    Existential psychotherapy by Irv Yalom is pretty much the foundational book in this field. If you want to read about its applications in the form of case studies read "Love's Executioner" by him as well.
    Abraham Maslow talks a lot about the hollistic view of people as well. These are just a few authors, there are many more.

      I like Yalom and Existential Psychology is a great book, but it is not the foundational one - significant works by May, Hellenberger, Boss, Binswanger and others all predate it and were in influence on Yalom.
