The same excuses for why a unified democracy "wasn't practical" were offered then. I still remember the predictions of revenge killings and rivers of blood that were sure to follow if indigenous South Africans were granted equality and it just did not happen. A two-state solution just means an impoverished Palestine, picking up the pieces of decades of military occupation, while Israel continues to thrive off of stolen Palestinian wealth, with full support of Western powers. Israel will continue to sabotage every attempt by Palestinians to build their state, and will inevitably re-occupy Palestine as soon as they think they can get away with it again.
