Interesting choice for an album battle since they are so different from each other. Maybe, that actually makes it quite a clever idea. Presence is a very intense, hard rocking record with no keyboards on it; on the other hand, Out Door is quite experimental - for Led Zeppelin - with keys on every cut! As much as l enjoy the anger and sheer power of Presence, my vote goes for In Through the Out Door. With Presence, “Achilles Last Stand” is an epic tune with dramatic drumming from Bonzo and a galloping thunderous sound. “Nobody’s Fault But Mine” has some fiery fretwork from Pagey and some soulful harmonica playing by Percy. However, those two tunes just cannot topple Out Door for me. My late friend and l, Joel, got into Zeppelin right before 1979. Therefore, In Through the Out Door was the first Zep album we purchased in real time. For that reason, it holds a very special place in my heart. (Cliché alert!) Besides my fandom of all of side one of ITTOD, side two has two sterling songs. “Carouselambra” is a progressive-rock juggernaut. It has three distinct sections with John Paul Jones leading the charge on keyboards. Some of Bonham’s drum fills are spectacular - much like on “Achilles” from their previous platter - and l even like Page’s shimmering sounds on guitar. Next, “All My Love” is a stunningly beautiful tribute to Plant’s five year old son, Karac. LZ strip the song of any of their usual bombast and the heartbreaking story comes plainly through in Plant’s plaintiff vocal delivery. Additionally, JPJ’s synth solo is simply sublime. Two top tier tunes to me. Keep up the fine work, good sir. Cheers from a scorched Big Apple. Rock Out, Prog On and Pogo! I am with you, Peter. ITTOD is the better album for me. I like its variety. Plus In The Evening, Fool In The Rain, Southbound Suarez are killer. Presence is no slouch... it has Achilles Last Stand and Nobody's Fault, but it the rest is of fairly middle of the road quality... at least for Zep.
Presence deeper cuts reachin in the top 4 . Out is good but it's the end the end of the 70s and that was one hell of a f...end.
