I'm so sorry you've had to deal with that aggravation. Unfortunately, and sadly, this seems to be a common issue with Narwhal/Nahvalur. A few years ago, I experienced the same thing with their Original & Schuylkill models that I purchased in close succession. Since then, they've come out with higher-end [more expensive] pens made with beautiful materials; yet, I was so turned off by the initial experience I never considered getting another Narwhal/Nahvalur pen again; especially when there are so many gorgeous pens out there made by other brands or independent makers that don't experience this level of quality issues. It's great that you were able to fix them. The point is YOU shouldn't have had to.

This exact issue just happened with my tromso too 😢😢😢 it came to me basically disassembled and I had no wrench. I bought it through Galen so returning directly to them wasn’t an option.
My husband and I tried to fix it but I ended up having to send it back to Nahvalur to fix. Seems like an easy enough fix if you have the right tools. Sadly sounds like this is a widespread issues with these models 😮

It’s unfortunate that this issue occurs so often. I hope it makes them rethink adding the wrenches to the pen package. Would save them lots in future costs for shipping and repairs.

I had the same issue with my Nautilus...they sent a wrench..and since the mechanism was the same as TWSBI's I could fix it. They should really do the TWSBI thing and include a wrench and silicone grease with their pens.

I have 1 nautilus and when I got it I emailed Narwhal asking to buy a wrench for cleaning and they told me that the nautilus wasn’t disassembleable like their other models. Looks like that isn’t true since you’re able to use a wrench with yours. That’s irritating.

  • @ReverieOfThorns

My TWSBI Eco did this to me when I first got it, I knew you could disassemble it like that bc it came with the wrench and silicone grease but I panicked snd thought I broke mine. Luckily I know how to re-assemble the pen when it does that, so I think I'll go ahead and probably buy one in the future since I've been thinking of buying one sometime. Still sucks that that is even an issue though, I agree that they should include the wrench and instructions simply for cleaning and greasing purposes, like the TWSBI Eco has.

I had the exact same experience! I had one of the Horizon models and when I was cleaning out the ink, the piston just came out. For no reason at all.
I had to take the pen back to the store I bought it from, where the guy tried to play it down by hinting that I’d probably used too much force. (As if in 30 years of using pens, I wouldn’t know how to ink them! 🙄)
Still he fixed it for me, but I ended up selling that pen and the other Nahvalur pen I had. I was just wary of using these pens and I don’t think I will go back for another Nahvalur unless the quality issues are addressed. 😔

I'm surprised to hear people are having this problem. I've got several Nahvalur pens and never had this issue. I wouldn't call these "broken" though. They weren't tightly assembled. That is a problem and it shouldn't happen but there are broken parts that needed to be replaced. So many of their pens include the wrench. Why they're not included in the more expensive one is odd. The wrench is used to thoroughly clean and grease these piston fillers when needed.

    • @KarynaLovesToPlan

I have done a little research now after contacting Nahvalur customer service, and not having as reply as yet, regarding the availability of the metal piston wrench. Goldspot Pens has a video up that demonstrates how to clean the Nahvalur piston pens , and he mentions that the metal piston wrench is included with the Original Demonstrator and Schuylkill lines. I find that very odd, that the "cheaper" Nahvalur pens have the wrench included, but the more expensive pens don't. So if Nahvalur does not get back to me with a vendor where I can purchase the wrench separately at a decent price, or provides me with one, the other option would be to purchase one of the pen models that have the wrench included, even though I would not normally go for those models. I don't find that very customer friendly to be honest. I will think twice about purchasing another Nahvalur pen in future, as this issue does not boost my trust in the brand and my customer experience, if those that bought the higher prices models are struggling to get hold of the wrench to fix or clean their pens properly.

This looks like the same process you use with TWSBI pens when you disassemble them for a thorough cleaning and/or piston greasing and then have to reassemble the pen. It can take a bit of fiddling to get it reassembled exactly right, i.e. so there's no extra space at the piston knob. I do wonder if the metal wrench that comes with the TWSBI 580 is sized properly; I'm guessing ot might be. The plastic wrench that comes with the TWSBI ECO might have too much protuding plastic (hard to articulate this).

its kind of a conundrum about piston fillers because they work under differential screwing strength, you either tighten it so much it never budges you'd have little to no access for greasing in the future, or just tight until its slightly above finger tight but when the piston gets sticky, the piston operating knob defeats the tightness. when you add in something like the wrench, people think of TWSBI's DIY value/nature that it decreases the prestige/luxury aspect.

This very poor on Nahvalur's part. Just horrible. These pens shouldn't have the piston unscrewing like that. You don't see Pelikan's piston unit coming out, and you and also just take the TWSBI wrench to a Pelikan and open it. Shame on them.

Agree - and for it to happen on two pens within a week.
