    As a kid I played the slide, because it was so easy, I was not able to play the fingerpicking style, after a classic guitar education (no slide at all), I was able to play the picking I wanted, but the combination of slide and picking is so nice to do and to hear.
    But . . . . . here isTHE example HOW to play the slide and pick the strings! This lovely song, easy as it looks is one of the greatest examples I ever heard on slide/picking guitar ever. No tricks, just a recording in a barn!
    AMAZING!
    I lost this example some years ago, but finally i got it back! Its the nicest coolest work on slide I'd ever heard.
    I can tell you, on internet Ive seen dozens of great slide players, but NOT with the finesse and timing en intepretation of a song how a song must been played!
    Mike Dowling, thank you!!

    It's in open G, the guitar is an El Trovador (only 600 originally ever made in the 30's) reissued by National "Resophonic" Guitars. The song is probably about as old as the original guitar. I believe Mike actually owns an original El Trovador and participated in the design of the reissue (or the plate on the front...a bisquit resonator)...
    This is a great arrangement of a Sleepy John Estes song...

    I'd never heard Mike Dowling before, but I just saw him play tonight for 50 or so people at a coffee shop in Delano, MN. All I can say is WOW... this guy is a master!! He can play so many styles so exquisitely... and just a great guy to boot. HE came up to ME during the intermission to say "Hey man- how you doing?", then graciously answered my questions about his guitars, songs, etc.

    Hello. Wonderfull cover. I'll try to play it but what's the tuning (Open D I think).

    • @rhllnm
      @rhllnm 5 лет назад +2

      It's open G. Drives me nuts when videos with alternate tunings don't list the tuning. It's not a freaking piano. Plus this guy teaches and should know how beginners can be frustrated with something like a different tuning. Otherwise great! Nice voice and smooth guitar playing.

    • @SergeCeyral
      @SergeCeyral 2 года назад

      I confirm the open G tuning ! Some clues: the key note is on fret 5 (string 1) and the sus4 chord is (string2 fret1 + string 4 fret 2)

    Wow, the great players make it look easy. Mike plays like he’s falling off a log, but ya don’t want to know how many hours This man has spent behind a guitar. And do ya turn wood also Mike? That’s a fine lathe in the background.

  • @SergeCeyral

    Excellent arrangement, excellent playing and singing. Everything is done with much talent and feeling, but... I'm not convinced by the "El Trovador" sound : like any wooden body, single cone resonator, it sounds a bit dark and muffled, compared to a Style O or Triplate. Just a matter of personal taste
