He does need a better venue for his voice. I think he writes his own songs, which I like, but maybe checking some other established writers who can give him something to let him show his gifts might be a good idea. I'm sure whatever label he ended up with has some A+ talent on the books.
Keep the band though. They have a jazzy sort of sound that complements his style.
I dunno if he wants a song to be a hit it's key to be something like this. Singing songs that showcase skill is nice but if people can't sing along no one will care. They will listen once and then move on. But if they can sing along? Then it becomes an anthem that they can keep going back to over and over and over.
