I waited until after seeing the movie to listen to reviews. I pretty much agree with this review. Its a good ,movie that could have been great. Clooney admitted it was not a big budget film. Nonetheless, the folks in Seattle "missed the boat" by not pulling out the stops to have it made where the story occurred, down to filming at the original 1918 shell house. The River Thames is no substitute for Lake Washington. The shoreline scenes are so not Pacific Northwest and Mt Rainier and the Cascades are missing. The acting was fine (Hadley Robinson stood out) and the oaring is real. Its worth seeing.

I wonder why they didn't film in the real location, or at least in the general area. Too expensive maybe?

Clooney said because the area doesn't look like 1930's Seattle. Neither does the 2022 River Thames! There are ways to adjust the shots and focus, shoot in front of parks. And digital technology which was used to create the "Hooterville" where Joe lived for a short while until he made the team and moved onto campus. I think it came down to money. The studio gave him a limited budget (I've seen the figure $40 million). An amount the film has already grossed at the domestic Box office. Shame to make a great story into a good movie. @@lifeisbella

I am a native Northwesterner who attended the University of Washington, and has lived in Seattle for forty years. I greatly enjoyed the film, but was disappointed that they couldn’t use a bit of their CGI budget to insert a view of the Cascade Mountains in the background of some of the scenes on Lake Washington. They took the trouble to insert a shot of the Smith Tower from Hooverville.

I’m actually a university rower who read the book. I liked the movie, I thought it was good to see rowing on the big screen. But you are right about the Oscar bait. Personally I would have preferred to see Boys in the boat be made into an HBO miniseries or something. That would have fit the book better.
