    I purchased a new head joint for my main flute, 14k rose gold lip plate, riser and interior.The warmth,harmonics and protection are wonderful 🎼

    I have a solid silver Z cut Altus headpiece with rose gold riser, lip plate and crown. I love it. It has added warmth to my tone. If one doesn't want to spend the $$$ for a professional flute, the one change of gold riser and lip plate will make a worthwhile difference in tone.

      I totally agree. It doens't break the bank to make these kind of upgrades. Yours sound great!

    I have what I'm pretty sure is a 9k aurumite lip plate on my Powell sonare 601 and I love it. Looks and plays beautifully. I thought this video was definitely interesting, especially how obvious the change in tone was from solid silver to gold. Glad I went with what I did.

      Very nice! I haven't tried any aurumite head joints. I'll have to try one. I'm glad you like the one you chose.

      I have that lip plate on my 705. Indeed, it's wonderful, and very different than my all silver headjoint! (The Sonare is such a lovely flute line!) Being a liturgical flutist, I often play solo meditations, and I actually get comments out of the blue from self-named "non-musical" people about the warmth and "soothing" quality when I play that one.

    Thank you for this! I am currently shopping for a "spare" flute and have been grappling with the 14K question. I do like a richer, warmer sound as opposed to brighter, and this gave me great ideas as to what I might do, given my relatively slim budget.

      @@DoctorFlute Thank you, I will! Yes, I am a FCNY devotee. They have been, as always, so incredibly helpful. I have nerve issues which affect my right hand's coordination, and so narrowing down "the one" has involved a lot of searching and trial. I am expecting my 2nd trial box to arrive on Friday, and hope to finally find my choice among them.

      @@DoctorFlute Hello again! Well, after two full trials and a lot of back and forth with FCNY (not to mention a few more explanatory videos), I have chosen the Haynes Q2 with the split E mechanism (because a little help there is always a good thing) and upgraded the headjoint to the silver lip with 14 K riser. After hours of trying to "crack" it in the low and middle registers, it behaved itself gorgeously. FCNY also sent my final flute with some adjustments to the mechanism to aid my right hand. They are the best. 👍🏻
      My final choice in fact surprised me, as I was all but sold on the Altus 1107 with the Z-cut headjoint, but the wand chose the wizard as soon as I moved to the Haynes. That headjoint was perfect, and the rest of the flute was dreamy.
      My only "wishlist" item now is a grenadilla wood headjoint or flute ... but that should be a while of penny-saving before that happens! Have we any videos on that? 😊

    • @DoctorFlute
      @DoctorFlute  2 года назад +1

      Fantastic! I think the Q series of Haynes are really happening instruments. I am so excited for you. No I haven't done any videos with wooden instruments but maybe I'll do that next. Have fun with your dreamy flute!

    Be very careful of "gold" lip plates if you have metal allergies. Unless it is 24k, it is mixed with a large amount of other metals, typically copper and/or nickel. 14k is over 40% other metals. Rose gold and Aurumite are predominantly copper (In fact, Aurumite has so little gold that it can't legally be marketed as "gold" in the USA, which I assume is why it's listed as "9k Aurumite" in sales literature. Less than 10k isn't "gold". But it still sounds beautiful) . I have metal allergies and trying a few gold and Aurumite lip plates made my chin burn and my tongue itch and swell
    I stuck with a gold riser as it can't touch my body there. I tried the same flute with and without it gold, and I too loved the tone change. But even more, it feels different to play. I could tell which head joint I was being blindly given by the feel of playing it when I was trying to make my choice.

      Yes that does sound like something to consider. So silver doesn't bother you? I bet you chose a great head joint!

    Hi, Dr. M.
    If you can find and demo a Platinum head joint. I 'd love to hear it compared to the gold. Mr. Lipay plays a platinum Burkart flute on one of his RUclips recordings. It is dark and lovely.

    • @DoctorFlute
      @DoctorFlute  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the suggestion. I love platinum as well. Actually my favorite headjoint has a platinum riser only. It gives the sound such a rich dark sound. I'll see if I can demo an entire platinum clad flute. OOlala!

    Thanks for the video. The term isn’t walled but should be wall. A heavy or thin wall headjoint. Gold should also give a flute more body to the sound. I don’t think you’re going to get much difference in a gold lip plate. By examining the way sound is produced at the strike edge gold may not really make much difference. It’s hard to tell much difference in a video. I’ve had a gold embouchure plate applied and the tone wasn’t much different as I was hoping. Yes the riser would make more difference as opposed to the lip plate. A player should weigh the benefits carefully on parts because of huge price.

    • @DoctorFlute

      Have you tried different flutes with a gold lip plate or silver? I think you would hear the difference. I’m not sciencey but I hear the difference with or without the entire lip plate gold. But are you trying to say that only where the air would be split needs to be gold in order to make a difference? I could buy that argument.
