Actually as a Sri Lankan Catholic i still wear a bindi bcs my whole family does and plus I'm tamil. Some muslims do too it really depends on your family and what ethnic group. Being tamil means that a bindi is like the main part like seriously.

Yep, the dot on forehead thing is a tradition. I'm not sure about the reason behind it, but it's pretty common here in India.
Also, it's not mandatory for women to wear it..they use it if they wish. Sometimes even as a fashion.
