What i really love about this is the lyrics don't match up with the way the song sounds which leads it being seen in different ways 1: some sinister creature trying to lure you in with the promise of "a world of pure imagination" but its unable to hide its true intentions so the words it says don't match up with the vibe it gives off and at 0:52 something creepy happens with the music its almost like the monster droped its mask for a second almost showing it's true self 2: a person in a horrific situation is in denial and trying to lie to themselves, remembering better times to cope. but it's not the same, reality haunts the happy memories and turns them dark too 3: a person who used to believe in the original song, but has been hurt and lost their optimistic and innocent look on the world is now thinking back on the lyrics with their new view and reciting them with sarcasm feeling angry and lied to (kind of like the song "mad at Disney") Especially since 1:46 the way she says "compare" almost sounds like she's angry but trying to hold it in 2:39 want to change the world? "There's nothing to it..." That level of optimism sounds unfit and sarcastic in this version

There's nothing to it." could mean that not only is changing the world something we all can do without the struggle and suffering we've previously endured if only we move into a realm of Pure Imagination, but -- also -- that in creating that beautiful world, we can't forget to include the Nothing. By "Nothing" I'm thinking of the kind of space that Zen Buddhism, Taoism, & other spiritual practices offer. To all fans out there, I have created a phenomena that must be seen. I am a note-to-color music theorist, but the first half of my career I actually invented optical illusions. // Now as far at the theory, the original “Pure Imagination” song from the 1971 Willy Wonka film was in B-flat minor which i see as purple, and the key of the IMAGINATION! B-flat is the dreamy note. // OK, so I noticed that Fiona Apple sings it hear in F,-minor, and, when I saw the cartoon animation to her song, I realized that she chose F-note because of the pastoral nature of her music video. It was a little cartoon video about the plight of an organic farmer. (F being Green (to me). Like in Beethoven’s “Pastoral Symphony in F.”) End of story is that I took Fiona Apple’s version here and i pitched it back UP to B-flat (purple/imagination). Then I did a Munchkin video which highlighted my optical illusions. Being sung my Munchkin Fiona Apple! I know it sounds crazy, but it’s totally wild. To all fans out there, I have created a phenomena that must be seen. I am a note-to-color music theorist, but the first half of my career I actually invented optical illusions. // Now as far at the theory, the original “Pure Imagination” song from the 1971 Willy Wonka film was in B-flat minor which i see as purple, and the key of the IMAGINATION! B-flat is the dreamy note. // OK, so I noticed that Fiona Apple sings it hear in F,-minor, and, when I saw the cartoon animation to her song, I realized that she chose F-note because of the pastoral nature of her music video. It was a little cartoon video about the plight of an organic farmer. (F being Green (to me). Like in Beethoven’s “Pastoral Symphony in F.”)
End of story is that I took Fiona Apple’s version here and i pitched it back UP to B-flat (purple/imagination). Then I did a Munchkin video which highlighted my optical illusions. Being sung my Munchkin Fiona Apple!

Fiona's take here goes away from the delight of imagination and into the realm of tortured genius imagination. It has shades of the boat ride to it. I would love to hear her thoughts on the creative path for this song. I have seen her pair sunny melody or cheerful lyrics with dissonance before. I wonder what she would say drives her art in this direction at times. Definitely an unexpected combination.
