all.. bc u know not all sliding doors look like this.. I need help with a sliding door that's a little older.. not old. But it doesn't look brand new like these.. and I'm not saying it's broken bc it's old, its not that old. It's the lock that every time I close it and tried to slide the lock upwards, it won't budge it's like it's jammed, I looked inside the lock and it just won't go in, the thingy that's in the wall that I'm suppose to put the lock in, it won't go in. it's like it's the wrong size or something.. the lock keeps hitting it instead of going in. It's dumb idk how to explain it. But I don't think they built it right. Also the lock like yours on the sliding door.. it doesn't stick out.. it stays in the sliding door. It's supposed to worked while in the sliding door. That's how it was suppose to be built. But that's not the problem, it just won't go inside the hatch, it keeps hitting it instead. When it's open, it will go up all the way, but when it's closed it won't go up at all. It just won't move.

    • @frugaldiy1
      @frugaldiy1  2 года назад

      @@angel-od1cc I don't have any way to receive a video from you. Maybe this will help you. The metal plate on the door frame side (the "thingy that's on the wall") is where the latch and lock engages to. Sometimes, the rollers at the bottom of the sliding door panel become worn out or just need to be adjusted. Worn or out-of-adjustment rollers can cause the throw latch/lock on the slider to "hit" the metal plate rather than engage into it.
      So, I'd try simply adjusting the rollers at the bottom of the slider. To do this, locate the LOWER screws on each side of the slider at the bottom of the door and on the side of the panel frame. Use a Phillips-head screw driver to adjust the slider--turn the screws clockwise to raise the slider panel and turn the screws counterclockwise to lower the panel. The rollers will move up and down as you turn the screws to adjust the panel by raising it and lowering it. It may take a little time, but your goal is to raise or lower the slider panel until the latch/locking mechanism engages into the metal plate.
      I think adjusting the rollers will solve your problem. I hope this helps.

    Looks like poor design since it comes out on an angle higher than when halfway engaged. They should come out straight and raise up.
