Forty years ago, I was there all alone. The lock keeper was a nice man who sold me some vegetables from his own garden at the time. Now it is a highway for all kinds of small boats. Hace 40 años, estaba allí sola. El encargado de la cerradura era un buen hombre que me vendió algunas verduras de su propio jardín en ese momento. Many of the locks in France are totally automated , gates are closed and opened etc as boat approach then you operate the fill or empty with controls from your boat in the lock itself. The one is this video did not look automatic.
Tout le monde actuellement porte un masque alors que le pique épidémique est en chute libre depuis le mois d'avril, c'est ça qui est le plus incroyable.
@Chris Van Bekkum You can actually see that the whole doors on the lower end of one lock are completely open at the same time as water is rushing in from what appears to be leaks on the upper doors. It's two locks in series where the doors between them are open.
Love the guy in red standing with his foot tangled into the rope, these locks are a nightmare in the summer, queues galore and idiots who know nothing about the water, going way too fast along the canal, washing off the bank.
It’s not always a good idea to use the lock gates to let water in. Better to use the sluice, and exit from the lock gates. Still ? They are French, another 400 years they will have caught up.
@@MrMikerush54 I bet there is! LOL . I also used to do underwater inspections on Locks designed like these but are much bigger. Love seeing these old locks.
no boat license as long as you have a rental boat. If the boat belongs to you, you need a boat license. There are exceptions. Or if you don't want to experience what is shown in the video. Avoid the months from May / June to the end of September.
Hartmut is correct. However, you will need an international competency certificate and the CEVNI to cruise on the Rhône south of Lyon, where in any case hire craft are forbidden. That is because the river is fast-flowing and the locks are gigantic with hydro electric power stations on them. The 'biggie' is at Bollene (195m long by 12m wide and a fall of 26m - yep 85 feet).
They could have opened that lock a little further, maybe even created a tsunami that would get them through quicker. Looks like the looneys have took over the looney bin 😂
@@davog1946 - without a life jacket by the time she surfaces she's pinned between the underside of two boats caught in the flow. Good chance of death. Tiddles is spot on.

Spent a week here on a 50 ft. steel barge.... Fantastic fun and always a challenge at the locks...
Nice 👍 video thanks 🙏 for sharing my friend
You can tell we've had practice on locks since those days.
Cruising in the canal was such a great experience.
Can't really call it cruising. It takes so freaking long each step of the way.

That's pretty cool!
Gel coat repair not included in price of admission. Must be purchased separately.
Really good video :)
Gracias por subir este video. Aparecen mis padres Claude y Jeannine. Que casualidad
I did'nt quite get it , were they just trying to flood the first lock to bypass doing two locks ?
Looks like the upper lock leaks badly
I single-handed through there in 2002. Didn't have any of that excitement - I feel cheated (not!).

HELLO! That lock ain't NEVER gonna fill up if the gates are not closed behind the boats!
Despite that very busy water, nobody bothers with a buoyancy aid...

Kind of a loose operation, but I like it.
Am I missing somethin. Why have they left the bottom gates open as there letting water into two locks at once hows this goin to work.

When were those lock gates last maintained? Very poor show indeed losing that much water.
Yes, I agree ! It's a big loss of so much water !
Куда вы поперлись!!?

Being a retired Lock & Dam Operator I find this video disturbing. Could be a log on the sill or a missing J sill if these ole Locks even have J sills.
Being from NL this is enough to find disturbing. You don't want move ships while water is streaming wildly. Recept for damage.
There is a marina on the other side making a fortune on gel coat repair.
