One of the things that impresses me about this ride is that you don't seem to stop to read a map or have a look at a sat nav you seem to just know all the correct turns to make. :)
Thanks for the ride, Ken. I've taken my Volvo 240 up to West Point and thinking of watching the leaves changing in Autumn once again up 9W /Palisades Interstate..via car...next month..Glad you had a great trek 2 yrs ago.. Keep up your labor of love...JW/Pizza Rules.
Epic ride. I moved upstate about an hour north of the Tappan Zee Bridge (TZB4Ever) and have beautiful riding up here amongst the farms. I used to live in Fort Lee so crossing the George Washington Bridge was nice to see. I crossed it with both my road bike and my mountain bike (that I rode at Highbridge Park Trails in NYC). I drive thru Bear Mountain every day on my commute down now.
I grew up riding bmx all over Manhattan from morning to night. This was a ride I've always wanted to do. I finally own a mtb, let's see if I do it. Good job.
I'm thinking of doing this ride tomorrow so I googled cycling route 9W south of bear mountain and what do you know, it's an action kid video. Yeah I'm worried that 9W in the bear mountain region is pretty sketchy.
actionkid105 this is by far one of your longest rides yet! Congrats bro! Im also pretty sure this is your first time doing Bear Mt. How was the ascend to bear mt?
Thomas Wu I rode it with him on the way out (I’ve got a 7 minute video on my channel) and it was also my first time going out to Bear. The climb was pretty gradual but long so it was bearable. I found some of the 8-11% gradient hills on 9W tougher than the 5-8% gradient of Bear Mtn. I am running an 11-25 cassette though so my gearing wasn’t optimal! Actionkid had an 11-32. :)
Thanks, it’s one of my longest rides by far. The ascent to Bear Mountain wasn’t that bad. The journey on the way back was much more challenging because of the steep inclines on 9W and nasty headwinds.
I plan on doing this in summer 2020. What was your total feet climbed including bridge? I thoughr 9W would have better cycling infrastructure. You would find a big difference with clipless pedals.
Hey ActionKid, thanks for this video guide, I was thinking about riding Route 9W for the first time this year. What bike did you ride the whole thing on? (I'm sure it wasn't your singlespeed?) I only have a fixed gear commuter bike so I was thinking I might need to get a new ride before I try this.

One of your most underrated videos to date! Also difficult to find. Glad I found it and inspired to ride a bike through here!
I bet you had nightmares the night before of completing that journey only to find out the camera didn't actually turn on.

I'm going to use this video during my Nordic Trek(poor man's Peloton) workouts.
I'll give it up to you for the ride, the mountain portion of that ride looked sketchy as hell, glad you made it safely.

Red English Phone Box on right hand side at 39:41, we don't have those in England anymore
Wow, good catch! That’s a rare sight to see.
What an excellent video. When that bus backed up towards you, YIKES! You were so calm - NYC-trained, eh? Thanks for a great ride.

Did you do it?

actionkid105 did you cycle with the whole rear basket combination that you usually do?
Thomas Wu No I used a rack back for the ride. It’s more stable
5 hours, the first time watching such a long video
I’ll be impressed if you watch the entire 5 hours! I don’t expect anyone to, haha

I’m not sure how many feet I climbed. It was definitely a lot!

…you was alone on the road !
How anyone can take enjoyment out of riding a bike on rte.. 9w is something I could never understand
I enjoy it because it is a change of pace from NYC streets, offers rolling hills, different lifestyles and gorgeous scenery.
too much asphalt, not enough ride......
