Kiwi chick from Raglan now living up the coast (gissy) Have just found your channel and can't stop watching. Thank you, you are urging me to go back to my roots and back in to the bush. Don't ever stop, loving this.
Please dont stop putting up more videos. Found your channel and have been binge watching. You are a strong young man. Mentally and physically and in character.
Awesome video bro. I love the tiaki of using deadwood even if it makes it quicker to rot out, a solution could be to light a few uncontained fires inside before the moss insulation, feed on oily green matter to give an even tar coating and dry the wood. My highlights of the video were the log pinch level, harakeke string line, kiekie snack and the videography in general, tino ataahua.
same with my brother all over the farm (and native bush) where we grew up. when we ran away, we always ran away up the back of the farm. Mum and Dad never came after us LOL What trouble could we get into in the bush.
nice job, our nz bush is beautiful and has everything to sustain us without tearing it up or wasting stuff. and theres plenty of it. you have so much knowledge , thanks for sharing it.
I've spent a bit of time in the nz Bush over a lot of years, but you my friend are the real deal, been a keen follower from the beginning, keep up the good work, cheers from the naki
This clip is just like the youtuber “primitive technology” no talking at all just building and cooking but he also has subtitles to describe materials and processes 🤙
The most Awesome video yet. The fireplace is such a good idea! One suggestion: next time run the bark lengthwise across the roof instead or up the roof, and overlap them like tiles. The roof will leak less.
Very cool! I resurrected an old railway tarp camp on the lords river, stewart island. Posted it online and DOC went to town on me for building structures on public land, said i had to remove it and all the material. Clearly I can see this is just in your back yard of course.
You could absolutely win the alone program. But I bet they wouldnt use you because you do not sit around and mope and whinge and wine about your situation or get all retrospective staring into the fire. You get on with life without complaining and if there is a problem you sort it out. Congratulations on a fine build. My brother and I built one years ago for use 2 weeks later in the roar but thats a palace compared to ours. Well done.
Are you saying you have never watched John Plant on Primitive Technology channel? This is a cool hut and a great video but John Plant is next level, he uses a stone axe and makes bricks and clay tiles from scratch.
@@callmehank88 seriously comparing? it like comparing oranges and apples. Both have different set of skills. Love them both though. But this channel is way too underrated. I love it to bits.
Can I recommend, for your next attempt, the use for Raupō for roofing? That was a very popular plant for roofing by the original Māori. Common, easy, to harvest, minimal impact on the plant (pruning is great if you do it properly, helps the plant rather than hurting it), and lasts longer than bark does compared to the effort required to find and harvest it.
Super cool. Great video, this reminds me of what New Zealand is all about instead of it being so woke and deceived like it seems to be nowadays. Respect to you my friend.
Gotta love that pumice country, reminds me of our poaching day's on Tarawera ridge and the waiwhakapa slips, there were so many deer it was hard to shoot a Hind over 90lb
Bro that’s epic. Bet DOC will have something to say about it🤣🤣 Can I ask how long it took?? I’m looking at doing a survival video and building a shelter as well but not on you’re epic scale.
I think you'd make a great contestant in Alone. This shelter is better than half the ones I've seen built on that show. And I've seen what you can do hunting.
What a mean hut. IF, only if this hut was in my home land te urewera I would definitely stay in it. Lot of effort there mate 👌 💪 thanks for the content.
At 22:10 I was thinking, Man, that's one strong piece o' wood in that handle he's put in alf. LOL. But it did take an incredible beating before finally succumbing to the stress of it all. Great video, really enjoyable. But I agree with other commenters: that was an awful lot of hard work. Admire your skills and attitude. Thanks again from Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada.
watching this video reminds me of the things we did in the creek and woods everyday as a kid. It must be a sad childhood living in suburbs and electronics. We had 1 TV, no cable, no internet. You couldn't keep us in the house unless it was bad weather.
I've followed you for a few years and am only now seeing what you are all about. I love your values and this video sums it up - if I could afford it you'd be my first patreon sub 💪
Pretty cool, I liked the punga flat where you got the half buried log for another site. Trenching right round and building the floor up gives good drainage. Heavy black plastic roof and 2 walls all one piece, branches laid on top to stop the possums making claw holes. Mostly punga for the walls, I've made a couple like that.
And not a building inspector within a bulls roar of you mate. Just needs the carpet and wallpaper, and she's all sorted. Awesome job mate. Thanks for the upload. Until next time, atb to you and your family.
Surprised you didn't find any Huhu grubs for a quick snack. Better than a black plastic bivi that have become an abandoned mess in so many catchments. Great content as always Shay, hope you take the family in to see the fruits of your hard work I bet the little one would love it.❤🏕️👍
A Massive amount of work goes into making a hut like this. Well done mate.
I was wondering if you'd watch this mate, I was going to share it to you
Thanks mate, was a really enjoyable challenge 😊
He’s left big boots to fill now Clay. He he

Raglan my happy place ❤
The whole thing's great but that in-field axe handle replacement was top-tier mate.

This is just awesome... Well done. Great video and great shelter!
That’s so awesome mate! You are one resourceful and talented guy! Well done! 👍👍👍

Wow. That's a work of art. It looks like it's been there a hundred years.
Architecture 101! Much respect to you Shay! This is incredible... Thank you for sharing.
Such an amazing build ! This was all I used to do as a kid, me and the bro had built a city in the bush like this. Makes me want to do it again 👍
Why don't you check if any of it's still there?
Even if it's just bits and pieces, still makes ya laugh from the flood of memories

plenty of it for a small amount of the population to visit. The rest we cut down and sold back to our own people. now we use dead wood to build huts.
I've spent a bit of time in the nz Bush over a lot of years, but you my friend are the real deal, been a keen follower from the beginning, keep up the good work, cheers from the naki

You can be proud of that shelter, making that with just a small hatchet. Your definitely keeping it wild !
This is one of my favourite videos, great work!
Awesome job bro love the fact you didn’t cut down any living trees like so many other bush craft hut builder on here do
Yeah
It's illegal in New Zealand.
@@justythrasher ideally, this should be the truth everywhere ! It is in nz national parks
@@tonysouthern3017 amen, no need really aye.

Fantastic skill you have Shay, you could teach the young and old heaps of bush skills and knowledge, well done.
Good work bro💥💥🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
This takes me back to my childhood thank you brother much love from Auckland
This has vibes similar to the primitive build guy in Aussie’s channel. Let your actions speak rather than words. I like it !
Wow awesome build must have taken ages especially with the great filming and camera angles . Best hut build video I have ever seen

You deserve much more subscribers 😮. You are bloody amazing.
Cheers from the waikato, makes me want to move to the country again

I've been thinking harekeke would be good too, or any hardy grass, it curls up when dried and could be used as thatching?
I use a rock to the lumber in those places where they have a lot to do with felling a tree 😊
Great upload thanks
That was epic, you must have had a few blisters 🤦♂️. Fantastic that you didn’t use any live trees too 👍
